Wow! I was blind sided on that one! Would have loved to have seen that Upper Darby show.

Thanks for the update.

My 3 day tour starts tonight in Orlando.

Since I was so wrong on my prediction last night, here is my following predictions.

Orlando: 1989+ show

St. Pete: Elective

Ponte Vedra: 69-71 show

Not too bad on my predictions for the first 3 shows in Florida.

I think that every DSO show is excellent, but every one in ten or so I leave saying "best show ever". That was this one once again.

I was looking forward to Ponte Vedra the most because I had the best memories from my last Florida trip there. We arrived as the first song started...bummer because I love me an early style Dancin. Did get to catch most of it including one of my favorite jams, which for lack of a better name i call "hypnotize jam"...i've also been told that perhaps it's "feelin groovy" but I thought was the jam between china cat and rider circa 73-74. Anyways, I love it! Major 7th dreaminess. Till the Morning Comes is a great song in my opinion, don't know why it never got played but it is a rocker. Hard to Handle has another one of those Jams I love, don't know if there is a name for it. Anyways, by this time the crowd was starting to come to life a bit. Everything was smokin...Easy Wind, Doin that Rag>GDTRFB especially so.

By the second set a serious dance party had developed in the back, much to my delight. As I was saying in my Jannus review, it's all about the communal dancing. Celebrating with friends, strangers, making new friends. The language of dance could speak volumes...I personally often feel that a lot more is expressed through non verbal communication, like dance, than what we attempt to convey to each other through words. Like, for instance, this review wont even do a scratch of justice in describing how amazing my experience was....and without words being said I know that I am not alone in my joy. That is what truly lights me up- the open channel connection with other people, especially those who are tapped into enjoying the moment. I love the way time slows down, thoughts become bubbles that float away on their own....we each gain super powers that we otherwise would not have access to. People from all walks of life come to GD related shows...I love that. Everyone has their own trip and I can't tell anyone how to enjoy the show.....that being said, I love it when like minds come together and dance. Letting the egos drop away, if only for a bit, and letting the music play the band. It doesn't happen every night....but it's nights like this one that will always keep me coming back..

Second set was sublime. What is there really to say? You know the band delivered.

Hey I was thinking that Doin that Rag>GDTRFB would've been pretty cool to hear. Didn't ever think of pairing those two together, but I like the idea a lot.

The jam you are talking about is generally called the "Tighten Up jam." The name comes from the song Tighten Up by Archie and the Drells (1968; the date makes sense when you think about when the dead started incorporating this jam). In reality I'm pretty sure the jam has no official name. Totally similar rhythm guitar in Hypnotize. I think that both songs use the same clave rhythm, but I couldn't tell you for sure. The GD threw the Tighten Up jam in a bunch of Dark Stars and Dancin's back in the day. If you like the jam then you should really check out the version in the Dark Star off of Dick's Picks Vol. 2 1971-10-31. You're right, the Feelin' Groovy jam is from China Rider's '73-'74. It was dropped after that. I've heard it in a lot of old Dark Stars too, including my personal favorite 1972-04-08.

Alright I'm done spewing information now. Someday I'll put in all together in a GD listening guide, but I think that has already been done. Glad it was a good time. I'm jealous of all those good tunes you got to catch!

you said it perfectly aaron. with such eloquence and articulation too. it's shows like these that you just never want to end/leave. the dance party that formed during the 2nd set is one ill never forget probably for the rest of my life. this show was probably my favorite Mattson show to date. incredibly strong early 70s GD. love this little comfortable venue, in an area filled with some really nice heads, Dso could do a 3night run here a part of their florida run and i'd be satisfied

...coming up soon, TOP 5 Dark Star thread...

...I may have done that before but it's happening again...

...the one on this night was superb.
