Forum MVP Island Bro Posted April 21, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted April 21, 2014 Old school Beauty!! I had so much fun at this gig. First off I'd like to say that I really felt how hard the whole band was working their asses off tonight. Clearly, there was a LOT of effort put into creating and delivering this show and that was REALLY apparent. So much old school jamming all over the place...just absolutely cranking. Lisa sang for much and holy shit her Hurts Me Too went to the core and man did the crowd give it back to her when she was done... Forum MVP Supplicated Velvet Thunder Posted April 21, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted April 21, 2014 well well well. best show ever? probably. looks like it. i wouldn't know. alligator>WRS? to close first set? I am crying a little atm knowing that we missed our anniversary show. Rob's good morning little school girl? every song I talked about needing the WHOLE TOUR and the MONTH BEFORE we left? sigh. I won't even mention the rest of what I feel like I missed…… (not that I wasn't properly warned! lol) thanks for NOT doing a jeff masterpiece BUT, if we had stayed, our car would have broken down in Seattle and we would have been quite stranded on the west coast (and in an area where we don't really know anyone!) just before Eugene we had a series of revelations that we didn't need to write down to realize it was time to BIODTL. big ideas but the cash was all spent. packed our bags, left without saying goodbye (cause it's really just "see you next show") and rolled out of Eugene around 4pm with the dream of flying through the night and arriving in Boulder before rush hour to celebrate the holiday properly! this was the most epic 5 week journey of my life. from the three weeks in Malibu to the 2+ weeks with all of our friends on tour, we have come home to patch our bones, knowing when we get back truckin on come the 4th of July weekend shows in CO. knowing so many of you that made this tour great will be there makes my heart so happy!!! we are more in love with the the world every day as we see the practice of lifting the veil of suffering to reveal the truth that we are all the eyes of the world and that this world is just where we want to be. lovers come and go, but its most fun when my friends, they come around!!!! I am eager to head off to the retreat center with Gabe and learn more about buddhism for the summer, because next time you see me, things won't be the same they sure weren't this time! well, off to find a place that will pay us more than $200 to scrap the suburu and figure out just how we will get down to the retreat center. oh yeah, gotta move outta the old house this week, too….. ah, the wheel is turning and we can't slow it down! mama, mama, many worlds I've come since I first left home

