Right the fuck into Good lovin’ !

I have seen so many of those openers in the past 3 years - like 7 or something. To the point let’s say, I say to myself, really???

Yea, I noticed that on the DSO set lists Right before we all got put on double secret probation. This is going to go into a bit of a thread drift but it leads into a universal of thoughts that I have on Dead set lists. It all depends on when we got started with shows. When they broke out a song, they played it a lot, then, not so much. Some stayed in rotation, some dropped out. Some came back, some did after many, many years. Some never came back. Like the layers of an onion, I let the Grateful Dead world unfold towards me at it’s own coincidental pace. That way it’ll last forever. (You’ll never accuse me of having too much too fast) It wasn’t until Bertha/Good Lovin’ showed up in a bunch of DSO set lists, that I realized that the Grateful Dead had a thing for that combo, also as an opener pairing. I’ve never seen it done. Hey, that was cool, it kept me researching the subject for a night or two. I got to play the Grateful Dead game for a couple of days! It’s fresh to me, that’s why I got excited at Bertha showing up as a suggestion. Oh, and good lovin’ too! That’s just because of how the Grateful Dead world has unfolded for me. My reality.
Ironically, my first six Grateful Dead shows had Good Lovin’ five times. Every song they played at my sixth show, I had seen them do before.  To the point that I took a break, was convinced that you didn’t need to keep going to shows. Boy, was I wrong. Actually, I keep relearning that lesson at every DSO show. Eternally Grateful to the band for opening me up to the music before when I started. I don’t believe that I would be studying that era like I find myself doing in recent years. This wouldn’t be that big of a deal in my life if it ended when Jerry  died. Instead, it has people close to me considering an intervention. They’re all like should we get him help or just let him die a deadhead? He is getting older.

Hey man, good to see you. Hope all is well. I’m liking the playin’ choice. A lot of possibilities with that as an opener. Maybe the whole show could be a playin’ sandwich with a couple of slices of Playin’ in the middle. I do believe something like that has been done before. ‘80?

LTGTR, probably my favorite opener that I experienced. Jack straw, Stranger, also nice openers. There’s actually a lot of songs with potential for first song back slot. So many have at least one lyric that fits this corona situation and/or long time gone theme. (Terrapin; is this the end or the beginning, for example) I’ve always thought that the sound bites of lyrics from each song in the set list make for a personality to the show. A Bobby night, a Jerry night, good old Grateful Dead Night. Kinda like a father/son talk. Maybe the More right answer is an original set list of songs that cumulatively cover the mood.
