9:30 Club - Friday 12/7/13

I left a bit early because we all know the 9:30 club is a shitshow.  No need to belabor it.  But I was really really impressed with the quality of their playing.  Catching the end of a tour is often nice in that sense.  Makes me want to brave it for a bit tomorrow night.  We'll see.  Show was 3/20/91.  I left during Estimated.  Foolish Heart was epic, and I am psyched they played it.

Funny anecdote.  My friend was sitting next to Eaton and Skip at a bar across the street before the show.  Bartender says "Have you guys seen this band before?"   Eaton replies, "Yeah.  They're hit or miss".  Made me laugh.

All out assault 2nite! It was really nice to see the Band havin so much fun out there. BIG smiles, very, very strong showing - played a little longer than the venue was expecting (I think). THICK sound!

Rest now. Filler > Tore Up

My reporter from the field stressed the quality of the Eyes. No surprise there. Glad to hear they didn't slack off for Foolish. I have no love for that venue but sure as hell have a good time every time when I'm out that way. Miss you all!

u left early? blasphemy

Ha.  I know.   Plus I didn't arrive until the end of Althea! I've seen DSO probably close to 100 times, often traveling to do so, and yet I can't hang for the show a mile away from my apartment.  Plus I have skipped some and may again tonight.  Not sure if you have been to 9:30 club but it is a very difficult concert-going experience.  Completely oversold.  Hot.  People bumping into you every 10 seconds.  Rampant drunkenness, constant loud talking.  I understand why DSO plays there.  It is venues like that that allow them to keep touring.  So it is a tradeoff.  But I can only tolerate the experience for so long.  Being wedged into a frat party.  It is meant for the kids, and I could tell they were having fun.  Young crowd.  I doubt I am the only diehard to skip this venue.  We have been complaining for years now.  But I would rather have them play venues like that and have them continue to tour, than not tour at all.  So I get it.  They have to make a living.  I might go tonight, but again won't be for the whole show unless it is less crowded and I can find a piece of real estate I can deal with.  I miss the state theater!

We found a spot where we could dance till our hearts content. If you are looking to get into a primo spot on the floor, most of the things described above are unfortunately unavoidable. For us - The small contingent of talkers were quickly dispatched theough a series of non-confrontational tactics. Things just worked out well and we were lucky to avoid most of the 930 pitfalls.

More thorough review to come - they sparkled last nite :)

I dont think one can bitch enough about the 930 club but I hear ya. I consider the place not worth going to and DSO crushes it there. Just the way it is. We get to pick and choose who we give money to, where we spread love, and where we dance. DSO and their management get to choose where they play. I certainly see their reason in wanting to play to the packed house. Great sound.

Excellent show.  I always get to the venue early and get on the rail.  All the hubbub is behind me and out of my thoughts.  At 61 I can do some mean dancin without much space.  Too much bitching goin on here about how bad the venue is.  Just let the music envelop you.

I hate the way this place is being described but I'm still excited to get out there tonight, because the music always wins out when you let it.

Too bad I missed the Eyes last night, darn. Oh well, I guess the grateful dead must have a couple other good songs in their repetoire... ;)

You do it the right way for sure.  I tried closing my eyes a few times last night and tried to get zen, but I had trouble.  Don't get me wrong.  I have no resentment.  Getting enveloped has been my attitude for years.  It is nice to see so many kids know all the songs, when it is clear they were young kids or even toddlers in those last years the dead toured.  It was easier when I partied.  It isn't the easiest atmosphere to be a sober person.  Enjoy the show!

The sobriety piece......exactly. If I was still imbibing, the 9:30 Club would probably be heaven on earth to me. These days it represents quite the opposite.

I'm sure the band rocked the house. I hope those that were there had a high time all around!

The topic of venues in general, and what people like is a good one. I mean why go to a place where you get bad mojo and don't enjoy it. Certainly does not mean you have any less affection for the band. I've left shows in both Dallas and Springfield, MO because the environment was awful. Ths year was the first in quite some time where I had the opportunity to see shows in 3 different cities. Pagaent, Pier 6, and Simon Estes (Des Moines)...all 3 really nice venues. The Pagaent really has become a nice stop for them. DSO has long avoided an outdoor stop in St. Louis. If promoted properly Jefferson Barracks Park right on the River would work perfectly. El Monstero was wildly successful there. Umphreys did a very successful show at a new venue in Chesterfield. Perhaps Rob, Dino, and Bryan could grease the wheels. We are overdue.

I danced my ass off both nights.    Not much space, but who needs tons of space to spin, jump, kick those feet:}!!!!!!!

930 is a tight place (oversold), but DSO plays their ass off there!!!

All I want to say about first night is that I thought DC was under attack.  The building and my soul shook from all the bombs being dropped.

Absolutely sick-------- the Bass that was produced.  Very impressed and so was everyone else.

Got 2 Althea's back to back:}!!!!!!   Who could ever complain about that?    So glad got good souls to meet in DC.   Yea, I bitch about 930, but two years running and they have blown it out of the water!!!

Still newbie here, but I have never seen so much fun going on stage.  The band was really having a good time, and that is really fun to see!!!!

Thanks DSO!!!   You rock my soul!!!!

1.  Feel Like A Stranger, Cold Rain & Snow, Little Red Rooster, Althea, Black Throated Wind, Tennessee Jed, The Music Never Stopped, Might As Well

2.  Eyes Of The World-> Foolish Heart, Estimated Prophet-> He's Gone-> Drums-> Space-> The Other One-> Wharf Rat-> Sugar Magnolia, E: The Weight

Just to warn you > This is a longish review. Sorry – I just have to get it outta my head J Forewarned.

