Advisory Board Dr. Barry Posted November 11, 2014 Advisory Board Report Share Posted November 11, 2014 Now get back truckin' on! Congrats. I would probably have never really listened again had I not been turned on to DSO way back when in 2001... Dr. B
Forum MVP Tom Banjo Posted November 11, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted November 11, 2014 I probably would have never listened. I was very much a "festy" kid when I found Dark Star. I was into music and knew of the Dead. I listened to a Greatest Hits album. I saw the Dead in 2004 and they didn't really do it for me. I was definitely more into the party then I was the music. Then I saw DSO and they changed my life. They truly introduced me to this wonderful canvas of history, art, and music that Jerry and Hunter along with the rest of the gang created. I also found a sense of community. With time, my interest in the party wained, although my friends will tell you I still like to have a good time, but I became a true student of the history and culture of the Grateful Dead. This music changed my life and without Dark Star, I'm not sure I would have found it. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. See ya in Wallingford. Forum MVP Mango Posted November 11, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted November 11, 2014 I can relate to what Rick said in some ways. DSO taught me to love all the songs I didn't want to. Gave me the experience of dancing to the music, without which the music is worth much less to me. Recreating the magic.... Love you more than words can tell. But we try anyway....because we are humans and words are our communication. I can always feel the love coming from the stage~
Forum MVP Rude Posted November 11, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted November 11, 2014 DSO rekindled my love of GD. Listened to a lot of GD in the 90s after seeing a few GD shows but life took hold and the music faded. I still listened to a few Dicks picks and other commercial releases in the car, but when I saw a rag in Chicago in 2011 advertising a band continuing the grateful dead experience, I was like I need to see this. Caught my 1st show at a way over packed Vic theater in winter 2011. That was my only show that year, but it rekindled a spark and I wanted to learn more about those guys and the dead. At my 2nd show in St Louis in 2012 I met Rob B after the show at the Moonlight. I told him I'm so glad they didn't play a Donna Jean Band show. I was such a noob, I thought that DSO played all the setlists on their page and didn't realize those were side projects lol. After that show it was on. Caught another plus that 1st Jubilee. I was hooked. Nothing could make me feel the way I did at a DSO show. The next project was creating more dead heads in my area. I needed travel companions. I think so far I've taken 8 1st timers to DSO shows. That will soon be 9 over New Years Run. Thank you guys for great times and can't wait to see you soon!!!! Forum MVP Dead duck Posted November 11, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted November 11, 2014 I turned my little cousin on to the dead back in the day. Bought him a space your face tshirt to use as his concert shirt. oddly enough his first concert was spice girls and he was 7 or 8 yrs old. Took him to see Phil when he was 13 or so. Kind of disconnected while I was kid raisin and not seeing many if any shows anymore. Reconnected after marriage was over and started running into him again. Did me a huge solid by turning me onto DSO. I'll admit I had a snob mentality and went in with low expectations. Mind blown. The rest is history. I take my boys to any show that is appropriate. Otherwise little cuz is travel parter of choice. Biggest regret is joining the party too late to enjoy DSO at the ledges. Happy anniversary guys and gal. Forum MVP gr8fulpair Posted November 12, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted November 12, 2014 I've loved every road trip, every parking lot, every pat down, every over priced beer cause it all lead to a DSO show, and I loved every note! Forum MVP Tea Posted November 12, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted November 12, 2014 Words/Phrases I've used to describe my DSO experience: The Quickening, the singularity, event horizon, absurd carnival, planetary alignment, roller coaster, The Vibe, launch pad, zone, groove, helpless bliss, next level. There are a few others but they escape me at the moment. These were similar descriptors of the energy that surrounded the GD. I sacrificed everything to get to the next show and my life proceeded by its own design. Then I thought it was gone forever until the Dunegrass festival in August of 2007. There are few things in this life that have shocked me more than the first 5 minutes of that show. In many ways I never really picked my jaw back off of the floor. Here's to many more years of the the ultimate channelling, the organic creation of an energy that cannot be restrained, denied, or destroyed. DSO are the only ones who do what they do. ....and after 17 years.....they play for life

Forum MVP Island Bro Posted November 12, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted November 12, 2014 Thanks to DSO, I feel like we are all getting to witness and experience a phenomenal Renaissance period for GD music. I never would have dreamed the music could be so damn good so many years after Jerry's passing. Like the rest of y'all, I am filled with gratitude. franknkeene
My post 1995 story. One of the Knickerbocker shows in March 1991 was my last. I must say, I went out on a good note. I thought it was over from there because mostly I had other interests. My next show was The Dead in 2003 and I must say I *really* enjoyed those shows (Willie Nelson some shows and Steve Winwood some others). I thought the line up was magnificent. For me at the time, it was a fine way to mourn Jerry having a female voice singing some Jerry ballads. Joan did a wonderful job with China Doll and she was overally erotic moving to Mr Charlie across the stage. Then my niece in Austin Texas graduated from high school the same week as Willie Nelsons Family Picnic. That was a great show for The Dead on that tour! The 2003 line up was the core 4, Jeff C, Rob B, Jimmy Herring, and Joan Osborne. Did not enjoy the next line ups and I was basically done. Meanwhile, rewind a little, on the morning of Oct 16, 1999 while walking on Main St, I looked up and saw “Dark Star Orchestra” on the marque of the Colonial Theatre in Keene. I recalled being “wowed”, a GD cover band in a theatre and not in a bar. As I considered going, this is where things get funny. Now, that weekend, my wife’s best friend was visiting from CT. They both had babies back at the house as they enjoyed each others company for the few day. When I got home and was just about to tell Amy what I saw, she beat me to it and asked me to go to the grocery store. I told her I was thinking of going to see this band at the Colonial. Story gets funnier; she says: oh okay, we can survive without what I was asking you to go to the store. My response was, “you know, I was planning on going to bed early tonight anyway so I think I'll get you what you want at the Grocery Store. While DSO was playing downtown (pre Rob Eaton), I was buying apple sauce, eggs, and milk about a mile down the road. ha...can you believe it? On-going irony and laughter for me. A few years later, on 4/11/2001, I saw an advertisement for DSO in the Keene Sentinel. They were coming back and it was quite the colorful ad in the newspaper. This time I was determined to go. The first song, Promised Land, a woman harmonizing and dancing on stage, “Wow, THAT WAS PRETTY GOOD!”. I remember my exact thoughts from the time. The next song was Miss ½ step. Somewhere along the Rio Grande-e-o, along the might river, came the consummate jaw drop. …..and the rest is history, by the end of the night (nay, the end of Miss 1/2 step) I was hooked. I've been meaning to tell this story for a long time now. Happy anniversary DSO and a ton thanks!

Forum MVP John A Posted November 13, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted November 13, 2014 Joan did a wonderful job with China Doll After a bad bout with a Phil & Friends Summer '99 Warfield show (same old tired shit, he sang a bunch of Garcia/Hunter, blah blah blah) I saw more or less nothing pre-Furthur from the core 4. But I saw a video of that '03 Joan O China Doll and agree it was wonderful.
