At Grateful Fest the year the elves were there…It was early Monday morning and I was given a bowl of oatmeal by a elven lady.  She then sang the complete Terrapin Station suite all the way through “Jack o’ Roses” and finished with “Leaving Terrapin”

Peace and Love,

Doc

Yesss Good thread!!!! I'll have to dig in for a response

Co-signing this post.

Although it appears that none of us are going to have a better reply than Doc's.

This is serious, though.  Lemme think about it.

10 offerings - some decent + some basic education

That's a really well done piece.  Impressive.

Hard to argue with much of that list though, especially 12-29-77. I'm not sure how one can put a 6 min 30 sec version into a top 10 list, but that's quibbling.  And ironically, on the same Deer Creek '93 date as the 24 minute Terrapin they played a 7 minute Dark Star.  Who'd have thunk it?.

Another fun thing to check out is the midi jam after Terrapin on 12-6-89.  Very unique and interesting work.

One that I remember distinctly was Hershey 85.

maybe no all time great, it might be one of the first that I was becoming more aware of what was unfolding in front of me.

I listened to that one a good bit on tape. 😃

At Omni 3/24/88 I remember gazing upon the crowd - front first section to left of Jerry - and thinking wow, this song is epic! The goodness was palpable and the energy from the crowd felt like worship.  And then puzzling over what all this hoopla was about a turtle.

I just offered some of this in the S/F transition thread that popped up after this one...

HeadyVersion is a great place on opinions for GOAT'ers.

http://headyversion.com/song/260/grateful-dead/terrapin-station/

I will offer the not very original thoughts that I have, once again, come up with for trying to define a favorite:

1.  I can't pick just one.

2.  Different eras (which are sometimes defined by who is playing keyboards) cause me to have different selections.

3.  I sometimes change my mind lol.

I'm still not settled here, but I suspect I will have one from 1977 and one from 1987/88.  The 6-23-93 Deer Creek version is/was indeed a spectacle in its own right, but it just doesn't do it for me like the mid-late 80's versions do.

Side note is that the inclusion of the Soldier Field 1995 version in the blog that is linked above is silly and obviously for sentimental reasons only (although the rest of that blog is spectacular, imo).

So I will continue to enjoy pondering this.  I wonder why I have been dreaming of turtles lately.

One other thing to share is that Sturgill Simpson apparently had a seed planted about turtles with him, too.  Pretty neat music for something different.
