desert island year of dead by month

sml

Recommended Posts

Build a year with only your best months in Grateful Dead history.

What's your favorite January/February/etc?

but only one of each.. twelve total.

Will some choose only Pig/Keith/Brent years?

May 72, 77, or 78?

Have fun :3

'76 does indeed need serious consideration for June.

Tea, I might like your '88 for July over '89. Hmmm....

My heart loves Hardpan's '85 for November but my head likes Tea's '73.  Because, for fuck's sake, Nov. '73!!! On the other hand, since I'd go '73 for Dec maybe best not to give it 2 straight months.

SML - excellent thought exercise, displaying Dead wisdom beyond your years. 😜 🤣

Thanks John, I gotta listen to more March 90, I’m familiar with the Knick run but that’s about it. Maybe this week I’ll put in some listening on it.  Love March 81 though

I implore you.

That month is hard wired in my brain.

July 88 would give you the Laguna Seca

China>Crazy>Rider>Playin' In the Band.

I gave 3/19/90 a listen today, made it up to the Foolish Heart, excellent so far. I think I’ve given a good number of these shows a listen, but I like hammering a show into my brain and then work around it. Sometimes further exploration doesn’t happen because I like the standby that I’ve hammered in, but I don’t really have one for this tour. Usually give the CT shows a listen first if I’m exploring a run of shows 😎

March 1990 is akin to May 1977 in that every note of every song is good.

Hardpan, you say you're familiar with the Albany run.  My hierarchy of the month puts Albany a touch above Cap Center, even with Hartford at best, and well beneath Hamilton and Nassau.  Nassau is the crowning jewel.

I’m sure by now you’ve made it to the Eyes in that set, specifically the outro jam into drums.  This Eyes was the last time it was played at the faster tempo, as the next time out was the slowed down, set 2 opener at Albany (and the one after that with Branford, of course).

Anyway, that jam has some texture that is completely unique.  Everyone here should hear it.

Love that show.

I had originally thought July '76, but I'm going through all of June right now and it's absolutely lit!

I'll continue right on through July I guess and see - Join me :3

The radio DJ banter from the broadcast of 1976-06-12 is priceless - A wonderful historic snapshot of how people were thinking about this band and culture.. in 1976 - Super cool and interesting.

When did the term Deadhead show up?

Inside cover of skull and Roses. Hey, Deadheads, where are you? Who are you? Followed by an address. Or something like that. Don’t quote me.

Quote is close enough.  Fall 1971.

DEAD FREAKS UNITE: Who are you? Where are you? How are you?
Send us your name and address and we'll keep you informed.
Dead Heads, P.O. Box 1065, San Rafael, California 94901.

That album came out in October ‘71. I remember buying it and Europe ‘72 together when the latter was released. By ‘76 we were referring to ourselves as Deadheads to the extent that we referred to ourselves at all.

SML starts the topic but makes no entry....I'll try.

Jan 1970...let's face it, Jan isn't a strong month.

Feb 1969...peak of this era

March 1981...just really good. 90 is great but I prefer early 80s

April 1971....classic GD

May 1972....Europe. One of the greatest tours ever

June 1983...

July 1989....gotta get some late 80s in

August 1982....aug is weak month, this one has a good chunk of shows. 74 was a thought but only 3 shows

Sept 1980....warfield run

Oct 1977...had to pass on May 77 but Oct is strong too

Nov 1973....this was the easiest choice for me. Is there anything better?

Dec 1986....these shows are are neat, have a nice slowed down feel to them. Never enjoyed the 78 nye shows that much....79 could be a taker too.

fortunately I am not bound to these choices!

...the hell was I thinking?!?  Lets try 1976 instead.  I'm into the meat of this Orpheum run and it's just soooooo excellent!  7/18 is the crown jewel but it's all wonderfully wonderful

I'm working my way through both June and July 76 trying to decide - It's tough...

I was gonna say July too, but June is absolutely lit, the Boston run especially.

And y'all keep posting awesome TIGDH shows slowing my progress...

Good exercise. I thought March, April, May and June were tough ones to narrow down. Decided not to repeat any years and that helped a decent bit.

May 77

I will say that I might be the only one who chooses March '93.

I need that glorious later material and some of this just absolute tops.

March 1993 faves, sml?
