It was 10 years ago today ..... the day after an amazing 2 show run at the State in Virginia .... that Scott (founding member of DSO) passed on to glory...

I started seeing DSO in 1999 .. becoming close friends with Scott over the course of the following 6 six years.... along with many of the "old guard" Starheads Scott made us feel like family ... a brother in many ways ....

following DSO was the energy that was needed as they band was formed just a mere 2 years after Jerry passed on .... it gives us a reason to continue to travel and keep on truckin on the road ..... Scott was the driving force behind what is today an amazing band made up of musicians that keep the torch of Jerry, Scott, etc a burning !!

I drove the Teacher Honda Civic in both the summer of 1999 and 2001 across the country, from Ohio to New York City to California, seeing entire DSO tours in places like the Music Farm Charleston SC, Ziggy by the Sea in Atlantic Beach NC (I think 17 people were at that show) ... I keep going all the way to the 4th and B in San Diego, San Fran, and the Irving Plaza in New York City... and so on and so on ....

at one point my total show count was unmatched in regards to the masses traveling state to state to see this band .... the reason being this music and guys like Scott aka the Sandwich Man keep me going !!!

a couple final quick Scott stories to share - the night before he passed after what would be his last show we played poker in one of the hotel rooms all night ... he won a watch and made us all a sandwich ... after a show at the Lincoln in Raleigh when our relationship started to blossom he asked me if I was interested in being the Merch/Roadie person - hell no was my answer I got a great gig - teaching kids and jamming to tunes ! ... and a night on the ORCHESTRA EXPRESS - a trip in which 12 of us rented a Prevost Bus just like the bands and did a 3 show run in  Greensboro, Charletson, and Atlanta .... some of the band members rode on our bus after the show from one city to the next - Scottie proclaimed "this is the best after party ever" ...

RIP SPL

anybody else please share your stories on this thread - keep his memory alive - I could go on and on and on .....

My first DSO show was here in LV at the end of July, 2001. That was an outdoor show at one of our off-Strip casinos. We were lucky, as the high that day was only 104. That same weekend we saw SCI in air conditioned comfort, but I digress.

Once I picked my jaw up from off the ground it was clear that I had to get on a bus, and what a ride it was. I would randomly show up at the damnedest places, dance, and didn't really meet too many people for the next several years. Except for two guys - Cam and Scott. Both of them made me feel not only welcome but a part of something that so many of us thought had fundamentally ended in July '95.

The NYE shows '04 in Denver were special because that is when I started connecting with a few more fans and crew; I will never forget dancing off to the side of the stage in front of Scott and watching him look out over the crowd. He should have patented the expression on his face when he did that. So many of us will always remember that look...

I wasn't at his last shows but nothing was keeping me from his funeral celebration at the Kinetic in Chicago. I won't go into detail now but that night and the next day were formative in my development as a Starhead and as a person.

I thank Scott Larned and each of you for all that you have given to me and more importantly, to this world.

Scott's big smile as he looked over the B3 was always a favorite impression from those shows. I wish someone could post a photo of that image.

Peace, and Love for Scott

Scott was the first band member I met. I was still in the Navy then and made the quick trip for a one nighter. Dewey Beach about 3 hours before the show I was in the parking lot (such that it is) with an Army guy from MD. Scott was out and about and I recognized him immediately and felt kind of star struck. He eased that feeling quickly when he walked over with that smile and chatted for a couple minutes. He was wonderful to watch and listen to at shows. I hope he sees us dancing at shows now and fires a smile to all those fellow angels!

Peace,

Joe

I miss you Brother

I took this picture, the last picture ever taken of such a wonderful friend and person. I first saw DSO at The State Theater in Falls Church, VA, and this is where I last saw Scotty play... I remember that show like it was yesterday cause of a few tunes that I absolutely LOVE!! One helluva Viola Lee, Good Times, and one of my all time favorites that never gets played, Believe It Or Not.. After that last show, Scotty and a bunch of the band came to my hotel room which I was sharing with Teacher Matt and our friend Haylee, and we played poker until 7am that morning... Scotty had been complaining about his back hurting and how the last few nights he felt like total shit. None of us took notice really, something I'll have to live with my whole life.. what If I made him go to the hospital, what if, what if, ect... Anyway, Scotty took ALOT of our money that night.. The then road manager and good friend Robbie Williams came back to the poker game around 430am, and he said he passed Scotty in the hallway, and Scotty just laughed and told him to get back to the game, cause "we were just giving money away"... lol..  The poker game wrapped up around 7am, and I went and got a few hours of sleep before checking out and driving back to Baltimore... I checked out, drove home and passed out hard... Nick Tiano called me around 7pm that night crying and it took me a few minutes to actually understand what he was saying that Scotty had a heart attack... I asked if he was ok, and Nick bawling just told me he didn't make it... I dropped the phone and started bawling myself.. After an hour or so, I pulled myself together enough to call Teacher Matt and tell him the news... I also had to call our friend Haylee who was living in North Carolina, and she stiill didn't make it home... haylee and Scott were really close friends, and I had to tell her to pull of the side of the road.. once she did, I told her the news and we wound up comforting each other for about 4 hours on the phone, she was still parked on the side of the road...

That was my worst Scott Larned story.. I have so many great Scott stories, it would take me HOURS apon HOURS to reall them all... All I can say is that he was a great person, and without him, I would of never met many people who I now call my family... Scott always found us "old schooler DSO fans" in the crowd and made it a point to come talk to us.. I miss that man on a daily basis, and I have his picture hung up on my wall, right next to Scott's picture of Brent Midland... I got Scotty's Brent photo when we held an auction in Chicago to raise money for his daughter..

I miss my friend, and I miss hearing him sing in his uncanny brent voice... Godspeed Scotty, you will never be forgoten!!!
