Forum MVP PoetryGirl Posted November 26, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted November 26, 2014 Telecaster, stratocaster or American standard stratocaster? Which do I get for my son's Christmas present? He has a Les Paul but wants the twangy sound.

Forum MVP found Posted November 26, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted November 26, 2014 Funny, I don't think les Paul's are twangy at all. Could be the strings, the amp, the pick ups, etc. I'd start there rather than a new guitar. There's so many different ways to change the sound. I think strats and teles, and fenders in general, are more twangy. Strats I guess have a little more bluesy sound. I play a strat body with an ibanez neck ad custom pick ups. My back up is an SG. For what it's worth, Jerry played an SG early on in his career. Good luck though, you're gonna need it.

His Les Paul he uses for jazz band and loves to play Green Day. It is NOT twangy so he wants a strat. He likes Red hot chili peppers, Pink Floyd etc and wants that sound too. I guess there could be worse hobbies. I gladly feed his Lego love as it limits xBox. Anything but video games....

Forum MVP PoetryGirl Posted November 26, 2014 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted November 26, 2014 The idea of all the ways to modify sound makes my Libra self quiver... maybe we'll start with an overdrive pedal. Lol
Forum MVP found Posted November 26, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted November 26, 2014 I'm such a dope. I've always preferred strats to teles. Make sure you buy American. Shoot me a message if you want some more ideas. I'd need a little more info on exactly what he wants.

Forum MVP PoetryGirl Posted November 26, 2014 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted November 26, 2014 Is that an SG Jerry plays on 7/13/76 in St Stphen? What does Bobby typically play? PS nothing wrong with setting my boy up for a successful GD play for his dear Mom.
Forum MVP found Posted November 26, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted November 26, 2014 Bobby usually plays ibanez I believe. At least that's who makes his custom guitar. He also played some strats I believe, as did Jerry. I've only seen the sound check from the night before at the Orpheum theatre in 76. He is not playing an SG. He was using an SG around 69 I think. I believe on Live Dead, he's playing the SG. Same guitar angus young uses.
Forum MVP found Posted November 26, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted November 26, 2014 Jerry uses a 57 strat in 72. "Alligator." The guitar he uses in 76 is a Travis bean I think. He also used the Doug Irwin "wolf" in 73, 74, 77, and 78.

Forum MVP cm_hayden Posted November 26, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted November 26, 2014 I have a few questions. How old is too old to begin musical training? Are my fingers too old to begin learning how to play guitar? I'm asking before I begin the cost of buying and training.
tumbledownshack
Never too old. I used to teach guitar 5 days a week and I had students from 7-65 There are many guitar players playing very well these days in there 70's and sometimes 80's. Forum MVP PoetryGirl Posted November 30, 2014 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted November 30, 2014 Thanks for the help. He prioritized for some Ibanez pedals instead and a Martin travel guitar. I see what you mean with the good luck. Lol Sorry for my redundant tendencies of late. My place currently has some patchy reception. We definitely have a tasty carrot to dangle as a result of this thread!
