Straight out of the gate the pendulum was swinging perfectly, with Skip dropping absolute bombs to lead the way.  Very nicely picked setlist and absolutely amazingly played. You could refer to it as a masterclass in Grateful Dead if you ask me.  I won’t go through the whole set but just want to touch on a few things quick. The Box of Rain, the unexpected and rarely heard Two Souls in Communion dedicated to Pigpen, and Bird Song hit me a little harder and I hadda catch a few tears during them, as I spent the night with a friend of mine, who recently lost his father, and I too lost mine when I was 16, the only person we were missing was my best friend and cousin who also became part of the club a few years ago and we woulda had the trifecta. I woulda liked to have been with both of them for this, as my cousin has been a fixture by my side at every DSO show for 20 years, but we will get em next time!  That’s the thing about Dead, it’s cathartic and takes you to places where you can be vulnerable and go back in the annals of your mind and break you down to your core, but also put everything into perspective and put your mind at ease. So I hope in some way it did the same for my friend. 
 

Second set I was looking for Feel like a stranger, The Other One, as I know I heard a couple notes of it both nights, and Morning Dew. 2 outta 3 ain’t bad!  And that Dew was super hot soaring into the neighboring galaxy!!! Safe to say all in attendance had an amazing weekend including the band, as there were nothing but smiles abound!  Praise DSO, the keepers of the flame!  Until next time!

Round 2

 

Right from the jump you knew this was going to be a special night. Opening with Help>Slip>Franklin. The band needed to work some things out during Slipknot. They found what they were looking for and were locked in the rest of the night.  The crowd was a little more rowdy, and the place was more packed than the night before.  This made for more energy and the band matched the intensity.  Seems like DSO can take it to another notch when they do a venue 2 or more days in a row.  Maybe it's familiarity, having dialed things in the first night, but the band seems to start growing roots to the stage (like a mini residency).  Rob's vocals on BTW were spot on and very powerful.  I didn't have Keep on Growing or Gomorrah on my DSO bingo card.  Hell in a Bucket and IKO had the joint jumping.  Box of Rain was a nice send off to the setbreak.  The second sent was a long long crazy crazy set.  Capped off by a Morning Dew for the ages.  During Dew at one point you couldn't hear yourself think the crowd was so loud, then the next minute you could here a pin drop.  The band had the crowd hypnotized like snake charmers dictating our next moves.  The pigpen dedicated Two Souls in Communion was smooth.  One more Saturday night had everyone levitating.  Was an awesome weekend, kudos to the band for bringing it once again!  Slept in the van after the show.  For future reference 26 degrees is the cutoff for being too cold without a heater or something.  Praise DSO!

ive been iso morning dew for a long long time.

there is no other song in the entire grateful dead catalogue which introduces itself with a more powerful 1 note signature explosion than morning dew.

 

dark star? 4 notes and kinda mellow. help on the way?  4 chords. st stephen? 2 regular notes.

but morning dew-- just 1 hair-raising reverberating hello crescendo.

 

this is THE song.

 

saw the grateful dead melt me with this.

 

and saturday night in wilkes barre pa, the dark star orchestra layed down the law.

this was the finest morning dew, ive evah seen them do.

each musician was so in tune.

this song at its best is PRIAML>

and this was a knee buckling, hair-raising, eyes watering, head melting, goose bumps walk me out.

 

everyone was one.

skip was beating the sh*t outta his strings. robB was pounding and i mean pounding the keys.

robE was cranking up the volume. and dino and rob were builing building building the smashing backbone.

and jeff?

well jeff was simply in another zone. if he was ever truly jerry, it was at this moment.

pin drop soft, heart wrenching, nuclear--- it was everything.

 

this was so powerful, the band didnt even segue into another song when jeff belted out the last--

i guess it doesnt matter ANYWAYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

the band hit the last note and morning dew ended. 

the climax of two nights in wilkes barre pa which began with jack straw early friday evening and came to a rousing conclusion past midnight saturday night/early sunday morning. 

 

and then the band completely stopped. took a break. looked at each other,

motioned to one another. rob walked around a little. 

and then with a few beats dso finished the night off with a rockin one mo saturday night, almost as a 2nd set encore (before returning for a true encore and an extra saturday night surprise ---lisa channeling mccartney on a rousing oh darling).

 

really truly amazing.

40 hours in Wilkes Barre was a whirlwind of excitement.

Been so long…8 months of no DSO…that Dino sprouted a beard.

Venue was an unobstructed view theatre with ga seats and balcony. Sound was great. Even with lax security there was plenty of dance space on first night with a more rowdy crowded in the aisles 2nd nite. From my 3 rd row aisle seat on left had no problem moving and grooving the whole time both shows.

First night right in my wheelhouse with a 78 recreation. The set up had most of the band on left side of wide stage with Skip and Barraco on the right side back 40. I don’t think they even had mikes.

From first notes of Jack Straw till end of show I was in bliss. Comes a Time was the highlight for me. Drums was indeed a jovial team effort with most of band and others.

2nd nite had same set up with different instruments and mikes for all for elective.

HSF, The Stranger and Gomorrah were highlights. Also during Iko Dino sported sunglasses scrolling SANDY (a well known DSO admirer) across the lenses. Seeing her and Vinny acknowledge the gesture was heartwarming.

Of course Dew was second set highlight and how can I not enjoy yet another Saturday Night…uh huh.

I returned home thinking I know it’s only DSO but I like it….yes I do.
