Scott Timmins!
With DSO, you're going to hear and see a Dead band that's tight as all hell, and more than willing to let loose and walk the tightrope on the jams. . The scene is laid back, with all levels of freakery. Wander up close to the band and boogie down with the dancers, or hang back and enjoy the terrific sound system. . They always start on time, and the level of musicianship is top notch. I've seen them at least a dozen times, and have yet to get a "bad show".(knock on wood!) And I'm not the first person to suggest that DSO plays many Dead songs better than the Dead ever could.

Late to the party
In regards to DSO- don't go in hoping for anything because you wont get it, guarantee it. In regards to Furthur- I used to think that it was about John, especially when the band first formed, but I'm more and more unimpressed with his playing. I think he sounded way better 3 years ago when he played with DSO. I think(and this is contrary to how I felt in the past..) that it's all about Phil, Chimenti, and Russo. Those three drive the band. Chimenti takes as many solos as John and many of them are more exciting to me. At some point John decided(or was told) to stop playing 16th notes. Additionally it sounds to my ears that he is trying too hard when he sings. Looking forward to whatever he does next, I'll always be a fan of his. What he is doing next already started. The John K band is excellent and John's playing when not constrained by his situation is excellent. DSO, Furthur and the John K band are at or near the top of my must see list when they are near near the Washington/Baltimore area
gnuisance
Ok, after having a chance to digest a little bit I wanted to offer some thoughts on this show. Keep in mind that I never saw the dead live and have only seen furthur once. I have however listened to about every dead / rat dog / furthur / DSO show that I can get my hands on and I feel I have a pretty good handle on the subtleties of the music. - I was insanely impressed with the first set. It went on and on and on and had so many awesome moments. The highlight for me being the transition jam on china > rider. - I was lucky enough to get a spot up front near Jeff Mattson's wife Randi. She offered a lot of interesting perspective on the show and the band which was a very cool addition to my first DSO experience. I hope to run into her again at a later show. - Being a sober individual I was very grateful to stumble into the Wharf Rats meeting in between the two sets. - In the second set the band went back and forth between Eyes of the World and The Other One - playing a few riffs of one song and then BAM switching and then switching back. That was amazing. - The new bassist Skip was good but I have to imagine there was some drop off from the previous guy with it being his first show. All in all I had a great experience and loved being able to be up close. I can't wait to see them again.

At least he will have the Jubilee as a great send off!!
