Sun,

Compare a 2nd or even a 1st gen soundboard to the sound contained here and you will have no comparison. While there are releases from time to time where I could put on my copy of the show and think, "eh, a bit of an upgrade but pretty similar" that is very much not the case here.

The separation of instruments (spaciousness), tonality, and utter lack of a noise floor are stunning. Those are a few of the things I mean by "sonics."

BTW, the March 1980 Capitol Theater Garcia Live Volume 1 showed up a day after this. Haven't given it a spin yet, but dear god, when it rains it pours!

Thanks bro.......makes a lot of sense to me!!! I thought i was being spoiled with what quality music I have. YOur telling me there is another level-----well my friend---thank you---I think its time for me to explore!!!

To further elaborate on "sonic" differences, try comparing an average MP3 sound file to the same music rendered from a well mixed CD such as the one the OP mentioned. Night and day difference in terms of everything from sonic frequency range to spaciousness.

The sound can always be a little better, right? I'll take the convenience of the IPOD any day over a massive collection of cds/several terrabytes of hardrive space. Sorry sound buffs, I just don't find it to be worth it. Now if the made an IPOD with sufficient space that played flacs or shns, that I would be into.

They do have the 160gb iPod click wheel but it doesn't play flacs or shns. I never see apples business model allowing them ever.

I dont like mp3s so far now I convert to apple lossless and still keep my original flacs and shns and CDs. I think a standard show is about a gig, so approximately 160 shows. That's a lot of high quality shows in a pocket.

Yea I wish I could just dump my flacs into my iPod, but for now this is the (best?) solution for someone who hates mp3s but wants and needs a portable player.

Ya know I read my post and realized it's kind of like saying, "I buy PBR because it's cheap and therefore I can drink more", which is so not like me. I keep trying to make rationalizations in my head but it still comes back to the same thing- that i'm settling for lower quality. But here I am listening to a Dick's Picks(31 I think? roosevelt 74) on my ipod through a guitar amp and it sounds damn good to me. Cymbals are the most noticeable difference. Oh well.

While that seems so benign a statement it can haunt those who are taken down by the audiophile virus. It was my mantra as I chased sytems upgrades, small and large, for over a decade. Having kids got me off the merry-go-round (and onto another). Since 1997, I have one new piece of gear, and it's a power amplifier out of necessity (old unit's circuit board melted and a new prototype amp was offered in a deal too good to pass up).

On a another note, little boy found is correct about vinyl, which pains me because when I got into taping I bought other kinds of playback gear and audio media, all at the sacrifice of collecting records and outfitting a good turn table.

Why do I not know about this?  It's not for sale on Dead.net like all previous Jerry Band stuff.  Is MusicToday the right place to buy it?

Hmmmm.  Now that I think about it the keystone box was also sold somewhere else.
