ducats
not sure why i'm trying this...........all the comparison stuff going on: I know i'm redundant and simplifying when I say u either got (before he died) it or u didn't, so let's try it another way. what we got could only be gotten from the fat man. DSO is trying to recreate it. we all know original music can never be original again, but DSO comes close enough where somebody experiencing it can "get it" (whatever that is ) like we did before he died. all this "we're just trying to take the music further....." is crap. it came from him. he died. further no more. is that Aiko (Saratoga) bad? NO. Compared to that fall of the stool El Paso in NYC it's a masterpiece. But could somebody get it from it? NO. Is that taking the music Furthur? NO. Is it all they got. YES. Anybody who never saw the fat man and wants to try and get it is much better off at a DSO show vs anything else - it's not even close which is what I think made me post. not even close. Forum MVP Tom Banjo Posted June 24, 2016 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 24, 2016 I think the only way to get it post Jerry's death is to deeply study his music. I know ducats you not sure yet that i get it. I don't listen to dso at home. I only listen to the grateful dead and a little jgb. I'm very knowledgeable and well versed in most things dead. I think part of getting it is wanting to see it live, dance, and take part in a community of fellow fans.
ducats
I don't believe I ever said u don't get it. I believe I questioned your desire to be watched while getting it.
Forum MVP PoetryGirl Posted June 24, 2016 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 24, 2016 So, I've danced with MC. He is about the energy of the moment. And shares it with those grooving in the moment, too. He is a bright sparkly bundle of dance energy.

Forum MVP John A Posted June 24, 2016 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 24, 2016 This whole "getting it" business is quite the concept, made infinitely debatable by the inherently nebulous and wide ranging potential of its very definition. For starters: Does one need to be a "dancer" to GET IT? No. But if you see someone enthusiastically expressing themselves through elaborate dance moves, the chances are probably enhanced. Does one need to have seen Jerry to GET IT? No. But it can't have hurt. Must one be a true student of the music and the history to GET IT? No, but one who is those things almost certainly GETS IT. If one enjoys hearing Phil sing eyes or Weir sing Day Between can they still GET IT? Man, I guess so but that's pretty sketchy. If one rejects the concept of DSO out right can they GET IT nonetheless? Again, maybe so, but quite sketchy and incredibly close minded. If one doesn't react to Garcia bellowing "I want you to Laaaaayyyyyy me down" at the end of MSG 9-18-90 with goose bumps or at least something akin to that can they still GET IT? Absolutely fucking not.

Vic81
That was an excellent post JohnA. There are Many ways one can "get it". I myself have a very large selection of GD music and a few DVDs. Have also read several books from members and others. This makes me feel like a pretty good student of this band. That's my connection to Jerry and his music, his life and the band...having never seen the man. Phil and bobby singing anything is pretty sketchy period. Last Phil and friends show Phil was pretty tough to listen to. And bobby.. We all know what's he's like these days.Def a hit or miss. But still love them. Going to dead and co Saturday so I hope he actually sings. If you reject DSO in anyway...your an idiot and you don't "get" a damn thing!!! Enough said. That being said to lay me down 9-18-90 is absolutely amazing. May I add that the 10-30-80 at radio city version on the dead ahead DVD.... You can see Jerry's face and see him pour his soul out, the look on his eyes is mesmerizing...and when he belts that to lay meeee downnnnnnn at the end...I "GET IT"...that's one of the MANY songs when I feel the connection... The Hairs on my neck stand up and Ive got the biggest shit eating grin on my face...love this music

Brian NJ
First saw them in 74, what's to get? We all know the lot is the best thing about a show. Before shakedown there was the "lot".

Forum MVP Tom Banjo Posted June 24, 2016 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 24, 2016 Bobby blew me away on days between at red rocks. Crazy psychedelic. I also was the guinea pig on some random powder. It wasn't what I thought it was. However, I love that song and seek to get off on it. Could barely stand that night. Wouldn't say I was receiving much but my mind was blown. The best days I've seen live was definitely with jk and dso. Btw, I walked out of Bobby broke down encores. I can't stand hI'm singing jerry ballads but there was that time at red rocks. So maybe I don't get it. I sometimes crave attention to fill the void I feel from my own insecutity. I truly love to dance. I've met very few people who know more about the dead and their music than me. My friends going to panic tonight at red rocks. The dogs and I going to fire up some of the thing sit by the fire.
Forum MVP Mango Posted June 24, 2016 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 24, 2016 Let's get real people- there's no 'it'to get. 'it' defies definition, attempts to define 'it' are limited in their depth. The music, the whole experience, is deeper than words can express. There's no rules in grateful dead- except that one. There's no way to quantify how much someone 'gets it' and there's no measuring stick to stand next to. There's some ego in need of checking here. Is it you? Statements just seem vain at last~
Vic81
I was expressing was my personal connection to this music. And others lack of connection, that's all. We all know it's pretty obvious at certain shows people could care less. I've listened to GD since 93 I was 12, that's more than half my life. That's a blink of an eye to the guys who have 30-40-50 years and tons of shows under there belt. I'm a young buck, wet behind the ears. Green. We spoke about westbury and how 2/3 of the crowd was there for everything but the music. But I was schooled on that topic and told that this had been going on for a very long time, more people along for the party and everything else but the music. Some people have a much bigger connection than others. Some people listen and feel something totally different than others. There's still many who just wanna come out and get smashed. There ALOT of knowledgable veterans on here with decades of experience and I respect and love there views and story's. I enjoy And love reading everyone's show reviews and other story's and good times. There's no measuring stick, just experiences, shows, good friends and time on this earth with this music. Maybe there's no IT to get, but there's def something more to this music and shows than words can express... that's correct. More than anywhere else.I'm pretty sure everyone here feels it too. Just my views...no offense bros.

Forum MVP 2muchfun Posted June 25, 2016 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 25, 2016 I was mandated to take remedial English in high school as I used the word "it" in composition too much for the educators liking. ""No one knows what "it" refers to"" they would tell me. As I found out for myself there are plenty of people who don't get it and fewer that do. Easier to tell who gets it than the meaning of it itself.

Forum MVP John A Posted June 25, 2016 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 25, 2016 Of course there's no real and meaningful definition for "get it". But this is a discussion forum for goodness sake, so why not spew on a bit about it anyway? Isn't that what the boards are here for?
