Beautiful space to share love and sunshine and to hide away from the world a while in paradise and find harmony within and without. To see kindness in action soothes my soul.

The carpet had been rolled out. I have two different temp Los Muertos  tattoos now and enjoyed the beach ball play by the pool musical sets and the yummy buffet and drinks and chocolate covered strawberries. Late night snacks hit the spot afterwards with pizza and soft serve ice cream and grate company.

The bus broke a belt on the way to the hotel MEGAPLEX. We popped off on the side of the road, being an hour from Cancun (does it really mean pit of snakes in Mayan?). It was a VW and like any good VW driver, he got us rolling again in no time. There were more SCI fans on our bus than DH. The cutest couple sat in front of us and we partied with them off and on through the weekend, gleaning what Cheeseheads like and what was amazing outside our own experience to those versed in SCI. Cheeseheads are just as into their scene and creative in dressing to celebrate fun times.

I would guesstimate there were 1000 festival revelers there in total- kind deadheads and some familiar faces. High fives and sweaty hugs and kisses and stickers and buttons and even a book on research gathered from investing using deadhead principles!

Down at the venue, there was a full buffet every evening at 5pm - 12 or so; beautiful decorations with hammocks swinging from the trees and flowers made into Chitchen- Itza and a huge Los Muertos Con Queso Medallion for photo ops. There was also a wall blocking the beautiful cove…. they played pink Floyd the Wall I think for reality check one day during intermission. One day some locals dressed in traditional Mayan ceremonial wear. The ladies, fenced-off, port-a-john area had attendants,  and my lady took good care and looked out for me, maintaining her stalls nicely - showing me the one with lights and running water. I kept her in tips- best $10 ever spent and she was such a sweetheart. The employed were so nice. Our friend Tim learned all the servers names he saw and they kept him in drinks. He said he couldn’t stop because he worried they would be sent home for the decline in beer consumption. lol

Los Muertos Jan 25

Set I: Uncle John’s Band, Here Comes Sunshine, West L.A Fadeaway (BW), Little Red Rooster (BW) > Crazy Fingers (TH), Jack Straw (BW)

Set II: China Cat Sunflower (TH) > I Know You Rider (all), Tennessee Jed (BW), drums > Mountain Jam > Death Don’t Have No Mercy (BW), Sugar Magnolia (BW) > Sunshine Daydream (BW)

Encore: Liberty (BW)

UJB- the first days ARE the hardest days- traveling we were all tired ! and when you come to the other side of those, YES! let’s go. Your kindness is all I ever need. We were ready to feed our souls with song and fill the dance in our hearts and soles. It was quite incredible to be that close again to Bob and Billy. It had been since I was on the rail at Hampton for GA in 1989. "Here Comes Sunshine" was very slow and languid like a calm sea, beginning and end, BUT with  a ripping jam session in the middle. I “left" during West LA - you could hear the music in your room- and came back for a fantastic Red Rooster-  the best I have heard in a long while.

Crazy Fingers- "Gone are the days we stopped to decide where we should go, we just ride. Gone are the broken eyes we saw through in dreams gone, both dream and lie.” It is wonderful freedom to trust life and love what is coming your way- letting go of control and mistrust. Holding faith and living trust ! If you can love walking in faith and trust- the universe will bring exactly what you need and your heart will whisper what comes next in the story of creation. There needs to be a reconciliation with power. "Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at best is love implementing the demand of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.” “ The shift from power to love takes us form a chain of command to a web of connections from hierarchy to holarchy, from competition to collaboration, from ego system to ecosystem, from greed to green, from markets to networks, from limited growth to sustainability, and from love of power to the power of love”- Anodea Judith, PhD.

I have said it before- Trump is Jack Straw in his methodology. Settling scores and points of pride- there is no rest and peace in that mindset! Power without love keeps you on the run. So- I happen to see an eagle flying above Crystal Lake in the Olympic Peninsula on 7/4/16. How precious this life is. and our freedom. Praying for kindness.

Bob seemed to be kind of under the weather- I noticed he didn’t sing as loud and as much, taking turns with T. Hamilton. I wonder if he felt badly. The sickness I had, had caught up to Joe. China Rider was fine- not stellar. I enjoyed Tennessee Jed.  Mountain Jam,,,, I know it is Allman Brothers but I couldn’t help but hear Donovan”s “ First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is" in the refrain. I like the power of the mind to subscribe or simply let something go. It is powerful——  It can change your life. Letting go or stepping into a space.

Like SCI said- (this was their song for me- not often do you find a new song that you really really like). I really, really like the beat and groove- almost like  “ Country Boy will Survive”.

"Looks like you're down again.  Feel pushed around again. Now if you need a friend
I will listen to what you send
Somebody done you wrong
Saw it coming all along
Now peace of mind is gone
You can change that if you're strong

Chorus:
Sing a new song
Leave the past behind
Take a closer look at now
And see what we can find
Sing a new song

I see a shining light
Cut through the dark of night
You don't have the right
To keep that I tuck inside
In your mind try to see
Just who you want to be
Now you've got the key
You've got to turn it and set yourself free”

The power of a phoenix state of mind. Thank God above for forgiveness and abiding love

We headed out during Death Don’t and strolled by the waterside home. By the time we got back to our complex area, I passed a statue of the Angel of Liberty in the quiet of midnight. and there it rose- Bob sang Liberty.

