tbones
does anyone know what was played second set? I left early because the music was boring. I think phil is just a bit past his prime... Phils old! Im sure his prime was likely 30 years ago if not 40 years. However he can pull if off still. As I was bored with the show too I wondered whether it was the music or me. I find the festy thing to be much more about the festivities than the music. This was my first GOTV and my first large east coast since Giants 94. It will most likely be my last. After the gigantic takeoff at the HOBs with DSO, the thursday DSO at the vibes was not the same. I felt bored with all the music. I can't connect with the music with all those people on a bumpy /muddy field. I see Phil at all of the Warfield/ bay area shows and am usually super happy with the music, I was feeling strange with the vibes. I felt old. I think I understand why so many east coast heads have poor impression of Phil and Friends. The focus for him out here is mass crowds with a prefab sound. I really tryed to read between the lines and feel the magic but it never came. I left feeling more guilty than bummed with Phil. Everyone I was with liked the show. Posititivity is always the best and I know ive been known to preach it but if I dont feel it I cant know it.....

BuffaloMike
Sad to say, but........ Please don't rip on a good man like Phil..... Do you not know he has been chosen as the gatekeeper of the magic after Jerry died? (was it not Phil who said the Grateful Dead would never die?......He may have been unsure why he said it back then......but I have no doubt it is clear as day to him now why he said that) All we need is Phil to play with DSO for the unbroken chain to complete itself......(he's not gonna give it to Bobby after the selling the catalog episode and the way bobby went after Doug Irwin....fate wont let him) then the magic will be enjoyed by another generation once Phil plays with DSO..... When Phil plays with DSO, the torch will be passed......and I will be there to witness it...... this is what we should be hoping for.......we are almost there
vbf3
I saw Phil and Friends a couple of weeks ago and was not that thrilled. It certainly could have been simply due to I had had just seen DSO two nites prior. I completely accept that Phil and perhaps the other members of the Grateful Dead are trying to forge a new identity for themselves apart from the Grateful Dead experience, and I give them lots of credit. In Phils case the band was a little to much of Journey (no disrespect to them) meets the Grateful Dead. In the absence of DSO perhaps I would have appreciated it more......... Forum MVP Vortex Posted August 5, 2008 Forum MVP Report Share Posted August 5, 2008 I liked Steve Molitz when he was in Particle , Charlie Hunter really knows how to use a wah pedal and is one of the most enegetic guitarist around. Bring back Particle ! I could be wrong (as I am unaware of Charlie Hunter having played with Particle although he may have) but I believe you speak of Charlie Hitchcock, the original guitar play for Particle. Charlie was kind enough to play on my Shimmy Shack recording project. More info here ... http://www.myspace.com/shimmyshackmusic

Advisory Board Herdygerdy Posted August 6, 2008 Advisory Board Report Share Posted August 6, 2008 I love Phil, and I'm glad he's out there doing his thing and enjoying himself as well as making some people happy... I for one, don't like Phil and Friends... I go to shows for the music, and his music just doesn't do it for me... To each their own
Mohammad
i really do not dig phil leshs new guitarist i think hes a way overrated musician and the keyboard player too.. where is he getting these guys... theres a whole new generation of talented musicians out there, im sure one of them could actually make a dead song sound like a dead song but phils new guy guitarist doesnt really do it for me.. vocals or guitar.. Jackie ripped it up as the show went on. He was definitely showing professional courtesy to Larry Campbell, which is admirable for a young upstart to do. Both Larry and Jackie had superb moments, all you need to do is listen to Cumberland Blues to figure that one out. This was a fantastic show, and with the DSO sets were teh highlight of the Vibes this year IMHO.

Maybe one of the plethora of new books that came out after Garcia's death tells us that Phil also said this later on, I don't know--I still haven't read any of them. Phil is doing his own thing and I get why not everyone enjoys it, but I, for one, still love what this guy can do. He's having fun and mixing up the tunes. Still a little rough at times, but they've only been together for a few years. That being said, I am not seeing any Phil shows at all this fall!!!! $$$$ and time. Rather see DSO myself! Rather see DSO myself! i'm with winters.. that show was big sound.. lots of fun.. yea, i could like another lead, but he didn't ask my opinion AND it sounds great.. the big sound was awesome.. we had him play here in glen allen too a few months back.. his tix were only 15 vs dso commanding 20.. kudos dso.. off topic... but when phil played glen allen, he had a small sound setup... BUT since he played mostly aoxomoxoa and anthem of the sun material, it was, well, classic.. so, it worked out too.. mountains of the moon with the moon rise.. wow.. not sure that's either of those two albums, but it was sweet.. I dunno I love it all.. tom

Phil said it in 1972......... after Mickey's dad ripped them off (He's Gone)....and their finances were in shambles.... It was regurgitated in the Rolling Stone shortly after Jerry Died if you need a reference......The grey shade one with Jerry's face....and it IS ACCURATE,,,,
