As much as I love Boulder and the many DSO runs I have done it that city in the past ...

once again .... I sadly must pass on this weekend ...

mainly because the venues in Boulder just get to darn packed ... now the city of Boulder, Pearl Street, the mountains are really what I have enjoyed and miss ...

Ahhh.  10th and Pearl for a spell in the summer of 1993 - Flatirons right out my back window.  Wonderful few months until the owner discovered there were 6 of us there on a lease for 2.  Doh.  Off to Nederland and the Roosevelt National Forest.  Someone forgot to tell me there are bears up there and that you shouldn't leave anything edible in your tent.  Another story for another day :)

MAN....I would love to be back there this weekend.  Should be good times - back into the singularity :)

How about a recreation of 1.22.78 this weekend?  DSO appears to have never attempted it for one reason or another.  Certainly no way to quite recreate the vocals of Jerry unless Jeff wanted to gargle some glass and chase it with some type of solvent.  As for the Close Encounters jam, I think Mattson could pull it off - and then some.  I'm also sure that the rest of the band would have a blast with this too!

I actually had it in my mind that they would give this a spin in Jamacia.  Nope.

If not this weekend, I would LOVE to see this pop-up somewhere.  Chances are I would miss it unless it came out at Jubilee or Blk Mtn, but those who took it in would be so glad that it finally surfaced.

I do know this (I have been given inside-info), whatever Boulder gets this weekend is going to be world-class.  Light the fuse....... :)

i saw Dso recreate 1.22.78 Eugene at Amherst 11.17.07. that weekend was the Grateful Dead Symposium at Umass amherst..there were big screens with digital visual displays behind the band..JK toyed with Close encounters but never did the full riffs consecutively..but during that space, on the screens were these big aliens and ufo's..really cool. during the OtherOne, Mountain Girl came on stage and was reciting a poem.. after the show they played video of 8.27.72 Bird song and Sing Me back Home from 'never before seen' (at that time) sunshine daydream footage. never forget it...Dennis McNally was one row behind us the whole show ..Steve&Kris,remember that?

I would love to see that 78 as well, Tea.

Jeff has pulled off the close encounters jam,,it was awesome. Last year in Eugene (4/17/13) he slipped it in out if drums/space and before dear mr fantasy,,it was awesome. It was an original setlist, but I think he was riffing off a 78 Eugene show where Jerry did the close encounters thing (how many shows did Jerry do this?) and he did it full spectrum,,it was awesome. Jeff fully seemed in his element on this and I'm sure he will bust it out again some time,,it was awesome.

Just realized that 1/22/78 is the Eugene Mcarthur Court show I was referring to (I thought it was later that year)...so I would guess that's the only time Jerry did the the close encounters jam.....but definitely not the only time he communed with aliens...

Thanks for the info!  I checked Edbase and that date didn't pop up and then I just noticed that they had this show listed as an Original.  Sounds like quite the time!

Also psyched to know that Jeff gave close encounters a spin in the not-too-distant past (thanks for the knowledge IB!)  This gives me hope that they will give it a go again - eventually!

For those lucky enough to be in Boulder this weekend - Have a freaking blast!
