DSO gets some press on dead.net

Well, it's just David Dodd's "Greatest Stories Ever Told" blog, but still....

http://www.dead.net/features/greatest-stories-ever-told/greatest-stories-ever-told-feel-stranger

The specific quote:

Oddly, one of the most memorable performances I heard of “Stranger” was not at a Dead show, but at a Dark Star Orchestra show. In fact, the first DSO show I ever attended, at a little club in Santa Cruz in 1997 or so. They kicked off with “Feel Like a Stranger,” and my jaw hit the floor. It was such a good feeling to be standing in the middle of that sound again.

As to this blog entry in general, the interpretation of Stranger as a metaphor of the Boys on stage, and Garcia "shooting a look" from across the stage, is an interesting take.  I think he gets a bit too literal though equating The Wheel smoking around midnight and all that with the Dead's set, however.

nevermind...if u look at the list i posted there's no Stranger there! interesting Dodd says "1997 or so.." because if it really was at a "little club in Santa Cruz" then its 2004 at the Catalyst..DSO played Santa Cruz 1999,2000,2001,2002,2003 all of them do NOT include Feel like a Stranger.. gotta be in '04 the orginal set,

2nd set

Samson, Catfish John, Tom Thumb, Stranger> Eyes> Drumz> Wharf Rat> Wheel> Good Lovin> Bid You Goodnight

You are right, Torin, the '04 show was the first Feel Like A Stranger in Santa Cruz.  The earliest version in CA was at the Fillmore in SF 8/6/99.

Just curious, has anyone tried my setlist (Starbase)  There is also a link on the navigation bar.  Basically it is the same info as DSO's but you can search and filter it to get just what you are looking for.

Interesting.  He does say they "kicked off with Stranger", so even the '04 show doesn't fit the bill.  Perhaps he was thinking of the '99 Fillmore?  Did that open the show?  Confusing '97 with '99 AND Santa Cruz with San Francisco in one fell swoop though is a bit much.

Show: 1438 08/04/2007 Dunegrass Festival, Empire, MI

Setlist: 08-04-2007 Original Setlist
1: Scarlet> St Stephen> Stranger, Dark Star> Other One> Drums> Space> Other One> Wheel> SOTM> Miracle> Terrapin> Saturday Night
Encore: Ripple

I was like "oooooooooh a Grateful Dead cover band!  Meh."  My buddy Dan was admonishing me for being such a huge fan of the Dead and for being all high and mighty when it came to my view of any attempt to recrate the music by somebody not named Phil Lesh.  For whatever reason, I was totally unplugged and had not even heard of DSO - I know, Iknow.

Dan was determined to make sure I was in the most appropriate frame of mind once the band came out.  He kept laughing and saying..."Just wait dood....just wait!  I cannot wait to see the look on your face....hahahahahaha!"  Later on - I'm lookin at my friend (with kaleidescope vision for some reason) who is even more giddy with anticipation when the band comes out.

Some short little tunings...then......BANG!  Speechless.  Dans smile explodes in a burst of silver confetti.....he floats over to me and says, "How does it feel to finally be back to this place again?"  All I could muster was, "Howwww..........?"

I spent this whole set laughing, screaming, crying, and dancing.  A voice inside my head kept saying, "Home."

That Dunegrass festie was special, all right. Talk about perfect set, setting, and company! Plus lots of good music, to include Cornmeal at the top of their game. Pivoting from one stage to the other to catch them...it was like a mini-Ledges, with a huge lake down the street instead of a quarry down the beach. And the people there could not be beat. You picked a keeper for your first show, buddy!

Twas a pity this was the only dunegrass DSO played...agree with the mini ledges comment. Besides Cornmeal and DSO the additional lineup was stellar. Sweet first show Tea. I remember this as my Holiday Inn festival as I scurried each evening to Traverse City to patch my bones so I could keep truckin the next day at the dunes and lake. My first "festival" since the Alpine Valley debacles and debauchery thorough out  the 80's.
