Let us bypass the 36 song monster from

Boston Garden in 1973 for this performance

from the final spring tour.  Opening triad spot on,

HCS a great set opener and Unbroken #4, the

only encore UBC.  We were sitting in the tour bus

shuttle in the driveway at Graceland when Jerry walked

by getting the VIP tour.  Needless to say we all

lost our marbles.

Late March/Early April just a lovely time in

Grateful Dead land, the boys played on this

date every year from 1985-91.  This list from

the second night in Pittsburgh as spring tour

rolled on.  First set inverted opener, the Bertha

a little slow out of the gate.  Nice selections the

rest of the way in the first.  Second provides a

prime example of the machine at work, the pre

drums especially stomped.

Let us for a moment revel in this absurd list

from Spring 1985. 1 of 6 Walking the Dog.

Bottom [9], Superstitious [8], Revolution [11].

Only Big Boss Man of 1985.  And we have not

even mentioned Might As Well, GDTRFB or Althea.

Well, true confession, I skipped this spring  visit by Jerry and the boys to the Spectrum. I was living in Ocean City, New Jersey, putting together Grady White boats. My last show, every song they played, I had seen them play before. I was questioning the need to rack up shows. Rookie move. WMMR and Pierre Robert were covering the start of this show on the radio. I tuned in to catch that. Hearing Midnite Hour start with a thunderous bang, I instantaneously realized that I had totally fucked up and vowed to never make that mistake again. I didn’t, right up until the end. Thing is, the next year, between about eight beers, green world blotter, and the substance shared by the deadheads who pushed their Brokedown VW bus into the parking spot next to ours, which turned out to be Opium, that show was a psychedelic blur. Another mistake which led to me seeing all three nights the next spring. What a long, strange trip it’s been.

Boys return to the west coast in fine form.

Second set an exercise in chunk, Jerry certainly

feeling it on the way home.  I stalled the Bus on the

5 getting there, and with no starter everyone

got out and pushed.  Sunday while selling

grilled cheese preshow several customers recalled

the blue bus being assisted in LA traffic.

Jerry belts out an "I'd rather be with you" in that Standing On The Moon at Irvine '89 that resonates to this day.

As an interesting aside to that Irvine run, I spoke on a cell phone for the first time driving into the parking lot - in those days it was technically a "car phone".  A friend had borrowed her aunt's car, and said aunt had given her permission to use the installed phone. I called a buddy back in Ithaca to give him a blow by blow of our entrance to the lot. Wild memory!

June 1, 1991.  Los Angeles Coliseum.

I never paid attention to this show before today.  Seems like the vibe was not kynd from what is shared in this write-up.  17 minute Shakedowns are good, though.  Love the double opener pairings for the first four songs.

6/10/1973 - That there is a hearty-helping of some good 'ole grateful dead!  Has just about everything I'd need :)

Anyone know if DSO has ever done this show before?  It's length is problematic in this day and age.  If they haven't, Jubilee or Jamaica would be about the only spots I could think of where it's possible
