Anybody else pick this up?  Now available on Amazon.

The last DeadBase I own is IX, so I couldn't help grabbing this.

Unfortunately, the updates were not able to be incorporated into the original software. So beyond the Phil & Friends, Ratdog, etc. lists that go through 2014 what's really new here is the massive "updates" section. It's really just a reprint of DeadBase XI with a separate section for new info. Same with the GarciaBase.  The massive amounts of udated info appear separately from the main Base.

Hard to swallow for $90, given that the contemporary set list info (Phil & Friends, Furthur, etc) is of very little interest to me.

That said, there are some new writings, including two essays written by yours truly.

Nine huh !? Well maybe I should look into this one as I have Deadbase III. Haha. It cost a fortune back in 1990!! I paid $40 or more for it then. I remember thinking I could pick up some really good stuff instead ....- BUT it was like winning the lottery to score that gem off the lot. I could decifer those tapers lists I had and make some choice tape decisions !! And peer into the past and read the history of the grateful dead in song ...

Having the GarciaBase with the fulls stats is pretty key, and that was a gaping hole in DeadBase IX.

I mean, if you need to know the last time Jerry played Mystery Train ('83), or Catfish John ('85), you got's to know.  Or what about the date of that show at The Warfield Jerry played the only post '87 Love in The Afternoon (5-22-91)?  It was 3rd song, and a clusterfuck at will call caused me to get in mid way through song #2.   Close one!  And a freakishly rare time at a Dead or Jerry show I missed the opener...taping will do that to you.

Just last week I got an iPhon for the first time. I'm having fun learning all the stuff it can do.  So I asked Suri, "When was the last time Jerry Garcia played the song "Love in the Afternoon"  She answered, "I don't see any Jerry Garcia movies matching "The Song" playing nearby tomorrow in the afternoon".  Seri did not do any better with "Mystery Train" or "Catfish John."  Seri seems to associate Jerry with movies however I ask, even when giving additional information to imply music.  So I guess Apple does not have a copy of DeadBase yet either.   I wonder about Microsoft's new "Cortana"?

Peace Love and I Guess We Really Do Need DeadBase 50

Torin, you aren't kidding about sourcing DeadBase XI.  It's been going for as much as $600+.

Doc, one interesting aspect about DeadBase is that it is a piece of reference material that the internet never supplanted.  Folks surrounded by computers still reach for their dog-eared copies routinely.

yea you can grab one on amazon for $2,900 rght now i believe..

this is what is no longer in use... http://www.dharmarose.com/deadbase/dbsearch.html

if u knew the deadbase language of exactly typing songs with > and " " and how they were titled by deadbase   you could essentially search for any segue of songs, at any time, at any venue..or find things out immediately compared to thumbing through the book..used it everyday..sad..

I'm definitely in the minority and a major hypocrite (typing this on a smart phone) but I got some advice. Stop talking to you're phone, get a deadbase, and find a friend to talk with. I think I will grab a copy of this.

I did, but always found it clunky.  At best a weak substitute for the hard copy.  And then it was gone...

A computer database might be more efficient in looking up specific questions but with a book you will tend to come across more interesting information that you just stumble into. A book can be opened to a random page where you just start learning new things.

Doc, having been in the printing industry for the last 25 years it warms my heart to hear you and John A extol the virtues of the hard copy. I'm not preaching cause I use the Internet probably more than I should, but usually with something specific in mind. It is easy to get carried away in a book, particularly for me one filled with facts and stats. There is no smaller carbon footprint than sitting with a book by candlelight.

oh for sure..i fumble through deadbase more so than any other book that i own,,ever have owned.. ...i will open the book randomly say hmm what were all the second set openers in 81, how many Stagger Lee's in 1978, move on to Most played, Every time played,,all the Bertha>Lovin's in 77, how many WharfRats in 85,,most popular encore of 73, most common first set closers of 87..deadbase has all the answers..there's no book that gets my brain moving like a deadbase. .....would use the online version daily as i would look up specific dates/venues/songs all interchangeably ..like i said if u knew how to use that search engine it was more powerful than the book..i promise u that...the book cant tell u instantly and make appear on one page how many Bucket> Sugaree's they did in 87,88,89 ...or how many Stranger>Franklin's they did, or Sailor> Saint> Deal's ..or anything  like that thats just an example

It is a early happy birthday to me on my son's 14th birthday today. I ordered it !!

Yes , 9/11 on my grandmother's birthday the blessing he is was underscored in how rich we are! We began celebrating with French toast and Woods Hole honey, a hostel in VA. (Just the loveliest slice of heaven) and a gift of Pylos, a strategy game because we love the Quoridor game so much.

Now .,,,,Kids at school, coffee cup in hand after a very very busy work week and I am snuggled up with this trove of treasure !!!

Indeed the words such a long long time to be gone and short time to be there come to mind. To see all the shows I attended in one place ..,... And the GarciaBase !! Nice pics - even one of Rob B. (But no Brent Pic. : (. ) Tom Constantin has some show review essays. I must say, a nice statistical review by John greeted me as I opened it up. The story of lost tapes,

What a glorious beginning to the day.!

Note the dates (89!), excuse the typos:

"John Scott, you dead archivist, are you bald yet.
We all know your balding.
Seriously though (although we both know about your hair),
how about some hair statistics in deadbase?
Like When Phil cut his beard, When Jerry grew his, when did
Jerry start wearing red shirts and when did he stop
(Trouble Ahead - Jerry In Red, remember this one?). How bald is
Bobby (we all know he's receding).
Looking forward to Deadbase III, I know it will occupy endless
hous as I space to DS. keep up the Fantastic Work.

                       Bald Ted"

How great.
