Forum MVP PoetryGirl Posted April 6, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted April 6, 2014 The Hey Day at the El Rey: there were some special surprises, multiple!!, Jeff Happy Birthday, Chuckvegas! May your wildest dreams and fondest wishes come true! So it was my ultimate pleasure and sincere thank you to my friend Tracy since 1975, I.e. 4K, for her hospitality in her accommodations in LA to bring her to her first show. She rocked it in her Metallica dress. During Shakedown, Tracy looks at me, remarking this song has been going on for like 12 minutes. I told her yes, but there are songs that will have a definite length, thinking El Paso, etc. Boy, was I so wrong, which was SO RIGHT! This show smoked. I had just enough to drag myself out, my arms out like an orangutan trailing proverbially behind , keeping my space together and eat and get Iwalani to Brentwood after her 25 hour stint: flying out, leaving those Southern skies and visiting Venice Beach with college buddies. All was spent. I think I hardly moved in my sleep Whoa, I loved that Shakedown, then " what is you doin?!" Hard to Handle, nope. No show I know of..... Anyone know another of that combo. Perfect for Tracy. Black Crows helps another into the fold of the show. She said HTH was the only fun song at Black Crows The Sabon show. I love the riffs of honoring Eaton gives the line " you can tell the queen of diamonds by the way she shines" as he leans back and plays eyes closed . Electric rock star playing his custom in-laid modulus. Suddenly I see something flying towards Mattson, another at Eaton. The crowd parted as I was able to stay the throwing hand of a third chunk of ice. Rob said after the song ended.....I don't know who is up front is throwing ice at the band but report this mother****er to security. About that time the ice thrower held up his hands like a heavy weight champ and as security collected him. Rob told to get the F*** out. It took another round ........... Later he returned........but eventually he lost his shit and was gone. Skip was getting funky on the bass all night long and entertained the band as he laid it down dirty, playing it back clean. Lazy Lightning has been bouncing around in my head for a long time now and so glad it showed up in living color. Lisa just amazes me with her crystal pipes. And It Stoned Me..... Ah the sweet peace of that feeling. Tracy stayed through Pride of Cucamunga. Nicer transition than out of TLMD at Charlotte V day. Fun dancing footwork this one allows, until we split into a spacey jam and Tracy and I enjoyed looking for how that one looped back in. I boogied down with Uncle Graham 's friend Shawn to Greatest Story..so many new names, sweet smiling faces....trying to keep up...... So pumped to hear that one. Tangled.... Wow. Lani said it was a faster version. All in the first set!!! The drums were just right and Barraco laid down the chops. Almost a Hornesby feel a couple of times at the beginning.. Propellerhead.... " ah, you give me so much at one time. Yes, I do..... I may have bigger for you. Bbb-bb-igger?" Steep Canyon Ranger violinist Mickey Sanders join the second set from the Panic show. Just beautiful and the boys had the best time playing together. Mattson deferred to Sanders on Russian Lullaby, then bounced over to Rob B and back to Mattson. Eloquent, lovely tender rapture or rhapsody. This song was the sweetest jelly roll. Man Smart, Women smarter! All out boogie fest. The song got quiet 3/4 ways through and Rob E held the sweetest notes vocally, pure. Then it finished.. My Birdsong came. Jenny Wren made to pirouette, forte, pas de deux rae, all that great ballet instruction. My heart floated high, I soared on the wind, and no tears.... All is beautiful. So blessed. So much love. I am a lucky girl. And it soothed my soul. The hall dancers were A+++ . Loved the high stepping hipster doo-da man and expressed that flavor of funk. <There is a falcon calling outside my window right now. Piercing the early morning with his cries.> Drums got hot and into the best I can describe... Sci fi funk alien abduction. The boys near the Soundboard requested a Miracle and got it! We were in the tall guy section, the Sequoias all around. And all was safe, no pestilence. I had been dodging the interstate cars but none hear. Then it hit, Viola. I went airborne. Could've dunked a basketball. Thank you for Black Peter, DSO. Muahh . Muchas smooches. One more twirling lyrical hall dance. Satisfaction. Finished up front. So glad I too wore my Lucky Brand shirt of Lady with the fan. Felt lucky to be here. One more night in the hills. Will there be gold in them hills?! I prospect so. Forum MVP Mango Posted April 6, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted April 6, 2014 Alright I'll try to compose some thoughts here... ...First night in San Diego was fun but left a little something to be desired. Musically great but environmentally less