So, when you say only one show, is it literally only one show, or one tour stop? Does two Or more nights in one town disqualify? I’m asking for a friend.

Just the one show is what we’re solving for.

Two nights in one town would be a no, e.g Alaska is a no.  They went up there fo Summer Solstice in 1980 (when the sun doesn’t set that far North), played three nights in a high school auditorium, and left, never to return.

Winner, Gr8fulpair!

South Carolina (somewhat surprisingly) only got 1 show.  It was a good one, though - Halloween 1985.  Space->Werewolves open.  🐺🐺🐺

Gotta be zero in North Dakota too, right?

Si, Senor!

That leaves us needing

only 1 more state with zero shows and

3 more shows with one show.

We’ll see if anyone else’s mosies in here on Garcia’s birthday.  If not, I may have to open it up to you all, my fellow addicts, so keep the Wheel turning.  🎡

Hawaii

I know JGB played there,  but I'm struggling to think of a dead show from there

Happy happy hippie birthday big man

We're all still glowing from your time on earth

JGB did play the somewhat recently released Hilo show, and others.

He took the Grateful Dead there on two separate, er, trips - in 1970.  😛

The good news, AC?  You can still guess!

1 state with zero; 2 states with one...

Joel - winner!

The five states that have never hosted a Grateful Dead show are:

1. South Dakota

2. North Dakota
3. Wyoming

4. Delaware

5. Arkansas

Thereby firmly establishing themselves as the most unhip places in the Land.

We need just 2 more states that have only hosted one Show.  And let the record reflect that John has already nailed those two, submitting them to me via PM.  😎

No hints, Greg!  There are some other peeps who may pop in today.  😉

Stay tuned.

Kansas (1)?

Fair guess, although Kansas has had 11 shows, believe it or not.

———————————

I’ll give some guidance on the remaining two states that have hosted only one show:

Both shows were in 1978, and both states are east of the Mississippi River.

That was my guess. Either that or Vermont. I based my choice on the same reason that they never played Delaware. They played Philly so much, right nearby. If they’re playing Boston and Maine, they don’t need to play nearby. This is not a hint, it just seems that way.

They cleared off that airport field in Vermont and played it in 1994 and 1995.  I heard the scene in 1995 was less than ideal, and epitomized the excessive sprawl that had become a late era Dead show.

But, to your point in another context a few days ago, Greg:  it was still a Dead show.

Not unlike DSO, even the GD would dot New England with shows; Providence, Worcester, Portland, Augusta, Hartford.  Not a lot of miles between those stops.

Nothing like life out West.  Takes 2 days to get from San Francisco to Portland, Oregon, haha.

I remember reading an article about the genius of their tour manager in the seventies, strategically playing college campuses to be able to get to play Hockey sheds, etc. They created a critical mass so as to fill those bigger venues. It also helped that they were the Grateful Dead. After my input on states near well played cities, I must disqualify myself. I cheated and looked up the answer. I couldn’t stand the suspense.

They did have a 1978 show.  But the Spring ‘77 scene hit Tuscaloosa.

On the same day Go To Heaven was released, they played Birmingham (4/28/80).

Then, in a somewhat surprise move, they took the whole circus to town in 1995 for two nights (April 4 and 5).  After several location-appropriate songs played in Memphis the stop prior, they did not play Alabama Getaway.

We stayed at the hotel right next to the arena,

and despite night one being a bit of a dud,

our group pushed fun to new heights.

     Praise DSO.
