I really loved this show. The rendition of Let's Spend the Night Together was driving and hypnotic and veered off nicely for a brief spacy interlude. A great beginning to our night spent together. In the second set, I thought the energy on China Rider was incredible, made even extra special by a great Feelin Groovy Jam transition. And Lisa was just sooo good on "It hurt me too" that it actually hurt me too. Finally in the 3rd set the were just on fire. While I must confess it is not one of my favorites, the version of Slipknot was transcendent. Ditto for Drums. Continuing in the confession department, OMSN not being my favorite closer, I thought I had made it through to Monday and was in the clear. Oh well. But the Muddy Water encore was so sweet all was forgiven. I also have to say that the venue was one of the nicest I have attended in the New York area. All in all a wonderful New Years celebration.

Happy New Year to All!!! What a fun time. I really enjoyed the venue, the staff(except for one young prick) were all really cool. Sound was perfect more or less, even where we were(farthest possible place from stage). I would go back again.

Opening with 'lets spend the night together' was brilliant- A. because, obviously, we were gonna spend a long night together and - B. because I believe it's the first time they've played it. Dupree's, BLow Away, and a very strong Touch stand out as highlights for me in the first set.

The second set was easily my favorite, starting right off with another unplayed tune "til the morning comes", which I thought they played perfectly(though I think to close the night would have really been something...). The china>rider was absolutely smoking, one of the highlights of the nights. Did they do 'feelin groovy'? i think so but can't say for sure. Man's world was another highlight of the night for me because, well, this song is badass. Bird Song was a very chill and sublime version, very nice. As always Lisa crushed 'hurts me too'.

NOw something happened between sets that fucked up my headspace for a minute and somewhat tainted my experience of the third set- the venue put on the TV countdown. WHAT THE FUCK?? this was THE LAMEST thing i've ever experienced at a show. EVER. I don't own a TV and make a point to not even look at them yet I have to be subjected to that shit?? I know it wasn't the band's decision but it sucked. In years past the band has played up until the moment of New Years making it actually exciting. Oh well....I got over it:)

Third set was fun too. Shakedown oddly was the highlight of the set for me. Where's the ballad??? I say you kick OMST night out of there and throw a DEW in, the show was rockin the whole time and would have, IMO, benefited grately from a ballad. Just my 2 cents.

The show from the 30th goes down as being easily my Favorite, no contest whatsoever. Amazing run of shows, can't wait to hopefully hear them again. Thank DSO band, crew, family---You all are my favorite people in the world. After attending 60 shows this year it is my goal to go to LESS next year. My body and wallet need it:)

See y'all in Cali!!

Thanks Gary! Will check it out soon as I get home, since the filters here at work aren't conducive to rocking. Nor to dancing in the office.

Aaron, I know where the wallet situation is at. Bliss ain't cheap. But it is pleasing.

That young security guy was a total prick... the staff were really nice, and put up with alot of our shit, for the most part...

I have to agree that the countdown to NYE was pretty lame.. I couldn't figure out when the ball was being dropped and I could barely make out what they were saying over the radio.. Actually the last few years for New Years was pretty mellow with the whole ringing in of the new year count down thing.. I remember back in the day, there would be balloons, and party favors and it was just a different experience.. Since seeing DSO for the first time in 2000, I've been on 8 New Years Runs. Don't get me wrong, the last few New Years have been AWESOME, it's just been a different experience the last few years. For General Admission being $75, you'd think we would atleast get a glass of champagne.. I tried to get the "free beer" but some asshat did something wrong and the police were all over the place where you were supposed to get your beer, and being in the mind state that I was in, I didn't want to be near that scene, so no free beer for me.

In my opinion, the Philly show was the show of the tour! Total Rock and Roll show it was! Baltimore was alot of fun, and so was the 2 Long Island shows.. I really like the Paramont, it's a beautiful venue. I wish I could of gone down to the Founders Club, but that was way to expensive for me!

All in all, the last week has been outstanding!! I can't thank everyone enough for making my new years, special! First and foremost, I can't thank the band and crew for all that they do! I can go to a show miserable, and depressed, and come out feeling like a million bucks! Who needs a shrink when you can go see DSO? :) Also, the group of people that I have come to know and love with all my heart, you all make me a better person! To EVERYONE I saw and hung out with on this run, thank you so much for being you, and making me feel loved and wanted. It's a good feeling and with out all of you, I don't know where I'd be today.

So, my brain is still in recovery, and will probably take a few days to get back to normal... whatever normal is :)

THANK YOU ALL AGAIN, AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

I LOVE YOU ALL!!!