than sound. I had a feeling that I would have a better night last night in LA. A good night's sleep did me very well, along with some decent meals(eating well is my biggest challenge on tour). Gotta keep it light to allow the inspiration to flow. Hung out for a while waiting for family to arrive and watched a friend sell pins(fascinating, really). A little 'on lot' time, of which I experience very little. Some of my fellow deadheads sure do love them Pins. And they are nice pins, I've been known rock one or two myself. Thinking maybe that I'll get my mom, who recently has taken on her son's love of Grateful Dead(and DSO!), a nice one. Anyways, I don't know why i'm talking about pins.... So the El Rey is a really cool place. If I could take the venue and stamp it down somewhere else, remove 100-200 drunks, we'd really be on to something special A psychedelic place though, with the lights and all. I of course would prefer to dance in a free flowing space but you can't always get what you want. It's one of the secrets of enjoying touring; embracing the struggles and blessings of each venue, each night, each moment. You can't control all that goes on around you...I heard a good quote recently, in reference to golf but applied to life, and it went something like "when you try to control that which you cannot, you lose control of what you can". The power we have over our experience is our lens, how we choose to define our reality of the present moment. It's easy in life to get caught up in a roller coaster of emotions, giving too much power to the validity of our thoughts. It's nights like last night, dodging and weaving through the ever flowing human traffic, catching a spin when I can with a little pinch of grace, making one person smile or dance and the next point and laugh, that I do my best to accept and thrive in the present moment, with it's many faces. The potential for bliss is ever present, let yourself be surprised and maybe you'll get shown the light. Cause you just gotta look at it right Looking at this setlist on paper I am reminded of how great of a selection of songs we received last night, and how gloriously they were given. Shakedown was a kick you in the ass no joke opener. No subtle pocket groover here- more slam jam funky madness. Lisa on stage, B3 organ= DSO elective set. So anything can happen....love it. Hard to Handle...smokin', love that jam Back to the 80's with Memphis Blues, no complaints on the Dylan and this one was a burner. I've always found it to be an exhilarating song to dance to. Hmm...stuck in bold now. Oh well. That Loser was indeed sick. Every song feels like it's worth mentioning but I don't have anything specif to say. One of my favorites things about dancing is that I can sometimes, to varying degrees, experience a silencing of thought. In this state it is as though I am being danced, in tune with everyone dancing around me and even the people passing through. I am the music , surrendering to the flow. A sweet shout out to everyone's favorite starhead, Chuckvegas, was followed by an even sweeter version of Van Morrison's, "and it stoned me". I'm not sure that I've heard or seen DSO play this one of before but this one made an impression. Oh the water...The rest of the set wasn't to shabby either Second set is where it really got going for me. Hearing that fiddle on Half Step toook me way back to the first time I heard 'wake of the flood' on vinyl. It was really amazing, evoking dreamy feelings of adventures long ago and far away. I'm not always a fan of 'special' guest but sometimes it really lights up the night, last night being a prime example of this. When I heard that the special guest was a fiddle player, cumberland was the first song that came to mind. Fits very well on this tune I'd say. And then the Russian Lullaby....Aaahhhhhh Yes, I'm sure you all know by now that this is my favorite song. And it was glorious. The piano solo was especially wonderful, Barraco showing some of his chops that aren't always completely exposed within this music. Wow...Stunning. Fiddle>Keys>Guitar....a beautiful passing of the tune, each player coloring it with their unique expression. The rhythm section danced along each twist and turn, providing the undercarriage for the orchestra to bring to life this Lullaby. This song, a gyrating circular expression of joyful death and rebirth, lighting up my soul. Thank you Dark Star Orchestra...you bring so much joy to my life. And we're back to non-caps... Birdsong was so sweet and unexpected in it's location. Sublime musical chemistry. Something is going on here folks, real magic. Viola lifting us to the sky and let us free fall....what an escalating Jam and amazing landing. And I LOVE what Mattson was doing with slowing up and speeding down of the riff at the end. Anyone else notice that? Trippy shit. Black Peter was perfect, one of Jeff's strongest ballads IMO. The solo really soared before ripping us back down to earth for some good ol' rock and roll. Sweaty glow on full blast now. A little Golden Road on top of what was truly an amazing show. I'm blown away, I feel so blessed by this shared experience we have. Let's keep doing it... 7 more nights. On the The Canyon Club tonight, where shit always gets weird.
