Forum MVP nwnj steve Posted January 30, 2013 Forum MVP Report Share Posted January 30, 2013 Steve, The box is akin to a home wi-fi device, except that rather than plug into your DSL or cable modem it connects to the internet via a 3G or 4G network. It creates a local area wireless network, which you would configure the wi-fi on your laptop to look for. Here is more info: http://www.verizonwi...e=products_mifi FWIW, you can also have an iphone set up as a "mobile hotspot", wherein it works in the same capacity. That is also an extra monthly charge from your provider. I set it up for a month last summer when traveling to visit my mother (who has no internet) and it worked great. Of course, if you're looking to stream video then bandwidth demands go up in a hurry. And as I alluded to previously, there can be reception issues deep inside buildings. For example, my cell phone (Verizon) works great in my office, but those with AT&T service need to be closer to an outside window or they risk interruption. If a Deadicated soul were to be on tour and doing this right, a sound board patch would perhaps be in order. Certainly the band wouldn't want anything but the best sounding stream possible! I guess using my fone would freakin use a ton of bandwidth up? I pay for 2 gigs a month so I would have to use something else ? am I understanding this right John?thanks
Forum MVP John A Posted January 30, 2013 Forum MVP Report Share Posted January 30, 2013 Steve, Let's say you wanted to upload data to ustream at 512kbit/sec, which would be absolute bare bones for audio and video. If my math is right that means a 3 hour show would necessitate 5.5 gigs. A new plan would indeed be in order.
Forum MVP nwnj steve Posted January 31, 2013 Forum MVP Report Share Posted January 31, 2013 john I just realized my new phone has the option that I can search for a hot spot like you stated prior and then it wouldn t matter correct?
Forum MVP John A Posted January 31, 2013 Forum MVP Report Share Posted January 31, 2013 Correct, but that assumes the venue has a hot spot that your phone could latch on to. Could be more miss than hit. My scenario entailed your phone BEING a hot spot.

Stargazer
a few thoughts from someone who records.... 1. tapers...the word is kinda exctinct as nobody uses tapes anymore...its all digital, files etc....so im not sure what to call us besides those under the mic stands...or geeks in the dark watching shiny lights on small digital items while warding off drunk and misaligned concert goers......either way... 2. what do folks who record do with the files they have saved from live shows? its kind of an odd hobby for sure with some guys consistently uploading everything they record while some don't upload anything at all. this could be for various different reasons from not having the time at home to indulge in it, not being satisfied with quality or content, or the simple idea that going to a show always involves recording, kinda like going to bed always involves sleep, its just part of their dna. one thing a person needs to understand, especially in todays world of instant gratification, is that the person recording is doing it for his own pleasure first and everyone elses second and I don't mean to be greedy or exclusive while saying that. its just reality. 3. streaming: ive not attempted it but after many a conversation with folks who have it seems to be fairly simple in execution and fairly cumbersome with equipment. first off youll need to get the basics for recording including a mic stand, cables, a recording device and possibly a pre-amp. then you will need a laptop or a tablet that can obtain a wifi connection through a local provider or a mobile air card from a service provider with plenty of mega space to transmit with. if you would like to look into a website with plenty of folks with insight got to www.taperssection.com and start asking questions. the "under the mic stand" brigade is usually pretty helpful especially to new folks in the game cause lets face it, the older we get the less "tapers" we see...we need new recruits daily! wich brings me to number 4>>> 4. if your someone who goes to lots of shows and wants to hear what he or she is listening to later on..I always liked the idea of getting in the car afterwards and cranking up fresh music....go get some gear and start up...the website I mentioned above has a section called yard sale for guys who getting out of the hobby or have extra stuff they will let go of for a fair price way below market value....you don't need to Invest heavily unless that's what you want to do.... basically what im saying here is quit twirlin in the corner and be of some use for the good of all mankind! 5. getting someone to go to every show and record, stream and upload...if you all can get together enough funds to cover my current wages, benefits, insurance etc. as well as all expenses needed for travel lodging [talk with the band about using the drivers rooms after they leave town at night] and meals ill volunteer to do it....somehow I think I may understand what it takes to go on the road with dso..... all in good fun kids.... enjoy! p
Gratefullyjohn
I agree with you my man ^^ , it's not that hard to stream or tape if you have an iPhone, the quality may not be the best, but atleast it's something. That's why I wouldn't mind streaming for the couch tourers