As I posted a few times, we were able to avoid the 930 trials and tribulations for the most part – that was surprise #1. Surprise #2 was that I would actually swoon over a recreation of a Spring 1991 show. The 1st time around with the GD was indeed a wonderful experience but in the hierarchy of DSO-recreated shows that ‘move my needle’, I have to admit that 1991 is not very high up that ladder. Surprise #3 was Skip. I loved Kevin’s contribution to the DSO sound and was even impressed with Jim Allard’s chops during his brief stay. I had heard that Skip brought the HEAT but was waiting to make my own assumptions about the level of his play. My expectations were shattered……I mean rattled……LITERALLY.

Once the band came out, Eaton thanked us for coming out during the foul weather to enjoy this music together. He then said something like, “This song I think is a good choice for tonight.” I immediately assumed it would be Cold Rain and Snow right as they launched into Stanger. That was a good sign in my eyes. “Ya know it’s gonna get Stanger, so let’s get on with the show….let’s GO!” Off they went indeed!! Great interplay between the band-mates here! Each trading a few volleys before letting the song take them where they wanted to go. Really great build-up….another gear……more build……All of them bubbling to the surface at the same time……BANG!.....Locked into the rousing finish. WOW. Looks of blissful bewilderment as far as they eye could see. Then the Cold Rain and Snow! OK! Very well done and unfortunately more prophetic than I wish was the case. I was beginning to focus inward here which threw me off until…..”She’s been trouble all my life…….BOOOOOOOOMMMM!” Ok, I’m back and Skip was leading the charge!

Rooster was….was…..different. Not always my cup of Tea but they killed it! Wicked slide, lightning licks, charging ahead until the thing just blows its stack. J-e-s-u-s H. What the hells has gotten into these guys – they’re palyin for keeps! The best Rooster I’d ever seen DSO do – by a landslide! Then Althea comes – which was a 1 set highlight for me. Fine vocals from Jeff and perfectly-timed texture from Eaton set the table for this mother. Skip steps in and blows it OUT! I loved the one Kevin did at Jubilee #2 but this one took its place on my mantel.

Ahhh….BT Wind….one of my anthems. Well-timed, tight, and very educational. It delivered the goods! Then a Tennessee Jed romp where RB channeled his inner-Hornsby. Trading ditties with Jeff….cascading higher and higher….. it breaks forward some more….Jeff grabs hold of the thing….shakes it up…its bubbling over….watch out…KABOOM. Hi Skip – I feel you there J

The description of Tennessee Jed was very similar to the progression of the Music Never Stopped we were then treated to. Barraco and Eaton figured prominently and set the stage for liftoff (we missed our lovely Lisa here). Very melodic, then some midi-like threads pop out, THEN they all jump in the middle of it….SMILES…fanning……raw power! As the last breath of the Music was shared, Jeff steps forward with the opening salvo for Might As Well!!! Oh man, I’d like to have that one time more! Smashed it all to pieces people! I spent a few minutes catching my breath, looking around at the soaking-wet shirts and knew that we better wring ‘em out. At this point I was a little confused….90? 91? Paper? Plastic? Words half-spoken and thoughts unclear J

A jazzy start to Eyes greets us for the 2nd set! This thing had a mind of its own and just took right the hell off! The concept of the passage of time was not quite resonating with me although I have to think this thing took 20 minutes + to get through. I’m accustomed to the 73-74 eyes taking that amount of time not the 2.0 version?!? It was like an onion – I guess. They just kept peeling away at it to reveal new layers and subtleties that they would explore. Simply gorgeous!

As euphoric as that Eyes got, the vibe was sustained with a wonderful Foolish Heart! It almost became an extension of the Eyes that preceded it – well at least that’s what I was thinking at the time. Very tight, very bouncy with just enough edge to keep you guessing. Excellent! I needed a breather…..The Estimated that followed wasn’t going to oblige me. Oh well – when in Rome…..This version had a dark, funky, undercurrent that would get whisked away during CALIFORNIA! Only to return any old day. Once we were pleaded with to: ‘don’t worry bout me, no-no, I know where to go’ over came the talkers. NOOOOOOOOO! I kept trying to catch their eyes and smile with a finger in front of my mouth. No good. They then look over at Cosmic Mike who shoots back a bewildered smile that you might see on an ax murderers face. While that didn’t get them to move right away, they shut they’re yappers soon thereafter – thanks Mike!

The dark estimated with subtle Other One hints dissolves into He’s Gone! Very good stuff here – very soulful! This thing got wound up a few times before goin where the wind don’t blow soooooo strange! Wow!!! More soul, happy riffs…..turning darker now…..just like Estimated……Skip stomping around here….heavy steps……rattling cages…….other one hues……drummers beginning to take over. I knew what was coming next…….Drums/Space/Lights/Space/Confusion.

Other One = Highlight! This thing got so wound up I was laughing my face off because they kept waiting for the right entry point. When it all lined up: The brightest lights I’ve seen blinded me just as Skip started it up – like a bull in a China Shop. Really unable to describe it through its conclusion. It was Big, it was Bad, it was Angry, and it wasn’t stopping for anything. In a word: RELENTLESS!

Wharf Rat. Jeff’s vocals just absolutely shined here! Oh man – more than enough soul to go around a few times. So poignant, so honest, so difficult, then….then…..Fly Away! More honesty but with a little hope for better times…..These times would be ushered in with Sugar Mags! Just perfect! WIDE ASS SMILES from the stage, a huge gallop of sound just filling all the spaces at the 930. Everyone’s is leanin into this just about as hard as they can….KABOOOOM! Sweet Pain. BIG Cheers, voice shot, knees fused, complete dehydration.

Tore Up. Yes I was. I would be looking for more of the same tomorrow.