Forum MVP Supplicated Velvet Thunder Posted April 6, 2014 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted April 6, 2014 yes, let's!!!! what a freakin' show!!!! seven more nights with you Mango and if you don't come to the rest of em and ditch a few classes it will be the only other tour since my first one that I saw more shows on it than you, so….. bring it, love!!!! it is difficult to review such a perfectly amazing heady show. the shakedown opener captured the vibe I have had the last 3 weeks in LA so perfectly!!! I used to compare this place to New York because I didn't KNOW, and DUDES, holy sweet music! this place has SO MUCH FREAKIN HEART! it has been heart heart heart heart heart heart heart since we arrived and I think last night the frenzy was whipped so stiff that we'll all be eating jammy meringue for daaaaaaaaays……. i don't know what that means, but the show last night tasted soooooo good! shakedown blew the place open from the get go. it was hot. it was crowded. everyone was drunk or anticipating their come ups (except a few of you that were BLASTED from the moment I saw you…. oh, kids!) and the energy was nervous and heavy but then shakedown brought us to our hearts and we all poked around to stir up more of it the rest of the night. this venue went from hot and heavy to light and free before they even started singing the words. oh yeah, Mango didn't come up to say what era it was and I walked in and said "yay, original" and got all deeply excited but my crew kept tossing eras around so I just kept my mouth shut to let the excitement happen on its own….. I'm not a spoiler my first 3 DSO shows were originals, this is my element! hard to handle. it was hard to handle. I battled with my ego that tells me i am oh so hard to handle and that no one will ever be able to deal with my big gaping open heart but as Gabe and I spun around each other and tickled and poked and giggled and booty bumped i realized that the concept of ME being hard to handle was only MY EGO that was hard to handle, and that I AM nothing…. except maybe a horny unicorn that can be found drifting about the front rows of DSO with teary eyed giggles. I freakin love you guys so much, every person I have met at these shows. this brings me to twinkle toes, aka the gigantic football jersey wearing guy that the entire front row family protected and kept going though his alcohol blood level would have killed any of the rest of us. THIS GUY WAS COOL. no other giant strange dude has ever bumped into me so much and grabbed on my sweaty skin to spin and dance with me in a way that was IN ANY WAY OK, but Twinkle Toes, this guy was prince charming! he would just clear a big giant space for me with a spin and then reach out and sweep me into in then step away to let me have it til I went back and I was really happy this guy was so innocent and sweet…. much better than the drunk predators. oh, family. oh, them good ol memphis blues. spectacular performance, whole room enjoyed the more obscure tune played at such a high caliber. the loser was perfectly timed and very needed because it had gotten STEAMY in that place! very sexy and melodic and soaring with all that losery goodness we except from DSO. skip is sooooooo great!!! lazy lightning and it stoned me!?!?!? really, DSO?!?! I know u love me (and i know it wasn't FOR me) but seriously, you don't have to play me exactly what I want to hear so much, you might get me EXPECTING shit and we need to keep this FRESH. hehe (no, but really, who was john and a Jeff masterpiece PLEASE!?!) the lazy lightning was divine bolts of liberation supplicated by the spinning masses and received by the great muses and forces of the musical cosmic exchange with grateful bows. the whole band was glowing, the whole room was glowing. AND THEN IT STONED ME!?! we have been listening to that song at least once every other day since coming to Malibu 3 weeks ago while looking out over the cliff edge of the porch at the pacific singing "OHHHHHHH, the WAAAAAATER," every time we walk by and it really did fall over me. completely. entranced. loving it. glad you were there to get this one for us, Chuck, happy birthday, love, so glad I was at your show!!! at this point I had to do a reality check with myself and realize it was still only first set. REALLY!?!? phew, i was in for it. I don't even LIKE PRIDE. i don't. i skip it almost every time even when it is a DSO show I am listening to and I have actually walked away when they have played it or just stopped dancing and hung and the rail breathing. but, um, we were JUST talking about how DSO makes us like songs we didn't know