so for the record and I quote myself:

"I think the 1980s as a decade where amazing .... it brought us many a beautiful Grateful Dead set lists, many a show that I attended to see said set lists, I also played some mean basketball during those days, graduated from college, and of course Ronald Reagan was in the White House for many of that decade... bing bang boom zing zang and a giddyup .... no wait a double giddyup"

I guess since we are clarifying are actual stances.  I love me some 80s Dead as well.  I really like some of the sets and I have shows from that decade that stay in the listening rotation.  However, I think 68 thru 71 and 76 thru 78 the shows and set lists are generally more to my liking than the 80s shows.  Thus, my comment that the 80s suck.  I could go on for hours talking about this subject as I love all of this music and can't seemed to get enough of it.  Please send me some of your favorite 80s gigs if you would like.  I've probably listened to most of them, but always looking for new shows.

A show review of this gem was forthcoming in due time.  Sorry I'm not sorry for the preliminary banter.

After being inundated with 80s shows in Boulder (top-notch music nonetheless) and a stellar albeit low personal energy elective in Flagstaff, I was very pleased by the appearance of a late 70s gig and I was pretty sure I knew the gig was 10/17/78 Winterland after the closing Miracle > Stagger Lee > Jack Straw.  I think it is funny this set popped up after I stated my belief that this run at Winterland was musically superior to the music played in Egypt, but that really has no bearing on what was played here.  All in all, this was my favorite show of the tour.  The music was topnotch and the dance space was abundant.  Although a slanted floor made it difficult for me to turn right and put some aches into my body, I was free to spin, twirl, jump and skip.  This music often makes me want to run and jump around like a young child and tonight to my delight I would have the space to do so.

Promised Land

FOTD

Mama Tried

Mexicali Blues

T Jed

Miracle

Stagger Lee

Jack Straw

The promised land was ripping and rocking fun and I fully took advantage of the what seemed like a football field of space available to me.  Unfortunately, only 3 or 4 big dancers at this show with me, but like I said in a previous post, given the space and this band gets everyone grooving.  The FOTD always touches my soul and tonight I would be sleeping somewhere short of Utah in a car on the side of the road; the experience here was cleansing.  The band cowboys out for a minute and we all dance and prance to the familiar and very danceable tunes.  Why is it that in a lot of shows and set lists I really like, a song I don't like (T Jed) is so often there.  The closing segments of this set were mesmerizing.  The dance fury of what to me seems like a rare first set Miracle, although it may not be as rare as I think just unfamiliar.  I'm used to 80s miracles out of drums.  Then Jeff delights us with his take on Stagger Lee.  Big smiles and laughs all through the crowd.  Then back into what seemed like even more frenzied pace than Miracle to close the set with a rocking Jack Straw.  This set was absolute bliss'd out pleasure for me.  I couldn't be happier to have so much space and the night in the hotel really did my legs good.

Set 2

Scarlet >

Fire

Estimated >

Eyes

Drums

World to Give

Around and Around

US Blues

Are you kidding me? That opening segment was mind boggling fun.  An emotional roller coaster that ends in Triumph and delight with the Eyes of the World.  Those 4 songs would satisfy me as a whole show.  The playfulness of Scarlett, the somber yet excited Fire, the haunting and psychedelic Estimated and the joyfully triumphant eyes cover tremendous ground on the array of human emotion and take me on an exhausting emotional yet joyful journey.  The break of drums is needed, although I dance through some of it tonight.  The space is just too good to waste. My World was back in Colorado and my heart ached through the song by its close; I was ready to start the race home.  I didn't leave but I let my heart rate settle and started to find my bearings.  It was going to be a long 15 hour drive home.  I would get a few hours on the side of the road, but no real sleep tonight.  If I get home before daylight...

The 2 AZ shows were very soul cleansing for me.  The open road on my own again.  Nobody's cares but my own.  Tons of dance space and lots of smiles and laughter.  I'll be back.
