I thought we might give this game a shot. I wanted to start with something really light as opposed to jerry ballads, first set opener, multi song pairings, etc. just vote for the song that you think is the weakest of the bunch. At the end of voting that song gets eliminated and a new poll will be made with the remaining songs and so on and so forth until we are left with best bobby cowboy song. As for right now, we'll let the voting go til Sunday at midnight but let's just see how it goes.

As a note, I didn't include me and bobby McGee, CC rider, jack straw, on the road again for a variety of reasons so feel free to give it to me. Bu for the sake of discussion what makes a bobby cowboy song a bobby cowboy song to you?

If this one goes well, I was thinking we could do Brent songs next.

Tough one. MAMU Has just been played to death but I still have an affinity for it. I’m going to vote off Mama Tried for no other reason than it’s too short. El Paso is my favorite – especially when you get that good ‘gallop-noodle’ from Jerry (or Jeff). 72-73 were sooooo good!

MAMU, while overplayed, is the classic. I'm not always in the mood for Mexicali but i think it's actually a good tune. I like the chord changes in it and the lyrics are fun. Big River can be a a romper and a half, especially with DSO playing it. Big Iron is just flat out awesome. And I'll take Mama Tried over El Paso as far as Marty Robbins songs go. I find El Paso to be boring, never really picks up and Jerry noodles along. I am down with a Dark Star>El Paso>Dark Star like on 11/15/71 Austin, TX.

Went with big iron. Not for dislike but just ranked last out of the list for me. Next probably would've been Mexicali. MAMU is not one I look for in a setlist, but live I never have complaints. The other 3 songs i grew up liking before GD versions. So they always put a smile on my face.

I voted El Paso.  Big Iron was suck a weak link the Dead never played it, and I thusly discounted it in the voting.

All that said, I think "most horrifying rendition of a Garcia ballad by Weir" would be a more appropriate topic.  I would vote Standing On The Moon but there was a single Weir led Morning Dew on "The Dead" arena tour that can't be discounted.

Found > I officially recind my vote.  Keep 'em all.  I'm gonna say something I won't be able to take back :)

I can do best of the worst provided they are the likes of:  Samba, Eternity, Childhood's End, Broken Arrow (decent lyrics), Corina (I actually like the jam vehicle).  SHITTTTTTTTT!  I'm hopeless....OK Day Job is horrible.  Well....sorta.  Damn > my ADD is kicking in big time.

It's all for fun and really trying to find what's the best consensus song in any given category, not the "worst." In one way or another, we all love all of these songs because they bring us joy whether it's in the form of a bathroom break or for the love of the story in each song. Plus, I enjoy hearing the variety of opinions we all have on different songs... so speak your mind T4T. I'm hoping we get a lot of participation in these cause they could end up being a lot of fun.

Once I stopped listening to the melodies and lyrics and started focusing on what Jerry was doing during the cowboy songs, I really started to love them. As tea said, listen to lead guitar during El Paso, it fucking cooks. Jerry used to smile when he was ripping up that lead. Makes me smile thinking about him smiling.

picked big iron for same reasons listed above.  i do understand the inclusion here on the DSO page but I had to pick it.  if it was "first set only" I woulda gone with El Paso, but like you mentioned, it sure can sparkle into second set in the middle of vast spacey dark star expanses sooooooooo well!!!!  actually, maybe mama tried over el paso either way.  hmmmm….

fun poll!

I'm surprised El Paso got so many. Not a huge fan in recordings but live that song really shines. How can u not get all excited when u hear I picked a good one; he looked like a good one.