we liked before going to the show and then THEY MADE ME LOVE PRIDE. this song is AWESOME!!!! SKIP IS AWESOME!!!! do it again!!! got us tangled up in blue to send us into set break in a big way. beautiful vibes and the music just flowed from each of their souls into each of ours in that perfect exchange that made Uncle Graham say, after the show, "wow, that was a grateful dead concert!" BTW, I will introduce ya'll to this guy, he is about to be on tour, he just got the bug last year and is doing the run thru the bay with us and I am pretty sure its all over for him after that…. hehehehehehe. Like poetry girl said, the three song accompanied start to second set was beyond belief and spectacular. I knew we'd get a russian with him up there, but the 1/2 step cumberland set it and us up in ways it is hard to put into words, much less a day later. if i could just say "so fucking good" for every song they played this night I would just leave it at that, but I TRYYYYYYYY….. crossed that lazy river cause I gotta get down and find a land that's free for you and me and we found it at the El Rey together last night. Blessed bliss. they always do man smart women smarter so well, and it was such a good tune to kick the vibe back up after nostalgia lane. present moment, check. birdsong soaring into drums then space was so powerful it almost overwhelmed me. really special. fly through the night, we did. the miracle landed right on time and we all knew we had received one this night…. it was one of those and no one wanted it to end. but NONE OF THIS could have prepared me for THAT VIOLA LEE……. THAT VIOLA LEE was the BEST EVER performed by the hands of man. no shit, dudes, I'm not just talking off my ass or impressed that they can play a lot of notes per second….. this was one of the most epic pieces of music EVER. def best viola lee. I stood jaw dropped so often, starring at them banging the notes into my brain with such finesse that each note just stayed and bounced around and couldn't leave and then every note was there at once and I could barely breathe and no one in the room was not thinking "holy shit!" but also speechless and unable to communicate anything but wide eyes and head shakes and gapping mouths. DAMN, DSO, you just get better every time!!!! beautiful breezy black peter marched us to our grateful graves and we all had our friends come around. i have never done this before and it happened out of nowhere but as they sang the last few "and my friends they come around" at the end I ended up spinning in a circle and reaching out to touch every person in a circle around me two people deep in a rush of love and each one really felt it and i was dead center in the front by that point and man, guys, that FELT GOOD! satisfaction was perfect as Uncle Graham and his girl made it back to us so we could push them up front for the last song. ahhhhh, DSO, you give me so much and I STILL can't get no satisfaction and find myself just having to come back again, and again, and again, and again, and again….. it's just so goooooood! that's ok, though, cause I am following a golden road of unlimited devotion and there was NO BETTER song to encore THIS show with, good job, ya'll, that was IT. come right away!!!! our year anniversary in seattle will be so wonderful! last night was our, "we met standing right here 2 years ago" show and tonight will be my, "this was my favorite show of all time last time" show and I am READY. whole LA family will be there tonight, and I must say, finally attending a show with my boyfriend and my new lover with nothing but peace between us all is just about the way I always IMAGINED attending shows. people get so jammed up with the only have one "ONE" racket that I often get a little critical of the lack of "free love" in this scene. but hey, YOU JUST GOTTA POKE AROUND, after all. this is gonna be a great night. I am stocking up on health force vitamixes and lots of sunshine so I have the energy to withstand the magical tidal wave of sound that is DSO. may they still carry me away. oh, the water. Forum MVP PoetryGirl Posted April 18, 2014 Forum MVP Report Share Posted April 18, 2014 Sometimes there's a knock on the door by the universe just letting you know that grace has your in her hands, things are unfolding as they should. My lovely friend (who I found out just the week before in little ole Sparkle City was heading out to LA area and going to be there!!!!!!!!) and I had a date with fate. It was a beautiful night of song , music and dance in El Rey with her. I treasure it more than you know. So here's the juice....... We were standing outside after the show when I looked at my phone to find the time. It was 1:03. I was born 10/3 and at that moment a jingle jangle cat walks up and hands me my birthstone, tourmaline, and says, see how that works for you. Wow.... Stunning. Thank you gathering of the vibes. I know you have me in the palm of your hand. Magical!!!!
