A song you think DSO does better than the GD did...

For some of you, I'm hugging the thin line of blasphamy with this topic.  There is not a laundry list but a few have come to my mind:

Unbroken Chain*

Visions of Johanna* - I'm tempted to remove this one but won't

* A bit of a cop-out for obvious reasons.  Here are some others:

Queen Jane ~ DSO slays this tune and takes it places the GD never bothered to (at least the ones I've seen/heard)

You Ain't Woman Enough ~ Nuff said

Alligator ~ There are some great old-time versions of this by the GD which are recklessly good.  DSO just puts it all together better - IMO.

Two Souls ~ Perfect harmony :)

Anybody want to come out on the limb with me?  There's room and I haven't heard any 'cracking' sounds - yet.

I think DSO does most GD songs better than the times I saw the Dead ('87-'95)  But the ones that really stick out are many of the Bobby tunes: Greatest Story (especially with Jeff's cool picking at the end), Minglewood-  (more upbeat),  Estimated - (more upbeat),  Feel Like a Stranger, to name a few.  As I said, when I saw the Dead, these songs seemed to be sung w/o that much feeling as they are with DSO, maybe the boys were tired of them, etc.  But now I am actually enjoying them and happy to hear them instead of waiting for them to get over.

I used to be pretty snobby about a few particular Bobby songs that I wasn't that fond of when I was going to GD shows, but I must say that having Dr. Eaton on stage has helped me completely let go of my "issues", and completely enjoy the ride.

Tea,

While this whole topic more than borders on blasphamy, you especially lost me on the following counts:

Visions.  Come one, man.  I would take the vocal track alone of Garcia singing this over anything DSO could do with the full band. I'm serious.

Alligator.  You answered this one yourself:  "There are some great old-time versions of this by the GD which are recklessly good."

Two Souls.  For the love of jesus.  Are you familiar with the Europe '72 Complete Recordings?  Please.

rudedoggg,

Have you listened to a Spring '77 Looks Like Rain lately?  How about the early 80s?

I knew John A would get the panty-wad treatment from my comments. It was partially by design :)

I'm takin back Visions. Not matter Garcias condition, hearing him sing those words will never be rivaled. The voice of reason has spoken to me.

I still like DSO's Alligator better. Their controlled recklessness just resonates better with me.

As for 2 souls > Yes I am familiar with Europe 72 recordings and have listened intently. A stretch for sure but I just like the way DSO does it.

John A > You give the nod to any DSO tune or is any such exercise off limits in your head? Just wondering...

Ouch - I was baited, and successfully at that.

Well played, Tea! :D

Although the exercise is indeed largely off limits for me, I'll nonetheless throw out a possibility - Maggie's Farm.  I've heard DSO smoke that one pretty hard, certainly relative to anything the Dead ever did with it.

I will have to disagree on visions as well tea. It's too vocally based like comes a time for DSO to surpass the dead. Even in arguably the Deads worst show ever, the Saturday soldier field 95 show, that visions was amazing. Now Jerry was perfect on it when everything else was crap. No clue how he could remember visions and not remember Althea. Someone once told me TelePrompTer but that doesn't seem right.

And john, sometimes bobby seemed like he was faking it on the intense emotional LL Rain. Bobby was the rock star and this is such an emotional song. Rob seems like he's channeling deep emotions sometimes when he does it. Of all the SBDs of DSO playing ll rain that 8-16-13 stands out to me. I will play that version if I'm sad and want to let go of emotions. If I'm bring honest and I never like to put DSO down but Jeff's vocals will never match Jerry's. I think Jeff is amazing but vocally Jerry had angelic chops. Rob is about at Bobby's vocal level and on a few songs I think rob is just better at reproducing the emotions than bobby was. But it comes down for me that DSO is out there creating new music still. If the dead was still together and touring we wouldn't have this discussion.

Please also note that I'm a complete novice compared to most of you. I'm still discovering so much Dead. I'm not familiar with all JGB stuff. It's honestly not my fav even though I do love a lot of it. So my experience is limited compared to most here. I don't hide or deny it and I know I'll never be the super computer that Tea is. That being said DSO ROCKS!!!!

rude,

I don't diagree with any of that.   Very fairly stated.

As to why the '95 Jerry could sing Visions and not Althea, what I've heard is that supposedly "familiar" songs were either not put on the TelePrompter or that Jerry didn't bother using it for material he should in theory have known cold.  Of course it didn't always play out that way.

Jerry Band had such a good natured lightness of being to it. His shows frolicked and enjoyed life. Such good positivity......I love a JGB show. His pure emotion that pours forth.... I think of Stella Blue....I have seen that man levitate of the ground... I would swear it. He was like the Jesus picture that folllows you around the room with its eyes.... Jk . But you know what I mean.

Conversely, the Dead can spin some heavy concepts... I missed the Copps Arena shows after hearing Landover's first BTW since 1974. I had been listening to that song heavily. It permeated my being and to hear it was dumbfounding. I was done for a bit. I had the gather my brains in a bucket and figured some stuff out.
