The Filler was a great Mr. Charlie. Very big crowd The friend I took wants to go to the Jubilee. I am hoping I can figure out a way to go to the Fort Lauderdale final show of the tour. Thanks for the push it was a great time. Incredible energy. GermanShepherd
Arrived in Detroit on Sunday after leaving the Pabst. This particular venue is a combination of fun. It has a bowling alley, nice cafe, pizza joint open until 2am (Sgt. Pepperoni's), small music venue, and the large music venue. Frisk-free entry, no intimidation, with a hand-stamp for re-entry. Being a Monday night, not as many people as the Vic or Pabst, which to me was very much a welcomed break. Don't get me wrong...the place was packed, but there was room to groove, hit the bars and bathrooms in record time, and not rub elbows with every swingin' dude that walks past. Parking was $5 right out back, and beer was $9 for a 24-oz tall boy, with plenty of selections. Sugaree started off with the drummers looking at each other as the first notes weren't quite in sync - that's okay, all is forgiven. Up until Passenger, I'd say the energy level was 'relaxed.' I thought Passenger would've been the set closer but they kept going and Stagger Lee was a nice little story, followed by a rockin' Miracle. I should also mention Rob did a great job at El Paso, with so many lyrics to remember. A quick visit to the car to stash the coats (no coat check here) and hit my stash, and back into action. Setbreak was short and the band was ready with Bertha. I think the entire second set was bouncy, even Heart of Me which normally kinda is slow but Lisa just has the Midas touch. Highlight for me was Eyes of the World, very long and technical, with key changes and so forth that went without flaw. And my personal fav, Wharfy, was super strong with the longest interlude between the last two verses, I thought Jeff was never going to let me know if he wandered downtown or not? With a long NFA>GDTRFB as I've heard so many times before, I knew the E: was going to be the classic Johnny B. Goode, and they ripped it up to end with Mr. Charlie, and left us all in a great mood. It was easy leaving the place with plenty of egress and security never bothered a soul. Another show down, 7 left to go. redeyedbert
If I wasn’t at the show and looked at the first set I would have thought, “I didn’t miss anything”. Its short. Miracle 1st set closer seems weird. It wasn’t your typical Miracle though. They played it like a set closer and I had a nostalgic, “Oh yea, Miracle!!” moment. It’s all Over Now was also a star of the first set. Song starts and I’m expecting your standard fare but not tonight. Super rocking, people dancing. Big Solos. It seemed out of nowhere. I take for granted some songs that can really rock but maybe I’ve outgrown, or moved on, whatever. Loser and Passenger were other 1st set standouts. As far as the vibe of the show. Big crowd for a Monday night. We got there early. Found our friends Jon and Greg on the rail in front of Jeff. We went down there to start with the thought we will move when it gets to much. Through the first set we had a ton of room. Plenty of space to dance. Plus even though we were in front of Jeff, Eaton was loud. If I can hear Eaton loudly I’m super happy. He was playing a lot of slide. I was in ecstasy. There were some young girls talking behind me but I’m pretty good at blocking out talkers and the first set was great. 2nd set sound was amazing but the girls beat me. At some point they came back and got in front of me and I couldn’t ignore them anymore. We moved back. My friends stayed and tried politely to get them to shut up, but he was met with the kind, Fuck Off from one of her male companions. Oh well. These types are probably at every show, but sometimes you get lucky and don’t cross paths with them. Further back from about Eyes on, was cool because I still had Eaton loud, but Skip was louder now. The Wharf Rat was intense. Jeff just went off on the two solos and the harmonies were just so powerful. I was pretty much spent from NFA on. I thought, I’m tired ( long day, work then show ) I can’t dance anymore and then they played GDRFB. What are you gonna do? So I danced some more. Good show. I decided against calling it great only so next time I say a show is great maybe it will have some clout. I’ve seen Monday shows in other cities. I’m telling you Detroit has to be one of the places that gives the band a strong Monday night crowd.
