Forum MVP John A Posted June 24, 2013 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 24, 2013 6/18/74 Louisville, KY. Just to have Morning Dew in an encore slot says volumes, but to have it in the discussion of the greatest Dews ever? I mean, that's just a slam dunk. Are there even any other nominations? Maybe Red Rocks 7/8/78 due to the "triple play" element of it (Terrapin/Saturday Night/Werewolves)? At some point though the concept of encore bleeds into the concept of mini 3rd set. Or perhaps Dark Star at the Greek 7/13/84? Sure, it was a bust out of sorts, but it's hardly a special Dark Star once one gets past the oddity of it. I guess it should be in the conversation however. Does anything else come to mind?

Forum MVP John A Posted June 24, 2013 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 24, 2013 Little Boy, Fair enough - Englishtown certainly deserves mention. Tea, I still submit it's that easy - a testament to how good the Dew is from 6/18. I just don't want to go anointing anything without first having some civilized discourse. And there's a few Satisfaction->Baby Blue double encores that weren't chump change. Frost '82 comes to mind.

Forum MVP Tea Posted June 25, 2013 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 25, 2013 Discourse?.......Ok. While a pedestrian song that got played to death, the US Blues from Cameron Indoor Standium on 4.12.78 certianly has legendary status in my eyes. Thanks to the facilities management team at Dook for making this happen. I really like the Hampton Attics alot too. That one is on my list. I just keep coming back to.............Englishtown! Brian NJ
You guys obviously were not in VA 10/9/89. This was a great Attics not played in about 18 years. I was inside watching them sound check Dark Star and Attics so I was pretty sure after playing D S that night we would get Attics. Just before the encore I turned to the couple behind me, started shaking and with a far off spaced look said "I feel an Attics coming on", just then the first notes rang through the air and they said "dude you are cosmically connected" I like fucking with people

Forum MVP John A Posted June 25, 2013 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 25, 2013 My favorite Attics (obviously lacking the breakout element) is 3/30/90 Nassau. But that's an awesome story, Brian. And the finale of that Duke US Blues is indeed outrageous, with Garcia officially catching air. See? Now we're talkin'...but has anyone actually put their ears to Louisville recently?
Forum MVP Dead duck Posted June 25, 2013 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 25, 2013 Gave it a listen, and while i can only speak from a recording stand point never having seen the boys live, i think that dew may have caused me to have a complete meltdown if i'd have been there. Love hearing the different stories though. Love that cameron u.s. blues too. IM GONNA STEAL YOUR WIFE!!!
sonomajon
My first NYE and it felt like an encore....12-31-81 Encore aka Electric-3: Dark Star-> Bertha-> Good Lovin', It's All Over Now Baby Blue*
Forum MVP John A Posted June 26, 2013 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 26, 2013 It's sad how NYE slowly but surely lost its traction over the years. From breakfast at daybreak and amazing 3rd sets, to a run of the mill double encore the penultimate year, to just Knockin' for the last time around (12/31/91). Forum MVP Tea Posted June 26, 2013 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 26, 2013 9.3.88 Ripple encore certainly sent the Cap Crap Center into a tizzy. 'Average' show and Ripple was not played with quite the amount of soul you would expect given the song and its 8 year hiatius, but historically significant nonetheless. Just think about those poor souls who bailed before the end of OMSN only to discover that Ripple came on after.
