The package comes in a substantial wood box and the CDs are under a hinged top cover.  Beneath the CDs are two compartments that open downward; one holds a tied scroll and the other holds a soft leather bound book, half of which is a 200+ page piece by Nicholas Meriwether and the other half of which includes anecdotes by fans over the years.  The artwork on the box is beautiful.  Each CD package has a brief blurb by David Lemieux describing the given show.  Of the few blurbs I’ve read there is some shameless Lemieux cheerleading, but given that’s partly what they pay him for so be it.

The first disc I listened to was 7/3/66 Fillmore and what a revelation.  To say I’ve never heard a ’66 recording sound this good is an understatement.  And it’s a complete 2 hour show.  To have this representation of, in particular, Jerry’s and Phil’s ’66 sound is precious.  Although it’s a bit odd to hear Jerry’s guitar panned hard right while all vocals are panned hard left! But no matter, this is an amazing recording by Bear, made that much more impressive by knowing that the quality of the band’s sound in general was largely his doing at that stage.

In fact, pulling out another year at random (1985), I was struck that the ’66 recording sounded better! Not that one has accused the vault recordings from the early to mid-80s of being particularly good.

In any event, it’s easy to argue this release, massive as it is, is grossly overpriced, but I’m very excited to have it.

WOW, thank you! funny thing I came into work today (last day before heading to the gulf) and have been enjoying Cincy 85 like I've never heard it before. That is a perfect choice for an 85 selection. Been wonderin where and when DSO is going to throw this one down? I was thinking it might have been one of those fall Richmond shows. Yeah, I could see getting this collection, as my car stereo has stripped me of using my cassette collection.
