First Show

I will be at the Montclair NJ show on saturday and I am pretty pumped. I'm a neophyte when it comes to the dead / furthur / DSO. I went to furthur in AC a couple weeks ago and had an awesome experience.

How does a DSO show compare? I've heard some people say that DSO is better than furthur which seems crazy.

Will anybody else be at this show? What kind of set do you expect to hear?

I like Furthur but am head-over heels in love/lust with DSO.

As I have stated before, Furthur can tend to feel like GD-Lite to these ears.  They often play it safe and would rather have a tight jam than take too many chances.

DSO is a bit tighter but in addition, they will and do take it to the limit and beyond time after time.  They just let it all hang out!  Period.

Not a fair fight.  DSO hands down.

It just seems strange that a tribute band could play the songs better than a band that has two original members of the dead. I guess those guys aren't really what they used to be. Either way I'm pumped for the show. Thanks for your replies

Why? Jerry is gone....

...and Jeff Mattson is my Jerry.

Furthur does bring the scene, the hugeness, and the dancers. DSO brings the music.

but to each his/her own...

This is a DSO fan forum so it's natural to think we are heavily biased.

I love Phil & Bobby and respect the hell out of their longevity and that they are still gettin it done after all these years.  It is amazing what they can still do and JK certainly brings some additional talent into the fold.

Based on the aspects of this music that trip my trigger, DSO just freaking kills it.  Critical Mass - pure and simple.

Have a blast on Saturday - buckle up that chin strap if a pillow is unavailable :)

I've been listening to DSO shows on archive.org and I am very impressed. There is a scarlet fire from 3/30/13 Ogden Theater that rivals some of the best late 70s versions of that jam by the dead, which is very high praise obviously. Really hoping to hear a nice long Morning Dew at the saturday show.

DSO is better than furthur.  DSO sounds how the Dead would sound if they played the 80's and 90's shows with the same fire they played in the 70's.  And with DSO you get to hear how the dead would sound like in their prime in modern day.  Furthur does their own thing.  they dont duplicate the exact sound of the dead like DSO.  Plus I think several in DSO are better musicians than guys in the dead.  Rob B.  is an insane keyboardist.  Rob E. plays the early 70s stuff better than bobby did.  Plus you never have to worry about any in the band being so drugged out that they play a junky show.  Ive never heard a DSO show that wasnt top notch!  BTW Im not ragging the Dead lol, but they had periods where individual members were just there going through the motions.

Dso is way better for me but it wasn't always that way.

When Furthur played its first run at the fox in Oakland in sep 2009 ( wow, almost 4 years ago), other than set 2 of night 1 I didn't like it and I was done. I did keep up on the with what they did that December/jan and I listened to some of it and I decided to give them another chance. I went down to Florida for two amazing nights in feb 2010. They had clearly meshed. I then got lucky and caught 4 shows in a row in march of 2010. Chicago and Bloomington,co and holy shit I struck pay dirt. 2 of those shows (1 in Colorado, 1 in Chicago) are still considered to be 2 of the top shows Furthur has ever played. They are at least in the top 10 show based on things I have read over at the rat dog board.

That's about it for me and great furthur shows I caught. 5-8 shows since then? Red rocks was worth the trip but by fall 2010 I was becoming quite bored with furthur. I had seen dso that summer at gratefulfest 2010 and I liked Jeff but I wasn't sold just yet. Fall 2010 I caught 4 dso Midwest shows that we're all brilliant. I knew then dso made me so much happier. I've seen 3 furthur shows since fall 2010. I'm not gonna travel for them anymore and they seem done with the Midwest.

I will travel for dso. It's been a couple of years since I have got on a plane to see them. I need to rectify that.

Anyway, I didn't want to bash furthur and I think I did that but i do like dso a lot more. I think u will be blown away. Enjoy your first show. I'm excited for you.

