BASSIST KEVIN ROSEN LEAVING DARK STAR ORCHESTRA NO FULL-TIME REPLACEMENT IN PLACE

Recommended Posts

One of JamBase users' most tracked bands, Dark Star Orchestra, faces a major transition as bassist Kevin Rosen is departing the tribute band that recreates Grateful Dead concerts in their entirety. It's going to be “bassist-by- committee” to start as Skip Vengelas will play the role of Phil Lesh for DSO's next five shows, May 9 – 14. Rosen will then return for the remainder of May and his final show with the band June 1 at Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom in New Hampshire. Then the bass duties will be transferred over to Jim Allard while DSO begins the search for a new full-time replacement.

DSO's lineup has always been in flux, with the most impactful personnel change coming when John Kadlecik departed to devote his full attention to Furthur and his own band.

Isn't April fools on 4/1!?! Haven't looked around for the story yet but if this indeed true, I'm shocked. My hope is the circumstances are professional and not personal.

Stay tuned I guess. Wow.

Oh my….

Not knowing the circumstances, I hope nothing I write is taken out of context.

I typically like to stand in front of Kevin a few rows back on the floor.  After Phil sat in w/the band, I thought Kevin really kicked it up dropping bombs.

As if I wasn’t already looking forward to DE on the 16th & Penn’s Peak, I certainly will be shouting thanks.

A message from Rosen to his fans reads:

Dear friends,

After all my years of touring with Dark Star Orchestra, I find myself in need of an extended break from life on the road.  In addition, my mother’s declining health makes it even more important to be home at this time.

For the first five shows of our May tour,  our good friend, Skip Vengelas will be filling the bass role.  I will be returning for the rest of the tour, culminating with my last performance at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom on June 1.  Please know that I am leaving with a heavy heart.

_I would like to thank all of the fans for your support throughout the years.   I would also like to express my gratitude to all the members of the DSO family.   Over the years,  you have become my family.  It has been one of the great pleasures of my life to be a part of DSO and I know that I am going to miss it.  I will surely miss my band mates, all of my friends in the audience and the many great people I have met along the way._

Rest assured that the train will keep on rolling and the bass position will be in capable hands for years to come.

May all of your days be good ones!

Peace –

Kevin Rosen

No Doubt - Here's to Kevin and is incalculable contributions to this band, this music, and to the many fans of DSO.  It just won't be the same without him but it is comforting to know that he will be able to be there for his mom - she needs him.

The Jubilee is going to be bittersweet for sure.  The Wheel keeps turnin....

Always love being front and center for Kevin. The syracuse show last year was great when I was trying to take a picture after a few too many beers and Kevin was laughing away at me failing to do so. Quality memories for sure.

to bad that didn't happen when that picture of you was snapped :)

I've known about Kevin's departure for a while, but it really didn't sink in until now... Kevin is by far my favorite person onstage when DSO plays.. When I dance upfront, I usually try to be near Kevin, as we will occasionally make faces at each other while they preform.. Kevin is  GREAT person, and I wish him nothing but the best.. I don't know Jim Allard, but I do know Skip, and he's a great guy and a great bassist.

Kevin is DA MAN, and I hope with all my heart that his mom does well in her road to recovery... Gonna miss that man so much, but life goes on...

Kevin, you've always seemed a sweet soul to me, the kind of person I'd like to go fishing with. I hope the very best for you and family. You've done a helluva service to this community and it won't be forgotten. Can't wait to absorb some bombs from you at the jubilee!!
