12/19/78 (Tue)  Mississippi Coliseum - Jackson, MS Set 1: Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo > Franklin's Tower, Minglewood Blues, They Love Each Other, Me & My Uncle > Big River, Loser, El Paso, Row Jimmy, Lazy Lightning > Supplication

Set 2: Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain, Promised Land, Stagger Lee, Truckin' > Drums > The Other One > Stella Blue > Not Fade Away > Around and Around, E: Casey Jones

There was a lot going on...

It sure is hot as hell in that Venue....and an odd mix of people for sure. Some pure heads, lovin' the music, and some uptight Socal types who had no problem pointing at and talking about us dancing crazy like....but a super groovy venue at the same time.

The first set started out with an absolute bang, Half Step>Franklins, one of my favorite pairings to start a show. If you weren't ready to start dancing right away, well, you got ready quick! Some nights it takes a few songs or a set to get going....not tonight. Minglewood wasn't exactly a break of any kind, but we were already lubed up and down to get down to this fun, raunchy tune. TLEO was a welcome break from the madness....I personally love this song, though a friend of ours (who no longer posts here) isn't terribly fond of this one....when it started I couldn't help but give her a silly grin. And it was a wonderful version, Barraco and Mattson each courting us through their melodic takes of this tune. One of my favorite things in Grateful Dead(and music in general) is the old Keyboard to Guitar handoff- like Jerry, Mattson always seems to thrive off this interaction. Back to the madness with some cowboy tunes...by this point I'm completely soaked, sweat pouring out of my hair and into my eyes...feeling a bit like I might just collapse, we were treated to a fine version of Loser to bring us back down to Earth- somewhat. El paso....man, I feel like I saw this one like 4 times on this tour....no complaints here though as I love this song. A fun story to act out in dance, a good chance to double twist when you hit the air(or wait, maybe that was the next song...)...Lazy Lightening>Supplication....this one will always remind of Ms. Supplicated Thunder. Like our relationship, this song started with a bang, was ferocious, and came to a crashing to a halt...and we have setbreak!

This is where, as Chuck refers to it, "a lot was going on..." began. A friend of ours who doesn't get to shows too often(but loves the music) got a bit mentally separated from himself and was unable to re-enter the show for a bit. I was unaware of this at first and went back inside. I was dancing to Scarlet Begonias when somewhere near the end of the lyrical part of the song Chuck waved to me to come over to where he was. I figured he was bringing me to some better dance space or something but when I reached him he asked me, much to my surprise, "are you willing to miss the Fire on the Mountain to help a friend?". For me there was no thought here(though Fire is one of my absolute favorite tunes to dance to), and I obliged. Long story short, we talked our friend back to his senses....there is a lot more to this, but really too much to even begin elaborating on it. So we essentially missed the Fire(and as many of you know, Chucky Vegas loves him a Scarlet>Fire), but the music was fairly loud in the parking lot and we went ahead and raged it out there(while simultaneously finding the right things to say to help guide a temporarily lost soul back to his higher self)...sure we looked like freaks, but....well....we are! And damn proud of it, so laugh it up, point your fingers, cause we don't care....we love this music, we love to dance....WE ARE THE MUSIC. And the music is us. We made it back in for the very tail end of Fire and found a nice, fairly empty corner of the venue to take in the show. From here on out, our buddy supremely enjoyed the music. I think it was a valuable experience for all of us and I wouldn't change it for anything. Love is real....having the opportunity to share this Love with someone else who in the moment needed it dearly was truly an honor.

Anyway, back to the music....

....and it was funny because the second set essentially re-started after the Fire! As I mentioned before the Stagger Lee was truly something. An odd slot for it, but I often find that when songs are placed oddly like this that new light can be shed upon them. Had tons of room in our corner to dance it was awesome to be able to run around, jump, and get really weird with it. I had a moment of slight frustration when I asked some impolite youngins' to be quite or take their conversation elsewhere during Stella, to which they oh-so-rudely declined(shit, maybe it was me being rude...Idk...)...but nothing to get hung up on. The funny thing is that for the rest of the show they were totally into it and dancing. I don't get this mentality...."oh, slow quiet song, time to talk at full volume'....once again though, who is to say what is right and wrong. I am learning as a person to be more accepting of others, and while it is difficult in these times the song remains the same....you can always move somewhere else, which I did for a minute. Didn't mess up my night, I had a transDancedental experience, one that I will NEVER forget.

Kind of a long review, but you didn't have to read it and if you made it this far...well...good for you. Kind of feel like i'm coping Mason's Child's review style a bit, but, like our dance moves, we all borrow from each other and I find Rick to be a very good writer. Too bad he doesn't do more with it :)

Ahhhh, bliss <3

Thanks, RT for clearing that up - the setlist on DSO's site was a little confusing.

I am told the filler was Box, Positively 4th Street and Werewolves, all featuring Nicky Sanders who played with DSO to begin the second set at the El Rey.  Sounds like an awesome show.

Things got a little off track with this thread. It started life as a review of last year's show, which was a fine '78 indeed. The Scarlet>Fire stands out in my memory. Then it resurfaced as the initial discussion of this year's Canyon Club dance festie, which was a one drummer so far as I could tell from first hand experience.

What I do in these situations is listen to the music play.
