Just heard,  huge loss. Not the way I wanted to go into the weekend. Nothing like the bass bombs heading into the other one,  that's what first hooked me. Time to crank up some good ones tonight

I am without speech. So many thoughts, though. He opened one Spectrum show with the line “ SO GLAD YOU MADE IT ! “, the stage went from black to that. They let Phil sing. Showstopper moment right out of the gate. Waited seven years for Box of Rain. Worth it. I had a cassette of, I think, spring tour ‘87, Spectrum, (there it is again) at the end of every song, while the crowd was screaming, Phil would play the lick from the next song. I don’t subscribe to the thought that the Phil Zone Is the spot in front of his speakers. I think the Phil zone is in the air. It’s everywhere. Especially now. Thanks for the memories.

I don’t know what to say, what a tremendous loss. The magnitude of his passing can’t easily be expressed with words. It’s felt the heart and soul. In the very vibrations of the Earth. May the 4 winds….

A life well lived.  RIP and eternal thanks for the memories.
I guarantee when he got to the pearly gates…..they said we’re not letting you sing up here buddy!  Stick to the bass.

I stopped seeing Phil cold about 10 years ago because I couldn't tolerate his taking vocals on so much classic Garcia/Hunter material. And pictures of his "Sunshine Daydream" event last summer in Marin had him looking extremely frail, so on one level it's not surprising.

But no matter; this one hits hard and deep. I learned of his passing last night while walking the narrow streets of Barcelona, making it that much harder to grasp. An hour later, an intense storm rolled in. Our hotel balcony looks across at the Barcelona Cathedral, and as the rain came pouring down a scintillating lighting and thunder show began behind the cathedral. As the thunder hits continued to rumble, I could only think this was for Phil.

While I can't currently crank some prime Phil moments on the stereo, I can still implore others to do the same. Start with 11-5-77 Rochester - Phil's epic bass solo to open the 2nd set and introduce Eyes of the World.

RIP, Phil.  🥲

The longer I live I find that this old world just seems to get colder and colder and I am lonelier than ever . I'm just glad that I had the chance to exist during a time when there was just a little love and warmth , I remember how the world was mine just waiting for me , till I found out it was waiting to crush me every day , but the sound of this distant warmth and love somehow made it okay . Thank You Mr. Lesh for helping to make this big scarry world a little more close , I'll never forget . You know , it's funny how much has changed .

My favorite Phil moment in the GD anthology is this performance of New Potato Caboose, where out of left field Phil propels the band into a space of musical sanctity. For creating that alone, one deserves the funeral procession of a hero for their modicum in elevating the consciousness of humanity. Rest in peace Phil and hope all of you are well.

remember when Phil stole JK  from us for Furhtur and then him and Bob sang all the jerry tunes lol , we couldn't say enough bad shit about him  , the old guys here know exactly what I'm talking about , just thought I'd bring that up for fun.

I remember right well. To quote Fritz the Cat, “happy times, heavy times.”

Yeah and I can't help thinking of all the times I saw Hunter beg Box as my favorite versions. It's cool that all these courageous dead bands rip St Stephen, esp DSO at Frontier Field and Annie's as a part of an all inclusive elective and a then during a 60's show at the Boulder Theater and they also treated us with the 83 recreation at the Taft the same night MC and Rude Dog skated off to the after show at Stanley's pub with Hyryder. And we get Cucamongas. Guess it wasn't in the dead's wheel house which would have been much better than Wave to the Wind. What a HUGE contribution to the world Mr. Lesh provided with the place in cali and touring all the time! Greg he did the same "So glad you made it" to open the Metrodome one 21 song set in 86 after the Greeks.❤️

it dawned on me today that all of the write ups that I read about Phil when he passed, they all talk about box of Rain , unbroken chain , St. Stephen,  but nobody mentioned Pride  of Cucamonga.  Never played live, so …..that’s interesting.

I have to admit ,as much as I tried to just celebrate his amazing life and how he survived such medical issues that he had , listening to these  songs on the day of his passing brought on the emotions ...
