Forum MVP PoetryGirl Posted June 2, 2015 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 2, 2015 Set closers are to me about bringing you back to the now. Around or sugar mags or nfa or GDTRFB pull you back to reality after getting lost. Well put. Yes, a nice landing is important. Like waking up from a dream, don't do it too early because you'll never get your footing for the day.
Forum MVP Rude Posted June 2, 2015 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 2, 2015 That viola was not a good lander. I stayed scrambled for at least 5 minutes after that assault on my senses.
Forum MVP Tom Banjo Posted June 2, 2015 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 2, 2015 I loved the way that ended that show. Scrambled eggs are good.
Mojo Hand
Love the topic of "throw away". There is an interview out there where Jerry says he always thought it would be interesting to close the second set with a ballad, but Weir insisted on the big rock and roll numbers to end a show. There were some Morning Dew show enders.....but I never saw one. I remember in the nineties, many people actually used the term "throw away" for Throwing Stones / Not Fade Away. I never felt that way. I LOVE Throwing Stones. My brain always said I didn't want to hear NFA.....but my feet always seemed to like it! I definitely felt that Around and Around, Lovelight, and Good Lovin were "throw aways". By the time I started seeing the band in the '88, those songs were played out and never seemed to have any real magic in them. Always loved a good One More Saturday Night. I think the best second set closer was Sugar Magnolia. That never let me down.
Forum MVP Tom Banjo Posted June 2, 2015 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 2, 2015 Good lovin and lovelight were not throwaways when pig was at the helm. Bobby sometimes takes Good lovin there I think in the late 70s. I would probably agree with you by 88 both songs kind of a throwaway outside of the novelty of Bobby doing Pig - that was definitely gone with good lovin. Forum MVP Rude Posted June 2, 2015 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 2, 2015 It depends on your mood and how many shows you see. Getting a good lovin always makes me smile. I'm on cloud 9 at a show and it's such a happy, dancy song. At home, yes, it may be in that category, but besides Johnny b Goode, there's nothing I really don't like live. But as I'm landlocked from live music, every show has that adventure aspect and I'm def not burnt out to the point that I cringe at a song. Forum MVP gr8fulpair Posted June 2, 2015 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 2, 2015 I said it wasn't in that category. I know, I was merely making a statement about GDTRFB even being in a conversation about about throw aways. And poking fun at my boy Rude. Every serious dancer I know loves that song. With MC and Rudedoggg at the top of that list. ✌
Forum MVP Island Bro Posted June 2, 2015 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 2, 2015 There's really nothing to "throw away" unless you choose to throw it away... Just keep dancing and moving through it all
Forum MVP Tom Banjo Posted June 2, 2015 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 2, 2015 Have you read the whole thread. I explained throw away may not be best term. If you got the enegy, of course we all keep oh dancing.
Forum MVP Tom Banjo Posted June 2, 2015 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 2, 2015 Let me maybe put it this way. I've honed in on the show. I know we going to get a Stella followed by NFA Around and Around and US Blues. My lady says its cold. She wants to head to camp or towards the car during drums. I explain that I will absolutely not leave until after the Stella. We need to tough it out. Once NFA hits, I will slowly gather my things and walk slowly towards the car if thats what my lady wants. Maybe try it this way. I know I'm hungry and the line at Disco Pizza will be crazy right after the show. They drop into an Around and Around set closer. I head to Disco Pizza. I accept I am disengaging in the show to beat the line to Pizza. I think these feelings and thoughts are more easily fostered in me because I'm spoiled. I see lots of music. I see probably 50 DSO shows a year plus another 15 to 20 national Dead acts a year with another 10 to 15 local Dead cover bands. I dance quite a bit. If I only got 4 to 5 shows a year, I don't think I would disengage as easily. I definitely have lots to be grateful for and am enjoying the ride. Forum MVP John A Posted June 2, 2015 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 2, 2015 Shoreline was a notorious traffic nightmare post show if you were parked in certain problem areas. But was running late to a show and somehow got herded into the back of the death lot. Knowing this, I left my seat during Around and Around to hit the exit. Not getting to that lot in proper time could result in well over an hour to get to the freeway. However, Garcia was on stage, and there was no leaving before knowing what the encore was going to be. Sure enough it was Baby Blue and I couldn't complete my plan and go through the turnstiles. I did stay as close to the exit as possible until the encore ended then bolted. And rememeber, there were no shortage of poor souls who left the Cap Center 9/3/88 during Saturday Night. Ummm, double encore and electric Ripple tonight, suckers. Forum MVP Tom Banjo Posted June 2, 2015 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 2, 2015 One great thing about the jubilee is you can hear just fine in the disco pizza line. In fact, you can hear just fine at camp. Doesn't mean your engaged but does mean you don't miss hearing any songs.