Forum MVP Island Bro Posted April 22, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted April 22, 2014 One of those shows I want to document as best I can...(this would be one you will want to download and add to your collection) First off: last year's Seattle 4/20 show was on a Saturday and was just jam packed and oversold, etc but this year it was on a Sunday which just changes everything...I love the vibe of a Sunday show after hitting it hard all weekend...more relaxed flavor. So there was actually very sufficient dance space for about 87.43% of the show which is not always true at this venue. And completely chill security...no frisky frisky on entry at all and no issues inside or even notice of security workers much at all. Bottom line: the showbox can be a kickass experience (in terms of dance space, etc) on week nights vs weekends. A very different energy for sure. Also I think the sound kicks ass in this venue and I've seen to many hot dso shows here. I wasn't sure how this show was gonna go for me since I got nailed with some food poisoning after the Eugene show (thank the good lord it didn't hit til after the show was over!!) which made for very minimal sleep and compromised body system...achy all day on 4/20 and extremely low energy, like I had the flu or something. So I was prepared to even just sit and watch and listen for this one--not knowing if my energy would make it back. Hell, even getting out of the car and walking a couple blocks to the venue took very significant effort so it would be what it would be. Then the darnedest thing happened: shortly after entering the venue I felt my energy begin to return somewhat, and then when they came on stage and busted Til the Morning Comes I was ready to roll and found myself dancing at essentially full capacity right out of the gate and all the way through with just a couple very minor and brief slumps (which is to be expected anyway on night 3 in a row). Damn this music HEALS!!! Same thing happened to pdxhead in portland: he suddenly came down with a very painful case of the shingles in the days leading up to the show and had plenty of doubts if he would make it at all but dang that mofo was tearing it up on the dance floor come Friday night! The band was clearly ready to cut loose and have a good time now that they had reached their finish line for this tour. So when Eaton spoke to the crowd at intro about last night of the tour, etc, he said that they were all feeling a little "punchy" and that this show was a "sleep deprivation experiment" which I could sure as hell relate to. But when you've subjected your mind and body to this music for decades, it's like the music is in the DNA and a lot of physical ailments can be "overridden" once the music hits....or something like that. The Seattle crowd is always a bit stiff at first compared to Oregon but more movement happens as the band begins to dose them deeper with the music. Also way more of a gender imbalance in Seattle (about 78.42% male) where as down in Oregon it feels more closer to 50/50. Also more age diversity in Oregon which is a plus. Sittin'on Top got the crowd in motion, though, after a super fun Til the Mornin and a very thorough Schoolgirl which felt like some foreshadowing that we were gonna have a lot of Barraco juju tonight, and boy did we...fun kickoff. Big Iron was cool,,,my first time with that one I think and Eaton and Lisa were real smooth and nailed it well. Loose Lucy continued to loosen up the crowd and get more movement going, Pride of Cucamonga had a really tasty jam out of it that felt like they were stretching out into a bit. It actually felt as though part of the intention with this show was to take some of these lesser played old school tunes and see what kind of new territory they could discover/create while stretching them out, which added to the fun for sure. Hurts me Too,,as mentioned,,,LISA!!!! At this point all of the foundation work for the evening was taken care of and they were ready for launching,,, ALLIGATOR!!!! Fuck yeah...rip roaring Then a lovely drop back into WRS which I had heard Rob E hinting at a few songs back. Such a sweet tune and I love how Eaton holds this one like he's holding a newborn baby Then into a rippin Let It Grow to get us flying again before set break. Wow,,,unique and fun first set. Masons-yes! Cool to get Til the Mornin Comes and Masons in same show and groovin set openers. Good Lovin': Man this was the loosest, tightest jamming you can imagine...just completely hanging so loose that it was wound up good and tight, if ya catch my drift. Fucking smoking hot! Friend of Mine: absolutely smooooth as butter and so finely placed after the good loving jamathon. Mans World incorporated more interesting territory than I would have expected..good groove... Then drop into dark star...yes!!!!! WAY interesting musical territory in this one,,,mission accomplished.... Ahhhh more classy old school with New Potato...handled beautifully. Death Don't felt like it was coming in from deep, dark, drippy caverns...intense Viola Lee: Out of hand is about all you can say right here!! Sweet Brokedown to close the night and the tour. Best time I've had at the showbox yet. The show spawned an evening of ridiculous laughter and hilarity deep into the wee hours of the morning,,to the point of sore ribs today!..what more could you ask for??!! Massive gratitude to the band and crew for all that you do. And thanks for making this 4/20 show a special one! Enjoy the rest after such a rippin tour. I've GOT to get this sack of bones that I'm dragging around some sleep!!!! Peace y'all
Pdxhead
Damns....hmmph....jealousy....but then happiness that a band I love so much can pull this off so brilliantly. madcatlaughs
In the six years since I've gotten on the bus, I sometimes feel like I'm missing the legendary shows by one night. That's not to say I haven't enjoyed and appreciated every Dead member band and/or DSO show I've attended...but you always hear about the awesome sets from earlier in the tour while you're standing in line or killing time before house lights. I always felt so envious of the people with those stories, but no more. I finally feel like I was a witness to one of those shows which people who were there will brag about to their friends. For me, the highlight of the show was the Weather Report Suite. I've been fascinated by the Prelude for the past few months and have even started learning it on my violin. I feel it's one of the most tender and heartfelt pieces of melody the Dead produced, but the boys only performed the Prelude and Part One of the Suite a handful of times. I had spent a little time writing in my journal before the show and I tried to make guesses at what might be played during the show and made a wishlist as well. I included Weather Report Suite on the list, though I assumed it was a very, very long shot that I would ever actually hear it performed live. To hear the first few phrases of the song ringing out in the wake of Hurts Me Too and Alligator was almost too much. I screamed, scaring the crap out of my friend (who had eaten a bit of mushroom chocolate during Sitting On Top of the World), then shut up and got teary eyed. So many other wonderful moments throughout both sets...I felt honored to have witnessed something special as I exited the venue into the cool Seattle night. Thank you DSO! Philbusta
I was in attendance. Killer! And was not expecting big iron which they did awesome, everyone thought it'd be me and my uncle but nope. Ironic that they played that song because I've been playing fallout new vegas lately and heard that song 3 times that day before they played. Sweet surprise! Awesome energetic show, they killed the pig pen tunes!! Robby nailed the WSO. Keep going back to that moment. On that note, anyone know where to download the show yet? Nugs.net is not providing as far as I can tell

Forum MVP Island Bro Posted April 23, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted April 23, 2014 Since it was Easter and 4/20, I thought surely they would pull a White Rabbit to wrap things up (or I thought for an original setlist a placement of closing first set could be an interesting experiment...especially on 4/20)...still haven't seen it yet... No lack from this show, though And finishing a show and tour with Brokedown is sooo sweet

MaggieSioux
It was an awesome show! I agree about a different energy on a Sunday vs Saturday. I always leave and have a "DSO hangover" for a few days. I love it!
