Forum MVP Rude Posted July 4, 2015 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 4, 2015 Ripple Shakedown Sunrise Brown eyed women I need a miracle Cumberland Keep on growing Eyes Birdsong Hey pocky way Scarlett It hurts me too Terrapin--full suite Drums/space I'll take a melody One more Saturday Brokedown Pat mallinger on sax most of night. This guy is a sax GOD. If DSO said we are taking a sax on tour from now on I'd be like hell yes if it's Pat. He was that good. Reed Mathis came out for birdsong and hey pocky way. And if you weren't aware he was the guy who thumped the shit out of the place. I've never heard a bass cranked that loud and during birdsong and it was awesome!!! It was literally the loudest bass I've heard at a DSO show during that birdsong. Webmaster Ed played organ during hey pocky way. Rob k gave an amazingly inspirational talk about Scott during set break. I haven't been around that long but I cried with him. It was one of the most moving talks I've seen. Then we watched some video clips. If it was a straight mind you had, we woukdvt have known you all these years. He had some Brent chops!!!! Full terrapin. Yummy again. I'll take a melody was just perfect out of space. Polar opposite the night before. Laid back dancy show vs that serious 69. Tons of room vs zero room. hey pocky way vs death don't. The gf got lots of songs she wanted to hear. Seeing her lipping along to brokedown palace made me proud that I've created another deadhead . She calls herself a happy head but whatever. Next time u guys do Chicago get pat to play. I never liked sax with my dead until tonight. No wonder he played on almost every song. He was that good. Forum MVP Mango Posted July 4, 2015 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 4, 2015 Reed Mathis is a beast. I've seen him play with Stu at least 5 or so times and with the Wingmen twice (meh). It's fun to watch him- he has incredible control over his picking (right) hand. Looks like he is strumming chords when he is actually playing single notes. Definitely a heavy thumper~
Forum MVP Tom Banjo Posted July 4, 2015 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 4, 2015 I saw him play in Jamaica. I thought music slipped a notch whole he played. I really don't care for his own band. Also, I love me some skippy. Really liked Molo in jamaica. I guess I got to give reed another try. I'm sure I will see reed with the wingmen or Billy and the kids sometime soon. Forum MVP comesatime Posted July 4, 2015 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 4, 2015 "with the Wingmen twice" (meh) I hear ya on that and to be completely honest , I'm not in love with the wingmen either , they had a couple moments when I saw them and that's it ... JK with Melvin and the JGB is where the good music is at ... I wish I could spend a little time up north to catch some of those tasty Stu shows and I wish DSO would start showing SoCal some love again , it seems like they abandoned us down here ... Advisory Board Dr. Barry Posted July 4, 2015 Advisory Board Report Share Posted July 4, 2015 Well kids, I was glad to be there representing in a Vic that was 1/4 capacity. Makes sense and good for us with all that space. This was an incredible tribute to Scott. and the band knocked it out of the park. I've never experienced it like that before. Bring back Reed Mathis for a song only so Skip can come right back take his bass to a level beyond belief. Let Pat Malinger play forever. He fits in like he is a member of the band. So perfect. Everyone was playing on all cylinders. It was very, very special. I am so glad I was there. This was one for the record books. Dr. B

He was just perfect. He had some psychadelic sax where I thought cotter was adjusting volume levels to create an echo effect but no it was just Pat. Honestly don't know how he was so in touch with everything going on. Always thought the Branford stuff was just a novelty but Pat elevated the band last night. Great stuff. And how loud was reed on bass. Holy shit. That birdsong didn't sound like a typical DSO/dead birdsong and I liked it. Was like if les claypool made an appearance and wanted a harder edge bass. That was probably my highlight.
liquidsmoke
Fantastic show! That Terrapin, whoa! (edit: and Sunrise! Just last week I was thinking about how I'd like to seem them do it!) Met some great people. Didn't need those last couple beers but I was LIVING those songs. Had a mouthful of peanuts and the bag in my hand outside while being patted down before going in right as they were saying no outside food or drink, guy didn't even notice, I was very amused, he'd be a great TSA screener. I won't mention what he missed behind my wallet Despite only living 3 hours away I had never checked out the lakefront near Soldier, very nice and I really enjoyed the cool lake breeze. Took the Metra train in from Harvard and the L up to the Vic, both firsts, not sure why I've never done that, driving into Chicago can be a nightmare. Heard from someone at the Vic that scalpers were giving away (Soldier) tickets as soon as that show started but I'm glad I was seeing DSO 20 feet from me rather than the Dead at 150+ yards. Good seat or bust.
liquidsmoke
Forgot to mention too, that train ride in was Dead all the way. Cumberland stop, 'do not stop on tracks' signs, heard somebody say something about turtles dancing, more I've forgotten at this point. Soldier folks loading in at every stop.
