the band's energy last night was incredible. It actually was what got me through the whole night.... on 3 hours of sleep, a time change, and a 6 hour flight, I was really running on fumes but I was able to dance strong all night. To me it is another testament to the level of playing here....

Looking forward to the day off in SF!

Last night did anyone notice that the band announced they played 5-6-90 Frost Amphitheater...........Huh. I was kind of thinking it was one of the Dominguez hills show from May 1990.

I love the original Dominguez run of shows. Would be fun to see and hear DSO do the whole run.

It was only a 2-pack but it was a good one---especially this second show. They had never played at this place (an outside field) and were not prepared with the water and things they needed for the heat that we got for that first show.

That's the first set that opened with LTGTR>Race Is On>H>S>F... and Brent, who is a little messed up (I remember stepping over a towl on the ground that show to get back to our spot and realizing that there was someone's head under that towl a little too late---ASS05AHCA79HZNXCAVGAVOPCAVR6ZGICAGJ.jpg...it seemed like everyone was messed up cause of how hot it was before the sun went down)... getting back to the point, Brent at some point mid set gets up from his bench and walks over to Garcia but takes a huge stumble in the middle of the stage, in front of 30 k people, and as he gets to Jerry, he says something to him...and it's just kind of awkward, because it's clear he's had too much of something and everyone is just kind of looking away and the second Brent finishes whatever he's trying to say, he makes his way back to the keyboards with no stumble this time. Garcia kind of looks down and without missing a beat, catching the band a little off guard, emphatically launches into Loser, with such perfect timing cause Brent hadn't even gotten back to his seat yet. I just remember me and my friends shaking our heads at the statement.

Since when is Easy to Love You a late 80's 90's song???? Chill out and enjoy the music being performed...maybe if you listen abit ...you'll realize the music certainly was "real" as you put it wayyy beyond 1978.

People love to bitch about Victim; I've seen this sort of thing on the forums a number of times. To be honest, when I was seeing GD shows, I wasn't all that pumped to hear it either. However, if you listen to some good versions of this tune (e.g., Without a Net), it's really cool. The chord changes are interesting (as are the lyrics), and it's unique in the same way that St. of Circumstance is unique (probably because some of the chords in both songs were lifted from classical music). Plus, when Garcia is into it, he nails his solos throughout the tune, especially with the addition of the MIDI from '89 on. I think it would be cool to hear it late in the first set, as it was played in this show, rather than as the second set opener, as was so common in the '90s. I've heard DSO play Victim, and not surprisingly, they played it very well, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Like everyone else, there are certain songs I'd rather hear than others; but when shit is played well (as is usually the case with DSO), even the tunes you're not necessarily looking to hear have some punch to them.

Give this song another chance. You may be pleasantly surprised.

We Can Run is an AMAZING song... how can you not like it? Blow Away is another great song. Now I'm not much of a lover if Victim, either, but the first two, are in my opinion, wonderful tunes...

just my .02

wow im not sure why you guys stick up for those songs....

but its all good, i love to hear you "older" heads bicker

and my opinion stands strong,

id much rather hear young jerry belt out a morning dew,

or a jam packed setlist with like 30 or so songs, or some classic dead ....

when the dead was playing to respectful fans,

of course i never got to meet any of those fans, but my moms boyfriend would go to every alpine valley show in the early and late 80's

and he said that the fans and the music changed with time, maybe it was just alpine valley that was changing B)

my first show was alpine valley 2002 when i was like 11 years old, and ive been converted since that day!

LONG LIVE THE DEAD!

youre right about that, i never liked lost sailor>saint very much, then i heard DSO play it and i can listen to it any time...

but for victim, i think the only part that keeps my attention is jerrys guitar part during the verses

While I'm not a huge fan of "Victim" or some of the Brent tunes (I'm a Brent fan in general, though), I think DSO could sing the phone book and I'd be dancing. I was thinking about the general reaction to these tunes by Dead fans, though, and I believe the negative reaction to these songs is couched firmly in the fact that the band was not as consistently good during the years these songs (and other new ones) were played. That's not to say they were bad, but to say that they weren't as good as often as they were in the past and they seldom had the energy they exhibited in their earlier years.

Fortunately for us, we have the benefit of seeing the Dead in their physical and musical prime with the entire musical library at their disposal thanks to DSO. Seeing DSO play these tunes that are much maligned by the general Deadhead population really, truly puts them in a new lihgt.

The "Blow Away" was outstanding thanks to Rob B. His keyboard work on that song was just exemplary and it made an otherwise boring song (IMO, mind you) quite exceptional. It's funny, I've seen DSO play "Victim" a couple of times and Sat, when they started into it my friend sort of looked at me and groaned, I laughed and said "just wait, I know you don't dig this song, but seriously, give it a listen and give it a chance, you might be surprised." He was. Pleasantly. Now, he wasn't completely swayed since he finds the song sort of dark and depressing (though that's one of the reasons I like it, Bobby isn't really pulling any lyrical punches here), but the music behind it was just funky as all get out and really quite danceable.

All in all, this was a great show with a ton of energy. It's interesting because, while I enjoyed the overall show a ton on Friday, especially the set list, the Sat night show had more energy (at least consistently from start to finish) than Friday's. Don't get me wrong, though, both shows were absolutely phenomenal and I don't believe I stopped dancing the entire night.

You are a little behind the times too my friend...the new songs for the GD (a band that's been defunct for more than 14 years) and the questionable ones that we are all allowed to bemoan are not those above.

If you want to complain about the new/debatable stuff for the GD, you are talking about songs like:

Corrina

Easy Answers

Picasso Moon

I Fought the Law

Wave to the Wind

If the Shoe Fits

and so on...

Just thought you would like to know the songs we are all permitted to be bitching about---although since THIS band does not really do those songs...

My vote is for a quck time out, a few "if then" statements or some removal of privileges, but I'm willing to do whatever the masses decide.

Why?

im sharing my opinion about the group and the music,

no one asked what you thought of me ...

i understand people here are opinionated. but why joke about violence?

are you threatened by my ideas?

im sharing my opinion , and i think im being pretty respectful to you guys...

but i dont feel very welcomed by you "older heads"

i have nothing but respect for the deadheads who came before me

...but some of you guys are as ignorant as kids my age...

is it because im 19? or what ?

what causes you to act so ignorant?

maybe if you actually met me, like jordanfolks anddave or connie and gary, you guys would realize what im about,

and thats playing music,

and if you would threaten me to my face,

you would end up gettting your ass kicked..sorry