1/26/2017

We saw an advertisement on the way in. The attraction was billed as “Heart Speeding” instead of "Heart Racing". The whole time we had a heart speeding good time.

Thursday afternoon, Chris Robinson and Neal Casal were playing acoustically poolside. We just couldn’t get it together the day before in time to see the full band open for Los Muertos. It was intimate with people in the pool and gathered all around. They probably played an hour. Quite pensive music- easy with a touch of bittersweet. I recognized NRPS “ Last LonelyEagle" many of us have probably felt like the last lonely eagle.  I couldn’t help but think of the dolphin show Weir had shut down during his stay and think of Leilani Munter’s activism. The day so beautiful and free- a nice respite to be lazy.  They sang of love and perspectives on life. " when I am feeling sad, I remember the sweetness of your kiss"  "sometimes high is not the top" . " sweeten your sour with a little honey" "remember the peace you had up on the mountain and remember the love you have with me".

That night, I was close to the water’s edge when the show seemingly began. The 4 appeared and began loosely jamming, never really getting down to something concrete. They started 15 min late. Just the four without Weir. Jackie Green stepped out second song, motioning if they wanted him there and began to play. There was a feeling of uncertainty everywhere. It was palpable on stage.
Jam>
Scarlet>
Fire
Ramble on Rose
MS 1/2 step-
Me and My Uncle>
Big River
Birdsong
Sugaree
As Me and My Uncle started, for me, despondency set in. We walked away from the stage and area in front of soundboard and hung out in one of the many hammocks swinging from palm to palm. I don’t even recall the Birdsong nor Sugaree.  I was concerned more than anything. Don’t tell me it is expected from Weir. Really? I am sure there were many days he played feeling less than par. Why the darkness and judgement? Does that really get a good return on investment? Where is innocent until guilty? Some were very hard. Others worried. I thought of Bill Kreutzman. He was looking forward to jamming out in paradise with his buddy, right?.

Set II
Bertha>
This felt right. It was a call to shake off the dis-ease. It was strong and fierce and together. The guys must have decided to rock it out. A call to Arms!!

And there it rose the sweetness and it was just lovely and delicate and long and circled and returned. Like Cooper’s hawks floating on the wind high in the sky….
Birdsong… It dipped in and out and was like a fragrance wafting on the ocean salty breeze.
Scott was around and we agreed the mood had changed and the good vibes abounded The whole rest of the show kicked it.
Loose Lucy-
It was all out jamming from here as far as the eye could see. And 8 people ended up on stage. Bongos sound awesome during Eyes.

The music was more fluid and jamming. It was like the doors had been flung open wide.
Eyes
Drums
Morning Dew Wow----Really poignant. Grateful for what is here and matters most.
Yeah, and some jerk gave the band double birds. I can’t  understand it. The beautiful lovely moments I hold as precious in my heart. There is no time to hate. I want to fall into the loving arms of the universe. Love is always on the air- just look and seek light.
Shakedown- seems about right- you see what you hold in your mind and create what you hold. funkiness and fun abounded  2 on keys- piano and organ

E Big RR Blues ---!! Just a rocking way to close out the day. So much life to celebrate.

The crowd was jubilant. We yelled. We cheered and yipped and whistled. In the quiet, I praised Billy. I wanted him to know the gratitude I had for the weekend and all the Dead has created throughout the years. He was only 30 yds from me. The cheers continued.  Billy came around and told us Bob was sick. His voice carried the sadness over Weir's abscence. Kreutzman was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love. Billy teared up. Luckily I didn’t have to yell to give him a hug. It was so sweet. Tommy Hamilton came out and gave him comfort and the rest gathered around and they cemented a fantastic night as it should have been honored.

Billy said they are from California and the food is much different in Mexico. (YES !) And made the gesture that he was throwing up.

There are buffets of food sitting out - meat sitting. I ate freshly made stuff- recently finished grilled chicken - smoked salmon- cooked eggs. I stayed away from the pork and mysterious meats and mayo based salads.

At a Clemson game tailgate,  the people with me ate grilled chicken and got deathly sick. It happened to have sat a while and grew out some funky junk. I never felt so terrible as the day I drank tea at a school function. Catered, the level of sickness was proportional to the amount of tea one consumed. I really thought death would be welcomed. It hit 9 hours afterwards and left me incapacitated. Never ever have I been sicker.

Hot sauce is the the secret I believe to staying well. I ate a habenero or salsa every meal.

SCI is relentless in energy. They had the sound blasting- I thought the port-a-John walls might cave in. They are musical salad, not just the bluegrass sound I recalled. One jam sounded like some disco that would have played during Starsky and Hutch chase..

Thanks Jen....You said it all...Great surprise seeing you and Joe!!!

I should've added that the Mountain Jam inspite of Donovan inspiration was in remembrance of Butch Trucks.

I loved seeing you digging the Loose Lucy second night. 🕺🏻
