Forum MVP PoetryGirl Posted February 27, 2016 Forum MVP Report Share Posted February 27, 2016 We had a great show in our home town last night. This 5 man group with both Rob and Ronnie McCoury and including James Carter (fiddle) and an amazing flat picker played some originals written by the bass player called Traveling, The Striker and Messed Up Right and others by Waylon Jennings, the Grateful Dead, John Hartford and Doc Watson. We were treated to Lonesome Orn'ry and Mean, Cumberland Blues, Loser, and Walk out in the Rain by Robert Zimmerman (Dylan) adapted to Bluegrass to name some. Lightning Fingerpicking and good harmony. What a great night ! Go see them if they come your way. It will be well worth it. upload gif
Forum MVP John A Posted February 28, 2016 Forum MVP Report Share Posted February 28, 2016 I haven't seen them without Del but wow are those guys tight. I didn't know they played Dead songs but I did know that Ronnie sold Jerry a banjo back stage before a show ('93 maybe?). Del of course, played with Bill Monroe, so Jerry had the utmost respect for those guys. Minor correction - Jason Carter is the fiddle player's name. Forum MVP PoetryGirl Posted February 28, 2016 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted February 28, 2016 Cool! Jason Carter had rosin coming up in plumes like his fiddle was smoking.... And it was !! The whole night was just a fine example of great musicianship. The flat picking was very impressive. I was surprised to hear those tunes and Cumberland Blues was awesome ! The hardest part was staying seated on the front row. I saw Del McCoury Band in 2008 Warren Haynes Christmas Jam and they were great. Although hearing John Paul Jones play Going to California and When the Levee Breaks was crazy good (unexpected guest), the Del McCoury set still stands out in my memory.
