Advisory Board Dr. Barry Posted October 17, 2014 Advisory Board Report Share Posted October 17, 2014 So great to see Bob again. Looking good and clearly acting the leader in that vocal trio. I've said it before and it bears repeating. Stop what you are doing and listen to 4/8/71. Boston Music Hall. I have never heard a recording like this before. Not only a perfect soundboard of a classic show in an amazing run of an incredible year, but the recording has stereo separation. Bob is on the left, Jerry on the right. Phil is playing lead bass throughout. Listen to his intro to Good Love for example. I defy you to listen to Bobby's guitar work and not come away with a new conception of his role in the mix. Listen to Chinacat. It is remarkable how Bobby plays a "rhythm lead" and Jerry plays a "lead rhythm" so seamlessly in so many songs. It was hard for me at times to tell who was playing when and what. Also noteworthy is how Jerry would "defer" to Bobby in so many songs and "let" him shine as the lead guitar. So tasteful. Listen to this recording. Comment on it after a full listen with headphones or a place where you can appreciate the stereo separation. And PLEASE if you know of any other recordings from any era that feature stereo separation like this let it be known. Dr. B
