Me and my Uncle must go

Weir has easily played it 1000 times between the Dead, Ratdog, the Other Ones and Furthur .

If he drops it maybe he'll play some of my picks in the fantasy Ratdog games on Furthur Forum and Ratdog.org, they've just been languishing there unplayed and I need the points maaaaan !!

C'mon Weir ! Gimme the  Blue Sky, Big Boss Man, Desolation Row, Big Iron or  Take Me to the River that you haven't even touched this tour !

It's a fun enough exercise - I think it's the 'tournament elimination' format while trying to cast off the 'weakest' is what causes my malfunction.  YMMV.

I like Top 5 versions of a song or best shows of a given year because then people come in with sweet trump cards or left-field examples that end up being the diamonds in the rough.

OK > if I can't immediatly think of off-the hook versions of one of these cowboy tunes then it gets slotted towards the bottom.  The more I can name, the higher it goes on the list.  Mama Tried and Big Iron have to go the bottom.  I hate to even type the words......

1.  El Paso - so many great versions to choose from although the bulk of them occur before 1974 and they are part of jam segments. The 'noodle' is what makes it tops for me. 11.21.73 has been trending for me recently.

2.  MAMU - this tune while played to death was usually a warmup for a Big River or Mexi.  I don't think the songs that followed would reach the critical mass they would without MAMU.  I love the version from 8.6.71.  5.21.72 and 4.24.78 are also stout.

3. Big River - Tough call between this and Mexicali, flip a coin.  I think Big River wins with a photo-finish.  Just a little more critical mass with Big River over the years.  I love the one that comes out of MAMU from 4.24.78 with 'Stayin-Alive' teases abound.  The one from 8.13.75 is a freaking romp too.

4.  Mexi - Again, flip a coin with Big River.  Not as much of a fan of the earliest versions even though 8.27.72 is very good.  There is a totally absurd circus-like version from 12.12.90.  Jerry goes OFF before it shifts into Maggies Cumberland...er....Farm.

5.  Mama Tried.  - Very straightforward rocker.  I really like the version from 3.31.87.  Bobby is feelin it.

6.  Big Iron (sorry Chuck) - The best way I can characterize my feeling about this song:  It's not you, it's me.  Love the song but we haven't been 'dating' for long enough yet.  Eaton has his way with this tune whenever I've see it - I love the lyrics and the way it's sung.  It's stays a little too close to home IMHO.

Back to work. :(

I wish I had your brain. I'm guessing those dates just popped up without even verifying setlists.

Plus I got some needed firepower on my "El Paso kicks ass" bandwagon.
