You know mango. For GD show experience, I find both Colorado and Cali over rated. Best dance experiences I've had lately were at the Capitol and a Sunday at Rams Head. Less dancers but way more space. Cali has a great group of dancers but at most of the clubs DSO plays in Cali the needed space for all those people to dance has been absent. I will try Hollywood and hope for a different experience.

I think the regency will be a rager. Terrapin...meh. My recent experience with the crowds in colorado(excluding Dillon) was a bunch of talking drunks. Shows may be crowded here but people are for the most part respectful. I often have the most fun in foreign places....like Ponte Vedra this year. You never know when the dance party is going to erupt.

I thought crowd in Denver was awesome where I was. All respectful dancers. I expected state bridge to be a shit show so I hung to the back. Also mostly respectful show goers. My experiences in LA, Anaheim, San Rafael, and Solano suggest to me that the California crowd has pockets of drunks and respectful show goers. More importantly a large group of dancers that create a group large enough to avoid intermingling with the drunks possible on most nights. Just my observations. Everyone's experience is different.

I see every night as a unique experience. Sometimes I'll go to a venue that I don['t like, with low expectations, and then be blown away. Other times I go to what I consider a favorite venue and have a weird experience. So many factors involved....

Yes, those places you listed are some of my least favorite spots in California. Bay Area shows can be crowded but have a high potential. Dark Star shows in particular are extra packed in this area. Where is the next size up venues? Fox Theatre Oakland? Eager to see what the Regency is about, I've heard mixed reviews. The Grass Valley venue looks cool, provided they pull those fold up chairs out. Can't imagine that they will be there. I'm bummed that aren't doing Oregon this time, I always prefer to go up there over down south.

I hear the Fonda is spacious and good. Perhaps a trip to Vegas>LA is in order.

The Ram's Head that Sunday really did have some great space to dance. The two Cap shows prior to that were definitely more crowded, but for being nyc area shows, the crowd really got down to some DSO on both nights, more so than I expected. It really made me happy to see. You can really make a tighter space work so long as everyone is dancing, It also makes the show infinitely more fun!

I think the Regency is a shit hole, at least by San Francisco standards.  The stage is way too long, so the band stands further back.  Sound is ok at best. There is a balcony that was never opened in the shows I went to there, which I found weird.  Security, and again we're talking San Francisco standards, is awful.  The best part is the trippy lounge downstairs between sets.  Anytime you read "best...between sets" that's not a good sign.  When you have The Fillmore, not to mention GAMH, in the mix, this joint just doesn't pass muster.

Now, all that said, I saw a '69 recreation there (if not the first one of the firsts) that was mind blowing.

I'm a quiet drunk that likes to dance, so I prefer a venue with space, good sight lines when waiting for a beverage, nice big restrooms that can be gotten in and out of in 2 minutes or less and most importantly good sound. Springfield and the Jubilee come to mind.
