I dig seeing this well done mini doc of our favorite band and music. Thanks for posting this Rude!

This is a great segue for a topic that I have been wanting to start a thread about for a couple years. (What can I say, I am a devotee of 'Swami Procrastinandi' who is always there to remind us, "why do today, what you can do tomorrow"?)

I've had a pipe dream for some time that a thoughtful full-scale documentary movie would be made about DSO and the DSO experience on both sides of the rail. Basically, it would be a project that is a modern version of the original "Grateful Dead Movie" which I find to be a phenomenal piece of work that did a fantastic job of capturing a particular time and space within the GD long strange trip. I imagine an intelligent and tasteful flick that is well done to the point where even someone who has little or no connection to the GD and their music might actually find it quite interesting. DSO is its own unique phenomenon that would be well worth documenting to this degree.

I imagine something that would take a year or two to create as there would be footage from all aspects of touring throughout the year including indoor and outdoor shows as well as ample footage from immersion experiences like the Jubilee and Jamaica. Like the Ojai video from above, lots of footage of heads of all ages talking about what this band means to them, their history with GD music and why they attend multiple shows year after year; tour heads, the culture of free-flow dance, the psychedelic experience, as well as plenty of coverage to help us all get a glimpse of touring life from the band's perspective: life on the tour bus, life on tour in general, what their life is like when not touring, thoughtful interviews with band members and their family members about what this lifestyle is like for them in addition to the stage, sound, merch and lighting crews and their perspective and hours of wake, work, and sleep while on the road.

Intelligence, humor, and weirdness sprinkled in throughout with plenty of live music mixed in capturing the ebb and flow of an actual show experience.

Not necessarily something for movie theaters except for maybe rare showings here and there but created as a DVD I guess. If I had a year or two open, a hundred grand lying around, filming and editing skills and a tighter connection to band members,,maybe I would make a proposal to them. I think it could be a hell of a fun project to take on for the right team of people with the right skills if the band was open to it.

It would be really nice to be able to have this level of documentation from this era right now (when the band is clearly firing on all cylinders so consistently) to watch now as well as 20 to 30 years out from now. Just sayin'.

Maybe I'm not the only one who has pondered this idea or can relate to the general vision???

Added ideas or feedback??

And you know that notion just crossed my mind...

There was a small crew working on just such a project (if a tad less ambitious) at Gratefulfest in '07 or '08. They interviewed fans and band, filmed crowd scenes and select songs during the shows, and from outward appearances it was fairly professional. The effort looked like it was getting a good if brief view of the Starhead phenomenon. Seems like we heard it was in post-production editing prior to relief but then nothing further so far as I know.

The torch is yours, Huck. Get some corporate sponshorship (maybe some green entrepreneurs) and run with it!

Yeah,,I think I remember seeing some of the interviews from those grateful fest films that you speak of...was well done.

I don't think the torch is mine other than seeing the vision as there are definitely those among us who have excellent filming and editing skills (definitely not me!)...including the guys who made the Ojai video which is a pretty amazing example considering it was all done at just one show.
