Forum MVP Tea Posted April 5, 2016 Forum MVP Report Share Posted April 5, 2016 I think I'm gonna be sick. You can't seem 'em all even though you have done and continue to do your level-best to not miss a moment. Here is the slate: Cold Rain & Snow, Me & My Uncle, Easy Wind, Cumberland Blues, Black Peter, Next Time You See Me, China Cat Sunflower-> I Know You Rider, Turn On Your Love Light Hard To Handle, Casey Jones, Mama Tried-> High Time, Dire Wolf, Good Lovin'-> Drums-> Good Lovin'-> I'm A King Bee, Uncle John's Band, He Was A Friend Of Mine, Alligator-> Drums-> Alligator-> Caution (Do Not Stop on Tracks)-> We Bid You Good Night The original was definitely on the mellow-side (for 1969) so I wonder if DSO put a little more spin on it. I suspect it was great show from start to finish but I have a feeling that the Alligator > Caution > WBYG F: St. Stephen was particularly feverish. Good Stuff Looks like a Pig Barraco meltdown! Yes indeed a great show start to finish and I wouldn't characterize it as mellow even though the tempo was able to slow down at times with slower moving tunes. But the Easy Wind jam sparked off a fire that burned hard and strong all night....band stoking it up big time throughout with high energy jamming--China-Rider-Lovelight and then burning hotter than hell during second set opening with hard to handle/ Casey Jones and stoke some more for Good Lovin. The High Time was gorgeous...and that early Uncle Johns had a unique flavor to it...kinda felt like the wheel going into it. I love seeing/hearing the band stretch to play these tunes in the old school style since they are so used to playing later versions. I have been lucky to have bagged a couple '69's and an old school (all pre '70) elective before this show and what I note about this show is that it was still such a thorough old school kick in the ass, yet without some of the kinda typical Dark Star, Viola Lee, Eleven,,that often shows up for '69. I thought it was a '70 show with all the Workingmans Dead material....so when was the first uncle Johns? Such a fantastic night and forgot to mention Lisa rippin on harmonica here and there throughout. Even a Monday night can be a raging party in Eugene... Thanks for all of it
Mantooth
Fantastic show. First slew of songs had me thinking about Workingmans Dead. Easy Wind has some drum sounds that are astounding. First Uncle Johns played on 12-4-69, (Deadbase 10). Band member did quickly mention after a some initial songs that they were doing early versions. Well done. Even some vocal arrangements were slightly different. Good listenening on their part. Caution, Do Not Step On These Tracks made my night. Anthem of the Sun was what made the Grateful Dead stick in my mind back then from all the other great music that was played. DSO did a good job on Caution for a piece of music that is hard to replicate, especially the jam/feedback at the end. Like East West from the Paul Butterfield Blues Band it's a one time deal and next time you get just go there and see what happens. Way to go DSO !
