Favorite Garcia one line "vocal explosions"

Do you have any favorite one liners by Garcia? I'm talking about when Jerry reaches deep for a level of emotion that seems unfathomable. Sometimes all he needs to do is give a word or even a syllable extra emphasis and I'll be amazed, but certain one line deliveries utterly stop me in my tracks.

Here are 3 examples of what I'm talking about:

1. 3/30/88 Brendan Bryne - Morning Dew. Although every word Jerry utters in this version is spellbinding, the total jaw dropper is the "walk me out in the morning dew today" after the first jam. Worth going to an audience recording for the crowd's reaction.

2. 3/21/94 Richfield Coliseum - Stella Blue. I've always theorized that Jerry knew his guitar crops were rapidly waning by this time, so he consciously compensated by singing the lights out. Witness the improvised vocal flourishes in some '94 version of Stellas where there would previously have been guitar work. The awe-inspiring moment at Richfield, however, is "and nothing comes for free".

3. JGB, Merriweather 9/1/89 - Lucky Old Sun. This one is more from the "totally out of nowhere" category, and it'll knock you out of your seat. It's the final verse, "wash all my troubles away".

Does anybody else obsess over this shit? Any other examples come to mind?

Pretty much any well rendered Stella gets my spine tingling........

"I've stayed in every blue light cheap hotel......"

"Dust off those rusty strings just one more time........"

And musically, also in Stella, just the way Jerry bends the guitar string just before he sings ".....Stella Blue....." pretty much gets me every time.

Nice thread.

Here are a few (starting out of left field for some):

Alpine Valley 1989 and Deer Creek 1990 (Desolation Row):  Not even a Jerry tune.  In both of these versions, Jerry comes in with > "Between the windows of the sea, where lovely mermaids flow!"  Kills it.

Ramble On > "Goodbye momma and poppa!  Goddbye Jack-n-Jill, the grass ain't greener, the wine ain't sweeter, either side of the hill!"  4/24/78 and 7/8/78 come immediately to mind.

Loser > "Last fair deal in the country, last fair deal in the town!  Put your gold money where your love is baby, before you let that deal go down."  3/24/90 & 9/3/77 are standouts amongst standouts!

China Doll & Attics > You know the parts.  I know they all come in at the final salvo but it's ALL Jerry.  Too many to count here.

Simple Twist of Fate > "She was born in spring but I was born.....tooooooooooooo LATE!!!"  Stunning finish to a song that stays in it's lane vocally.   3/18/78 is THE version with 2/28/80 being my honorable mention.

Gotta get back to work but these came quickly to mind.  Curious about your favorite trancendent moments where Jerry just sweeps in SLAYS it vocally :)

EDIT:  A few of mine stretch the one-liner attribute ~ I'll try harder next time :)

5-2-70 harpur college

In the acoustic rider. " id rather drink muddy water, sleep in a hollow log.

Same show morning dew

"Where have all the people gone my honey"?

Also regardless of date and show anytime he yelled " id rather be with you" during standing on the moon. Especially towards the end. Would get me.

Also love the way he drags out his baaaaaaaby in how sweet it is. You can feel his smile through the speakers

Tea,

Jerry was feeling it at Red Rocks '78, that's for sure.  Check out the second verse in Must've Been The Roses.  So intimate sounding it's as if he swallowed the microphone.

As to the lines you quote from Loser, I'll come out of left field with a 1984 selection:  Ventura 7/22.

A wonderful Roses to be sure!  It has an almost sweet ferociousness to it – I can’t think of another way to describe it.  I also love Bob’s ‘shhhhhh’ during Wharf Rate right before “ ….cause I know the LIFE…”  They all wanted dead silence for that part.

Nice Pull > I’m very familiar with the Ventura 84 shows   :)  The Greek shows sound unbelievable and they came in and kept the mother rollin right along into Ventura.  Jerry’s vocal constraints were starting to rally take over but he was bound and determined to let it all hang out during this Loser.  A guttural, almost primal tone being shouted during the sustained parts of the vocals.  Raw and Sweet!

Thanks Dead Duck > There are indeed a good number of versions of the final vocal flurry during SOTM!  Check out 3/20/92 for the vocal blowout.  Check out 8/21/93 if you want to hear what I think is one of the (if not the all-around) best ever.

How about the melon-rattling during the all-time best US Blues (4/12/78)?  “I’m gonna steal your wife!!!!”  The band was angry.

In the reprise in Lonesome and A Long Way From Home there are some really good one liners from Jerry, particularly when then music dies down towards the end. 1976-04-01 and 1978-03-18 are some excellent examples. Despite having laryngitis Jerry had some really vigorous vocal performances in 1978. That Red Rocks '78 show attests to that. Really like his performance on Ship of Fools from that show too.

As for Standings, although so many versions saw great vocals I'll never forget my first love - Irvine Meadows '89.  We had never heard anything like the final "I'd rather be with you!"

A couple more:

9/16/87 - He's Gone - the whole "nothing's gonna bring him back" section. Jerry was loosening up for the Dew 2 nights later.

9/18/90 - To Lay Me Down, final flourish and improvised, "I want you to Lay me down"...often Jerry's best lines were predicated by a "lord" or a "well" or a "I want" or whatever seemingly innocuous little phrase.

Hey Torin, didn't see your respones....Agreed on the 4/15 Mississippi, and what's even more intense if the searing jam that Jerry ushered in with that vocal push.

My favorite line from the 4/12 US Blues is "gonna steal your wife."

Didn't know that about thew "sweet Suzie" in '79 - I'll check that one out.

That last show in 1986 at RFK when Bob was introducing the band during Satisfaction and Jerry adds " my most favorite person in the whole world- Bob Weir"

Classic! There's a strum that Jerry lets loose during the intros that pierces the air like few before it. BIG sound!

WELL YA KNOW HE HAD TO DIE. Right as cryptical slips into the othr one. Not as good at citing specifics but nonetheless a screeching one liner

I was gonna quote this one but go with Jeff's version from last years jubilee

Was a great one indeed!
