JacksonPollockDancer
09-16-78 Gizah Sound and Light Theater, Cairo, Egypt (Sat) 1: Bertha> Good Lovin, Candyman, L. L. Rain, Row Jimmy, El Paso, Ramble On, Minglewood, Deal 2: Ollin Arageed*> Fire> Iko Iko, Miracle> All Over Now, Sunrise, Shakedown> Drumz> Truckin> Stella Blue> Around E: Saturday Night Filler: White Rabbit Amazing, almost too much fun. The band was really enjoying playing this one too, from Lisa and Rob B's world class clapping during Ollin Arageed, to Eaton directing traffic with the maracas during drumz, just a good night. Forum MVP found Posted May 31, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 31, 2014 I thought last night was very very excellent. Super strong show from start to finish. Big dancing show. Bertha good lovin was on point. LLR was killer. Ramble on was the singalong of the night and very fun. Minglewood Solid contributions from all including a pretty jazzy solo from Rob B. Loved the start of the second set. Very fun and fresh to my ears. I think that was point when people caught on that it was an Egypt show. The whole second set pretty much crushed it with an exceptional white rabbit to cap it all off Another one of those nights where everything clicked for the audience and band. LOVE penns peak. Terrapin_Sedation
The second set opening was a big clue, I had it narrowed down to 77-78 before that but there was no mistaking the Ollin Arageed. That show was released as Roadtrip IV: Rocking the Cradle on CD/DVD a few years back and is worth a listen/watch. Probably worth it for liner notes alone. This is interesting run down of the release http://www.thebestofwebsite.com/Bands/Grateful_Dead/Reviews/Rocking%20The%20Cradle_Egypt1978.htm Last night they did that historic show more than justice. What really impressed me was the level they took songs like Ramble on Rose, All over Now, Minglewood. As good as those tunes are, I don't think they make many people's top ten list. If this were baseball, those songs would be utility-players. But the band just rocked them to the max. as they did with E-V-E-R-Y note they played. sonomajon
The slide guitar from Eaton on Candyman got me to 78...Similar to 4-22-78...everything I heard from the first set was really good! The ROR was big...Band is crushing it for sure. Have fun east coasters. After the winter you endured y'all deserve it!
Forum MVP found Posted May 31, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 31, 2014 Rob B did a Tom Waits impression right before the filler if I remember correctly. It was a good for a chuckle.
Weather Command
Not sure if anyone mentioned above but the FIRST time DSO did this show, amazingly enough!! I think? GRATE show...
brightEyes
Key Question for Band Members a/o Audience members that were paying close attention: During the segue into the outro of Shakedown Street, --did it stay true to the original performance by just 'vamping' on the D minor for a good long time before moving off into the more exploratory realms ? Or did they hold to the more typical Shakedown postjam and go into the C7 bluesy space ? On 9/16/78, the GD never went into a bluesy C Jam at the end, rather they just stuck on that hauntingly cryptic D Minor and rode it off into the Egyptian Sky, before going into a d Dorian type of modal space for a bit, and then finally settling into a Tasty Drums. One of the highlights of the show imo, and a very rare, spacy and special Shakedown Street.

Forum MVP found Posted June 2, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 2, 2014 I wasn't looking at the band so I can't say with the utmost certainty what chords they were playing but this was a very spacey shakedown. Not your typical funkathon, so I would say they were faithful to the original performance.
Forum MVP Mango Posted June 2, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 2, 2014 There was definitely something distinctly different about the jam....sounded like it was in a different key. I thought it was very cool, less funky but more exploratory. This whole show I thought to be very unique sounding and generally awesome. I hate missing Penn's Peak shows!!! Hoping to make it for the annual thanksgiving show...
Forum MVP nwnj steve Posted June 3, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 3, 2014 Rob Koritz was playing the tar while lisa and rob barraco were doing the clapping very much the same to the the original show .it was a very difficult beat to try to follow ,Lisa had told me they practiced it in the afternoon and it was hard to pick up on and rob was leading her on the stage, the jam that followed prior to fire was so blissful and jeff nailed it .this was a true danceathon type second set ,best show I ve seen in a long time. Mango ,it was a pure joy to finally meet your mom.what a lovely lady
