And the lighting was absolutely fantastic!!!

What an incredible opener for DSO at the wonderful fest. Gorgeous day and night, and everyone had a real good time. The band was impeccable and jamming way out there. Nicky Sanders is super talented. What a great time!! Now on my way over to check out Mattson/Barraco at noon. Had to get up early!!

After seeing a bunch of Dead shows in the early 80's a few have burned in my memory as being just a cut above, Saratoga Springs, Brendan Burne "Love the One You're With" show, and a Merriweather Casey Jones opener. Now I can add Jubilee 2014 first night to that list! Absolutely the best!

Peace,

Joe

What a fantastic weekend! From the shows I've seen the last few years, l must say DSO does it best. Too bad we left a day early, just couldn't handle waking in OH on monday and going to work 5 hrs away on Tuesday, oh well. Definitly doing Jam in the Sand!

Phew! Yesterday was a tough day, as to be expected. Today was as tough, maybe tougher. I think tomorrow will start an upward trend. At the moment though I feel great. Sitting in my living room, sipping some tea and listening to night 1 of the Jubilee on phoncert.com/listen. It's taking me right back....sound is great, but I love how the space between tracks is still there(banter and all). I'll probably say this more than once throughout my reviews but I think that a lot of people are catching on to DSO, big time. With rumors of "the Dead" touring in 2015 i'm sure there are some doubts about what will transpire. I personally am not worried about it, I the think power with which this band is playing right now will appeal to a certain crowd. The ears that need to hear it will be there. And maybe a mix up of the usual tour schedule....

Box of Rain, while not everyone's favorite and not particularly danceable, was a warm and heartfelt way to open the show. Very sweet, indeed, but the party got started in earnest with Till the Morning Comes, a song whose glory I didn't realize until I saw DSO break it out a couple of years ago. Wow! What a fun tune to dance to. "The shape it takes could be yours to choose, what you may win what you may lose". BTW>BRRB were both played well, very Strong. Pretty much everything was played brilliantly so it might get rather redundant here. Cassidy was a real blast off with a nice long jam and triumphant return, getting spacey for just long enough to almost lose some listeners before making it's glorious return. "flight of the sea birds, scattered like lost words, wheel to the storm and fly." Now that Mission---and now I've got up to my listening-- was really something extra special. Clocking in at 14 minutes, this version soared high and low. While the vocals were delivered gracefully, Jeff really felt out every corner of this song with his guitar playing. "There's some satisfaction in the San Francisco rain, no matter what comes down the mission always looks the same." I experience this song, especially the end jam, as a triumph over struggle. This may be an abstraction, and the lyrics certainly show some sorrow, but it is my personal interpretation of the song makes me feel. Struggle is omnipresent. Still, though, we rise above and find joy and that, to me, is the prevailing story of life. I suppose it's all matter of perspective...you just have to look at right ;) Think the cowboy songs sound wonderful with Nicky Sanders, his fiddle playing melding well on this type of song, though perhaps better communication on who is soloing when would help. Sugaree was strong. "I'll meet you at the jubilee". Well, here we are! Loving Barraco’s solo here, the slow build and rhythmic undulations. And then Jeff snuck PERFECTLY back in there, one instrument melting into the other. Jeff just rips the shit out of this solo, ahhh glory. Gimme some Lovin is not my favorite. It’s normal location in the 2nd set normally indicates a generic, rockin’ 80s finish. I guess it’s not so much that I don’t like the song but more what I associate with it. I try to avoid experiencing the music this way as I see it’s huge limitations. Every song has the potential to blow your mind in any moment and you’d best stay ready and keep yourself open to the possibility. “temperatures rising, everybody’s getting high” Indeed, with or without drugs! And man this Might as Well is sweltering, a booming end to a pretty good set. I’ll give it a B…everything well played but quickly overshadowed by the rest of the weekend.

Sounds like they are tuning to “all around this world” before the start of the first set. The tune quickly changes though to a darker, stranger tone. Pun intended.  We like get strange, weird and wacky. This song is so mischievous….slinky but groovy.  “and doesn’t it feel, about like running a red light? Aint’t no pointing in looking behind us, no…” The band that would follow DSO on this night, Devil Makes Three, has a song that goes “if you’re gonna do wrong you’d better do wrong right”. Ha, something like that. “silky, silky, crazy, crazy night. I love when the Brent synth sounds are broken out. This song, as well as early 80s versions of Alabama Getaway, feature it.  Wow…smokin.  Cumberland….here we go. This song is a freakin frenzied workout and I’m not always ready for it. Basically, it’d better be worth it. This one was! Love Skip’s vocals….so strong, so reminiscent of Mr. Lesh ala 1972.  Sailor>Saint was cooked to perfection. The drummers just sound SO on,  cleverly accentuating every nook and cranny. Out of the chaotic debris of Saint came Eyes of the World. I did not expect it and was extra thrilled. I mean, I’m always thrilled when Eyes starts….it’s like a wave of relief for me because I’m always waiting for it. It’s the first song that really got me. And seriously, who doesn’t like Eyes? Step forward now, if you dare. Just kidding ;) This song is definitely one of Jeff’s cornerstones. “wings a mile long will carry the bird away”. I love to float away with this song, spinning in glory. Does it get any better?  “sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own” Nice little bass solo at the end there and I hear Barraco teasing the last part of the meltdown jam(73-74), albeit in a different key, before the Drumz took over.

A fairly mellow and electronicish drumz led to an utterly bizarre space, with Lisa reading lines from “alice in wonderland”. I did not realize this though and thought she was just making shit up. Cool shit, found me rolling around on the ground. Fortunately we had the Rugs! Ahh the rugs….270$ spent on three between me and two other friends but the investment is long term and our friend is bringing them back next year. Jabberwok! I can hear Barraco using some sounds that he was getting ready before Cumberland started. This was some truly trippy shit- believe me!

I liked the Mr. Fantasy, a good choice to pull the crowd out of the spaciness that for some is probably boring (not me). Going into the Other One was unexpected but highly appreciated. The break down and build up jam leading to the second verse was really something, and they segued perfectly into Morning Dew. Dew Climaxed perfectly.

Some pretty good dancing went down on this night, but it would only get better.  The next two nights would have us moving the rugs over to the left side where the ground was flatter and the scene was better. All in all a fantastic way to start it off.

  • 2 weeks later...

....quite frankly, the other one > morning dew was the highlight for the entire weekend and all shows were strong. The tale end of the other one, right before the dew was a top ten moment in my 13 years of following DSO...just plain sick! Skip is soooooooo good it is hard to really comprehend....thanks DSO for being you...
