I think it largely went out when smoking was outlawed in venues

^^^ This

If you really NEED to get right during a show, you can be safe just about anywhere as long as you do it right.  Whipping out the deluxe glass or sparkin a fattie would probably be poor choices.

I've not been to a huge # of venues for DSO but the only one where I would not do it would be:  Best Buy Theatre.  All the urinals were full so I go into a stall.  Security popped in and gazed over the partition TWICE for the couple minutes I was in there.  That place scares me.

Interestingly, security at the door at the Orange Peel in Asheville was huge surprise.  It took forever to get in there because they were being EXTREMELY thouough.  Once in it was a free-for-all though.

YMMV.

I medicated via pen every 10 to 15 min over new years indoor with no issue but also hung out in the rafters of the place. I had 2nd row seats to msg once and ended up in the nose bleeds cause they wouldn't let us smoke on the floor.

Pocket vaps get confiscated during gate searches. Peeps were firing up all New Years run and no security came running. I think it depends on the venue. In the Midwest, the pageant in St. Louis is the only venue that empties pockets. It's weird that there was no search in Huntington and in St. Louis there are 5 security guys in front of the stage that will jump the barrier in a heartbeat if they see a smoker. I think it all comes down to insurance. Was told that for a closed balcony Pageant show they had 16 security guards there. That's a ton. Then in Bloomington there were 0 security. Venues that host lots of harder core shows tend to have more security and small theaters who don't, seem to have little security.

hahaha at the beaver creek show in CO this past year the announcer lady said "we don't allow any flames in our theatre, but if it doesn't need a flame, have at it!!!" aka: she declared it dab city….. nice that it is legal here, which does not mean its always ok at shows, lots of places here will take your stuff, but they are NOTHING compared to the Orangepeel in Asheville (that place…. don't get me started on how one venue can destroy the good vibes of an entire town…) or some other east coast venues.

BUT, 7 out of 10 DSO shows I could have puffed down all night and at about 4 out of 10 shows you can do just about ANYTHING at all (something about those theaters with your grandma running security- they don't give a damn!) right in the people's face and they don't even seem to see you.  I really like those 4 in 10 cause it gets really silly. the 3 in 10 that SUCK aren't a big deal, though, just gotta make sure to ask locals before being too wild ;)

Everybody answers to the Fire Marshall.  If the Fire Code is NO OPEN FLAMES i.e no smoking, then the venue will crack down hard on any smoke.  With one nod the Fire Marshall can shut a venue down tight.  Now, the story I heard about Best Buy Theater in NYC was a simple matter of the HVAC system not venting properly and while a Furthur show was going on so was the Lion King.  2 completely different demographics and the Lion King theater filled with the sweet smell of victory a bit too much so that's why they're busting balls.

Most places you will be fine as long as you dont bring in the bongs or blunts.  I usually just bring the pinchy or a little joint to shows and have never had a problem anywhere except for the Varsity Theatre here in MN which DSO stopped playing at for that reason, I beleive.  It was a few years ago now but our group got kicked out for smoking a little one hitter.  Getting in is like going to the airport, I will NEVER go there again.  First Ave (where they kick off the tour) is toatally cool with it.  Never seen anybody get hassled at all and the pat down is minimal, if it happens at all.  Same with The Barrymore in Madison, WI.  I almost feel more at ease partaking in the celebration there than at First Ave which is sayig a lot! Just be careful and don't go overboard.
