What a fun night!  This was delicious from start to finish.  Bird Song was a revelation.

Usually when a band is as tight as, say, The Dead (or DSO), a guest musician is going to weight on the cohesive nature of the show. Not so tonight with Barry Sless.  He never got in the way of anything that was happening, and his sound always elevated the mix, and he had many tasteful solos.

Here is what happened, with my parenthetic running commentary…

Set I:

Ripple
Big Iron
Run For the Roses
Operator (Lisa harmonica)
Pride of Cucamonga (gnarly cool jam)
Silver Threads & Golden Needles
Jack-A-Roe (Barry Sless very sweet jam)
Dark Hallow
Chimes of Freedom (beautiful crescendo)
Dire Wolf
Black-Throated Wind (Eaton other worldly)
To Lay Me Down (just gorgeous)
Monkey & The Engineer
Swing Low Sweet Chariot

Set II:

Dupree's Diamond Blues
Mountains of the Moon (deep and haunting)
Race Is On
Okie From Muskogee
Unbroken Chain (huge - how is this level of intensity possible in an acoustic arrangement?) ->
Weather Report Prelude (so beautiful with Barry Sless) ->
Let It Grow ->
Simple Twist Of Fate (show stopper - and causes Mattson to stand briefly for first and only time in the show!) ->
Throwing Stones -> (debatable arrow - they kinda paused)
Bird Song (extreme Mattson intensity and somehow a total surprise exploding out of Throwing - just insane) ->
Midnight Moonlight

encores:

Lindy (Lisa kazoo)
Tell it to Me
