U guys that Iko is still stuck in my heart.... And hips.... And ears! Seriously sickest sounds in an Iko ever.... And on that bouncy floor, oh boy!!! Lisa was groovin so hard whole show, Skip gave us his sexy box again mmmm and the drummers kinda made the dancers lose it in the best way and the boys read my mail so they could play me my hand picked perfect set....

There were some pretty jingling gypsies dancing through a windchime house at the end of space.... Wait.... that was Rob B playing keys..... Box til the morning comes!?!? Mmmm!

First set: "let's play how the Dead played on cocaine, tonight!!!" And whoa.... So searing and fast and rocking n tight.... Sooo great! Prudence got me to spite my nose offa my face for sure and the big ol heart is still just dancing in my eyes.... Was so cool to get that Days Between I had been hearing since bf eyes the other night in boulder! Whole place was in blessed land with those days between- everyone had hands to heart or praying or in the air sending and receiving the most beautiful sounds of what we may never know but sure can feel! Mr Charlie was so rocking and Lucy was soooo loose and sexy! Someone get those 2 together, already!!!!!

Stephen had me feeling so weird by the end in the STRANGEST way then when stranger hit I was all, "ohhhhhh!" And dances it out really awesomely! Um... Then foolish heart!?! Yaaaaay! They really spaced us out into neverland for lost sailor and the sense of uncertain future adeventures and having no idea what is happening next but being totally comfortable and cozy w that lack of hope or fear got to be really intensely vibrant and today I feel more awake and ready to go for it for sure than I have in my whole life- and I hardly slept! Watchtower sealed the mission and the epic sound of the show and made me recognize that we all did it right tonight. The whole wheel spinning thing, check!!!!

But all I really needed is what u needed, too! GOOD LOVE! Got to have lovin!!!!

Loved Dear Prudence and Peggy-O to keep some softness in the ballroom

Mr Charlie super fun Barracco kickin it down and putting it out

Ā

St Stephen highlight for sure...luscious jamming...felt '76 style to me

Foolish Heart welcome flow and Jeff delicacy

Ā

As a whole I dug all tunes in first set but found it a bit clunky overall as a set which is sometimes all part of the original experiment. But the 2nd set seemed to have it's natural flow and everything coming along just when you needed it.Ā

Powerful Days Between (i think my first one w/dso) and release into Good Lovin' blissfest

Good vibes in Oregon...thankful to be here

Awesome vibe in P-town. Ballroom was bouncing for the duration and the band was smokin. Nice original show. GD show tonight?? Thanks to whoever found my hat and left it on the handrail for me to find 2hrs. later.

What a rocking fun good time! Ā First time at the crystal ballroom and could only make the first showā€¦..next time I'll plan it better.

A weird funky place but really fun and I had forgotten just how good this band is. Ā I haven't danced or been spun up, down, and sideways like that in a long long time. Ā What a treat to hear tunes like Till the Morning Comes, Mister Charlie, Stranger, Lost Sailor, Iko, Days Betweenā€¦ā€¦.drums/space was out thereā€¦..many high points in this show and looking forward to the next time.

Ā

Takes all you got just to stay on the beat.

Is that Lucy In The Sky or Loose Lucy? My guess is Loose Lucy, but if it isn't then the WHOA factor just went way up. It would be one helluva suprise slot for Lucy In The Sky that's for sure. LL there- no thanks. Prolly never happened so I don't even know why I'm asking. I never liked Loose Lucy to begin with, it's a bathroom song for me.

I may run the risk of spoiling the fun by letting the cat out of the bag, but the Crystal Ballroom on a Thursday night never seems to disappoint. The dancer's occupy the back space of the ballroom floor on the non drink side. The Ballroom, thankfully in my opinion, segregates the drinking. Thus, no booze permeating the dance area. The place doesn't sell out (Friday is a different story) and we all dance together instead of competing for precious space in an over sold venue. The place fills with dancer's. This isn't an East Coast dance party after all. The music and crowd create a synergy that pushes one's joy and emotion into the otherworld. The energy is contagious and a deadhead dancer can't help but feel at home in Portland. Some of my closest brothers and sisters live in that town and many others make the trip to share in this communion.

The Box > Till the Morning Comes set the Ballroom into a whirling twirling fury. A true tornado of dance had begun. I'm not saying its the first time, but its nice to get through Box without being overcome with emotion. I still miss him every day but certainly feel better smiling in his memory than I do fighting the tears trying to maintain the facade that everything is okay. Tonight surrounded by friends and loved ones everything is better than okay. I feel loved. Bucket just spins the energy higher. Smiles and laughter all around. I found the Dear Prudence to break the set flow a little. I'm not huge on the Beatles and haven't been overly moved by Dear Prudence, one in Philadelphia years back being the exception. I think overall the 1st set was a little choppy, but that certainly didn't stop the dancer's from basking in the glory of song and taking it in all. Esau is always fun to dance to with a bunch of dancers. The pace allows us to groove together and somewhat in control. I love the backbeat groove. Peggy-O always beautiful and majestic. Jeff truly weaves the soldier's story. Baracco delivers Mr. Charlie with playful exuberance and the crowd responds with some very playful dancing and prancing. I can't get enough of the Pig stuff. Eaton follows with a very strong Memphis Blues and the band closes with a strong dance sequence in Loose Lucy and Let it Grow. Lucy provides a more stable and controlled dance vehicle and then Let it Grow spirals you out into the ethos as you struggle to remain present in the eye of the dance storm.

Set break at the Crystal is never a bad time. The venue allows reentry and although they will yell at you if you light up to close to the venue, turn left and walk up the hill to the hippy puffathon. More smiles and more laughter as you catch up with your long lost brothers. It's amazing how close I feel to people I see only a handful times a year, but these are some of the people, I can truly be myself around. After 3 or 4 joints, we head back inside to get situated for 2nd set. I'm glad you found your stuff helpslip, but it was still funnier when your "shit was gone."

The 2nd set starts off smoking. St. Stephen surrounded by the people who know what it means to have the people all complain. Hippies just aren't treated kindly everywhere. Stranger was silky sultry and hot. I left the show and missed the next 3 songs. Jen wasn't feeling well and I had to help her get a cab back to the hotel. Following drums > space, it's apparent the energy didn't dip at all while I was gone and the band gets us prancing and leaping to Iko. I feel some people must have left at drums space because the space, good from the start, seems to get better at this point. Watchtower is out of control as we whirl in and out of each other's space. Clearly, some of us are in a pretty magical place at this point and I'm not sure we really want to find our way out of here, but we certainly danced like we were looking for the way. Days Between was powerful stuff. Just listen to your favorite version and soak in the emotion. My words won't do it any justice. The last great Hunter/Garcia ballad. Good Lovin breaks you out of the Days trance and you can feel the love all around. Lots and lots of love all over this night. They encore with Might as Well.

This 1st night in Portland was truly special. It certainly wasn't my favorite show. Not even close musically, but the synergy between band and the crowd could not be denied. We went to a special place together and shared in each other's love and warmth. I'm so grateful that I get to share in nights like this. I know that it is part of the reason I keep coming back. Thank you DSO, band and crew, for bringing so many of my loved one's together. We are truly blessed for this opportunity. Portland, I miss you already.