DSO is a true old school Grateful Dead experience. Furthur (for me, OK) is like a reunion tour for a classic rock band. It's great for nostalgia and all, it feels good and fun, it's awesome to see Phil and Bob up there kicking ass at 70yrs old, and I still love ol JK. If my goal is to have a true GD experience (and it is) then it's a no brainer, DSO all the way. I never got to see the Dead in the 70's, but I've seen DSO play the 70's and flippin loved it! Hell the 69 show was even better... You WILL NOT get that with Furthur. I am not saying what you get with Furthur is bad by any stretch, it's simply different. I can see 2-3 DSO shows for the price of one Furthur show..... hummmmm, 10-12 hrs. of mind bending GD or 3 hrs. near studio like Furthur. Both good, but me thinks one is clearly better. Rock on bro, you'll love it!!

DSO is better than Furthur. I recommend you bring a pillow to the show and put it on the floor in front of you. That will help protect your jaw when it drops.

It's not a question of better because that's all relative to the listener. IMO, what you get with Furthur is 2 of the "Boys" continuing to do what they love for as long as they can keep going. They sound excellent. They are tight all the way around. Biggest difference I feel is that everything is a little slower. They are playing tighter and far more together, but it's a little slower, which is about as understanding as anything could ever be considering the history of the GD.

Now with DSO(and I definitely agree with the "watch out for falling jaw" recommendation because it took me 2 songs to get mine back up the first time I saw them) what you almost get is the entire gauntlet of songs, styles, tempos, growth, etc but you rolled their ages back to 1970ish. Which, given their history, puts us at around 1986 in GD years, if that makes sense. The musicianship is off the charts. They are so tight,, together and just fucking bringing it every night. No let downs, and everyone here knows that by 1986 there were plenty of letdowns, but there was a whole lotta magic. The growth of this band, from when it took me 2 songs to get my jaw up off the floor, to what I saw at the last tour closer in Seattle is mindboggling.

I'll see Furthur every single time they come near me but if I was going to follow someone around, you will get more magic with DSO, IMHO.

Guys thank you very much for your replies. You have gotten me way more excited for this show! Really hoping for a mid 70s show with some spacey dark star / morning dew. Would also love to hear Jack Straw, Loser, St. Stephen, China > Rider (which they do amazingly well based on what I have seen on youtube!!) etc...

I will post a reply with my experience on monday. If you are at the show send me an email and maybe we can meet up and chat - hardy.wiedemann@gmail.com

Furthur does bring the scene, the hugeness, and the dancers. DSO brings the music.

Good concise summary, with an economy of words.  Pretty much says it all.  I would only add that Furthur does have a potent weapon, and that would be Phil Lesh, but he can't compensate for the overall sluggishness of the sound.

Some of us still believe that JK is the most potent of weapons.  I would urge the neophyte to gather his own intel and make his own decisions.  There are no better or worse.  Things just are.  Some like apples and some like oranges.  Some like both.  I am biased and I have  preference, but my reality in no way defines yours.

In regards to DSO- don't go in hoping for anything because you wont get it, guarantee it.

In regards to Furthur- I used to think that it was about John, especially when the band first formed, but I'm more and more unimpressed with his playing. I think he sounded way better 3 years ago when he played with DSO. I think(and this is contrary to how I felt in the past..) that it's all about Phil, Chimenti, and Russo. Those three drive the band. Chimenti takes as many solos as John and many of them are more exciting to me. At some point John decided(or was told) to stop playing 16th notes. Additionally it sounds to my ears that he is trying too hard when he sings. Looking forward to whatever he does next, I'll always be a fan of his.

Let's just say I have traveled to Colorado and Jamaica from NY for DSO but didn't travel 20 miles when Furthur was around.  Saw them 3 x's in 2010 and I can't get past the way I used to enjoy the Grateful Dead in the 80's.  BUT totally think DSO is way better than many of my GD shows I went to.  THEY NEVER DISAPPOINT   :)

Peace

Looked at the set list this morning. I'm sure you got a smoker for your first show! See you on the bus!

Peace,

Joe
