helpfrankslip
living in the bay area during the 80's when the bus came by and i got on it didn't take long to become friends with the coolest folks from all over the country and the one thing I heard the most was how lucky we were dew to the amount of shows we got . I only went to one east coast show (Albany) imo that show was so much more intense than any I had seen out here only 15+yes I was late since I've never been a lucky enough witness to an east coast dso show you guys &girls don't no how lucky you are &is there a difference in the intensity of the crowd energy the playing just wondering
Forum MVP Mango Posted March 18, 2017 Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 18, 2017 Every night is unique- one coast is not better than the other. Some folks say East coast shows have more energy... West coast shows are more laid back. For DSO, both can be way overcrowded. People in the west coast, in my experience, tend to dance more. People on the east coast tend to be more content to stand in close proximity and Bob their heads. Not claiming one to more valid than the other.... I've had amazing experiences all over. Forum MVP 2muchfun Posted March 18, 2017 Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 18, 2017 In my experiences which was seeing the vast amounts of my GD shows on East Coast, a bunch in Midwest and only a handful west of Mississippi River....The west was way more laid back...never forget Cal Expo 86 shows with volleyball being played during the music. Forum MVP Tom Banjo Posted March 18, 2017 Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 18, 2017 There's so many angles to address this from that no one is going to have anything other than their own perspective. For a young dancer, the west coast can be way more intense. People really moving on close proximity and not necessarily welcoming. It can be scary. Like mango said I find more dancers total out west at the shows, east coast you mostly dance with a tight group and they know how much space you need. Security on the east coast tends to be way more intense and intrusive but it can be different anywhere. Some places don't seem to really know what coast they are and have vibes blended or in the middle. Colorado does not have a west coast style dance scene. I find people in general are more easy going not just as shows but in life in certain west coast locales. Vermont and the dance scene they've developed kind of throws the whole east coast west coast thing off. They very much have a west coast style dance scene going. Harder drug use seems more apparent and in your face on the East Coast. That makes for more intense and darker aspect of shows. I find musicals DSO brings the intensity wherever they go. I could say a lot more on this really. I really like to observe the scenes wherever I go see DSO play. I certainly compare and contrast but must remind myself that not one is better than the other. Some better fit my experience but they all seem to bring joy to their participants.
Weather Command
Regardless of coast, fans cannot stop talking at the shows. West coast fans talk less but still talk....I cannot stand it and honestly pisses me off. I understand getting excited and talking ( been there ) but the entire reason you go is to listen...the show at Ardmore for Jeff and Co. was absurd. Hopeful that those who tend to talk a lot, see this message and start to listen and dance instead...it makes for a great night!
Forum MVP Tom Banjo Posted March 19, 2017 Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 19, 2017 I had some major issues with talkers 2nd night at the ogden. It really detracted from my experience. I did not escape it very well. But I think they had a blast. Seemed like they spent 40 dollars to have a night out at the bar but who am I to judge. Some like to dance. Some like to talk. Forum MVP bs69 Posted March 19, 2017 Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 19, 2017 There's plenty of time to talk at the shows between songs and sets. Usually a nod or knowing glance gets the job done while the music plays
Forum MVP Mango Posted March 20, 2017 Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 20, 2017 We have have our moments- myself, Mason, and Bix included- in which we talk when we 'shouldn't' be. I prefer to treat the music with extreme reverence. It is truly like church for me.... But then sometimes I get more silly. Fun is good too... I'm learning to steer clear of making definitive statements because usually some situation arises where it longer seems suitable. But seriously people .... Shut up and dance

Forum MVP Tom Banjo Posted March 20, 2017 Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 20, 2017 I find myself talking less than most of my friends but I too am guilty at times. One of the hardest things with the shut up and dance is telling one of your close tour friends. Someone who saw Jerry and you have lots of respect for that they need to shut up. We are all guilty of talking at times but I think you would know the difference between that and an actual talker. For some people the conversation never ends. Forum MVP Tom Banjo Posted March 20, 2017 Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 20, 2017 Herdy was with me the 2nd night. He is more of a drinker and socialite than I am. He will talk during the music. He will even bother me at times. Even he couldn't wrap his head around this group. They didn't spend anytime engage in the music. They talked the whole 2nd set. I asked one of their group if you were bothering someone would you move away? She asked if she was bothering me? I responded immensely. She told me I could move. Which was true. If you asked mango, bix, or me to queit down I am 100 percent confident we would. Herdy and Jen eventually danced these people away wildly. We ended the 2nd set with a raucous dance party. I dropped my pants during throwing stones for first time in maybe 7 years. We thought it was hilarious.
