GD History Question > Terrapin

I know this is an inane query but no deadbase or equivalent so.....

So, I think the closest the GD ever came to playing the entire Terrapin Suite was 3/18/1977 which included Alahambra which I think was the only time played.  Is this right?  Furthur performances don't count :)

Dicks Picks 3 > 5/22/1977 contains one of my favorite GD passages of all time:  Estimated > Eyes > Wharf Rat > Terrapin > Morning Dew.  I noticed that the Terrapin on this nite only included the Terrapin Station part, excluding the Lady with a Fan passage.  Have there ever been any shows (other than 5/22/77) where the GD broke up/sandwiched, or performed just a portion of Terrapin?  If so, I need to get my hands/ears on it :)

I think I am aware of all the Terrapin encores (Red Rocks, Englishtown, Albany) are there any others?  My favorite version of all time 10/18/1978.  Is there one you think would give this a big run for its money?

Ruidentary stuff for most of you I'm sure.  Any input here would be appreciated :)

Not rudimentary for me but I'm sure someone much more knowledgable can answer your questions. However, I can't think of any show where they "sandwiched" Terrapin. I would be very Interested if they ever did. Also, I am particularly fond of the very first playing of Terrapin on Feb 26 at the Swing Auditorium.

Tea,

To my knowledge you are correct.  Winterland was the only Alhambra, and Hollywood, Fl was the only time without Lady With A Fan.  Terrapin has never been broken apart, nor has any more of the Suite been played beyond the Alhambra night.  The big deal 3/18/77 is not the extension of Terrapin, however; in my mind it's the Caution jam in Not Fade Away.  Talk about incendiary.

5/7/77 Boston. I believe it was the Set II Opener!!!!! Whole show sets up Cornell really nicely.

Sorry, should have mentioned that 5/7/77 is my favorite Terrapin, not one that was broken up. I know, off topic. My bad.

3.20.77 Winterland, 4.30.77 Palladium , 11.2.77 Toronto , 12.29.77 Winterland  3.28.91 Nassau those are all Terrapin encores. TeaforTexas which Albany show?

Terrapin 101

..like a lot of tunes in the live repertoire it took a few shows/weeks/months to find its most regular place ,, like we see with Terrapin the first 6 live performances are all special.. the first live performance being the only time it opened a show ..the second (2.27 UCSB) goes into an awesome second set closing MorningDew*.. the third is the attempt at the closing, the only Alhambra.. the fourth is the last time it will ever appear in a first set again, making only two first set terrapins .. the fifth it is tried for the first time as an encore ..the sixth (4.22.spectrum) is the only time it ever closed a second set ..from here it bunkers down as a second set -pre drum, in late 70s going in to Playin more than anything else..then in 80s going directly into drums was its most common home

*4 of 5 morning dews of 77 are terrapin>dew, the only one that is not = cornell 5.8.77

Thanks for Terrapin 101 Primer.  It's one class that I could see myself being early to , sittin in the front row, and chattin with the prof after class :)

I meant Nassau when I said Albany in 1991.  Ooops.  I will make sure to take in some of those other encore shows in addition to the show closer in Philly as well as the other Terrapin > Dew's in 77.

Thanks for sharin your considerable knowledge.  Wow!

LOL that's an awesome admission. I only got to see the band from 87-95 so I've always wondered what fans going to shows in 77 thought of the new material. I wonder if a lot of people listened to Estimated Prophet and Terrapin and were like...what is this disco shit? Play truckin'! Play Casey Jones!!

Regarding the Nassau encore, something happened before the drums (forget at the moment) causing them it cut it short (Victim->Foolish->Women->Drums).  So they finished the pre-drums segment as the encore.

As for the Englishtown encore, Phil prefaced with something like "and now, from our new album, currently on shelves"…almost as corny as Weir's introduction of Touch of Grey from Hartford 4/4/88 – “And now, our top 10 single, A Touch Of Grey!”

Torin, cool stat about all ’77 Dews but Cornell coming out of Terrapin.  I hadn’t made that connection.

In a way, yes. Steve's right - they did quickly grow on us.

And Tor - hope to see you and the family soon!

Makes total sense. If what you knew and enjoyed of the Dead was pre-Blues for Allah, I think the mid to late 70s stuff would have seemed a radical departure. And for some at first...perhaps not too pleasant. But if you were lucky enough to see them live during that period, I'm guessing most everyone jumped on that train pretty quick. When I saw them in the late 80s, we were always hungry for a Terrapin or an Estimated Eyes. In a lot of ways, they became more signature Dead than the early stuff.

And Fire on the Mountain, of course, is so quickly enrapturing that I would be surprised if any Head from back then would have balked.

Just to illustrate how diverse we deadheads are, I fell in love with Terrapin(Inspiration as we called it) from the get go...4-27-77 was my first and there were several to follow that spring of 77...To me it was Garcia/Hunter at their finest. An incredible story with twists and turns that culminated in a complete earth shattering triumphant ending.

Shakedown was another one ,"what the hell is this shit, disco dead all the way ,a song created to fit the times I would think.. the peak of the disco era.

Too true... Shakedown is the epitome of disco Dead. But it's hard for me to imagine Deadheads not just going crazy for it the moment it was brought out. It's a long way from Workingman's Dead though. I imagine there we a few diehards who thought they were witnessing heresy.

I was defnintely one of those die hards (saw Dead 6 times in 78 in Chicago when I was 16). I absolutely did not like Shakedown when it came out. Took me awhile to buy in.  Love it now of course, right up there with some of their best tunes I think.

Hey that's awesome you're honest about it. Frankly I might have been there right along with you. It's hard to tell. But now the song seems integral to what makes the Dead. It actually has taken me a while to fully embrace lazy lightning into supplication which is of the same time period. Honestly DSO has helped me to reform new opinions of old songs I had thrown off.

I almost never liked some of Bobby's stuff like Little Red Rooster and LL Into SUP and now just love those songs after seeing them performed brilliantly live. The Supplication jam that DSO played just recently in Eugene knocked my socks off.

And yeah, when I talk to friends who aren't into the Dead, they will almost always say except those one or two albums Workingman's Dead and American Beauty. They hate the long noodle jams and extended prog rock that the band got into...just the simple well done folky tunes.

I get that...but come on...shakedown? That opening chord played at full volume while you are peaking on Cubensis will change your life.