NYE was a very fun night. Well obviously because it was NYE, but also I thought the Paramount was a cool venue, and for this show I was up in the back with everyone whom I had met over new years run, so it was great to enjoy the show with my new friends, you guys are awesome :)! I also thought the show was great for the rarities that were played: Let's Spend the Night Together, Till the Morning Comes, It's a Man's World, In the Midnight Hour, Unbroken Chain. First set was pretty good and I especially liked the Let's Spend the Night Together and Loose Lucy. The band really turned things up second set, for one I really enjoyed the song choices, and I thought they were playing better than first set. From start to finish I loved it all, and you are correct Mango, they did a Feelin' Groovy jam and it was most excellent. The ball drop TV thing was pretty silly, I was so thrown off when the TV announcer's voice came on over the speaker, I was like "who the fuck is talking right now?" I was legitimately trying to spot out who the hell was talking on stage before I saw the projector screens in the corner had times square on. I lived though. I loved having a Franklin's Tower to start off the New Year, but I thought this version was weaker than a lot of other versions I've heard played by DSO, but I did however think they did a great job on the Help on the Way and Slipknot. The Shakedown and Unbroken Chain I really enjoyed. The Shakedown was very funky. I was talking to these two usher's during the show, they couldn't have been more than 20 years old, and I asked them if they listened to "this kind of music" they said no, but you know what I caught their asses dancing during the Shakedown. I loved every bit of it, good job DSO. I think Mango makes and interesting point, there wasn't really any ballads during the show, whether it could have been a Morning Dew, And It Stoned Me, Standing on the Moon, Simple Twist of Fate, or Positively 4th Street, I think it would've been an excellent addition. Also, I want to note, I swear Rob gets better and better at switching between Pigpen signing and Brent signing; great job Rob!

Overall the new years run was an awesome time. I met some of the coolest people ever and danced my ass of to some very fine music for four days straight. I couldn't be happier! Thank you DSO and thank you to all the great people who I met along the way, you guys gave me some great memories that I shall never forget.

Had a blast both nights - met some very cool folks and loved Hotel DSO. The early 70s version of Bird Song (with the mini drum solo inside) was beyond description! I've always wanted to hear DSO do that, but hadn't had the opportunity until NYE 2012. I was wondering why Lisa's birthday wasn't acknowledged? Last year we all ate cake but this year, not a word. Happy belated birthday Lisa and thanks for all you do!

Guest crazy digits

holy coller roaster....attended Philly thru new years...didnt do rams head because it is usually oversold and cramped to put it mildly....place was configured silly like. all 3 shows were intense to say the least...not sure which one I liked the best...they were all tasty as can be. the family was there in full force minus a couple of real close buds...some of you will read this, some wont , some dont subscribe to board, one lives in far away colorado...woods bound for sure :-(

jeff is a monster :-) It gets better every time. would love to see jeff and jk up there at the same time, why i thought of that right then, who knows..but would! it would be electric and weird at the same time,,,it would also be nice to see jk sit in with the band some day...toss aside all the differences and play...thats what life is all about! We are so lucky to have jeff, its crazy, unbelievable...love randi and her smiling self....lo and behold randi's brother in law's wife ( linda ) is an old friend and married to jeff's brother mack...small tiny world kinda like when scotty larned was dating a gal who was in my ex wife's and my wedding...found that out the night before i was flying to florida for dso tour in 2001 and ultimately how i met the band...love it all...

did i say thanks to the band....because i could never say it enough..oh yeah, and the crew too...maybe especially the crew because without them, the show would never go...never....and all the past crew too...so incredibly lucky we are!! we know it too! THANKS!!!!

So many highlights but the one that really rung my bell was tangled up in blue in philly...that was so GD good as lisa would say ;)

thank you, thank you, thank you!

also a BIG shout out to Gary and Connie...most awesomeness peeps I know....the roses they bought for Lisa's bday was incredibly kind, and thoughtful..happy bday to lisa again! always spends her night with all of us :-)

Anyway, nuff of my rambling...looking forward to JITS...considering doing florida but that might be a bit immature... see you soon and thanks to all of my friends for looking out for me and all of us!

What a special night with special friends, although some very special friends were missing. The holidays seem to be both a period of great joy, but also of some sadness. I find myself making new memories with great people, but I also spend time remembering the old memories with people who for some reason or another are no longer here. Just about every I love you I've ever said I've meant and thus, those people have places etched in my heart forever. For me personally, there is no better place to take this emotional roller coaster ride then at a DSO show.

I can not thank the band and the crew enough. The Dark Star Orchestra changed my life and all those who work so hard to make sure that the show goes on are invaluable people in my life. Crew past and present. Musicians past and present. They all deserve a special thanks for all they do for us. It's a little belated, but happy new year to band and crew. Thanks for helping to create lifelong memories I will cherish forever.

With a DSO new years, you come in with the expectation that your going to be blown away. High expectations can be rough, but DSO always delivers. Opening the night with Let's spend the Night Together was, as others have said, a great way to open the night. At the time, I knew it was a DSO rarity and as it turns out, it was a DSO first. We get to do the Cowboy dance through Mexicali and then into Cumberland. This songs touches me simply through the title Cumberland Blues. My Cumberland Blues were different than those expressed in the song. I never took no shift at no mine, but I have had the Cumberland blues. One of the worse nights of my life. I love Dupree Diamond Blues. I always find it to be a real treat in any GD setlist and the same goes for when DSO plays it. I just love the story and for some, that story is oh so true. What a man will do for a lady can be damn right absurd or incredible at times, but that jelly is so good. I feel like the Blow Away, Black Throated Wind, Loose Lucy sequence was great on a night like this. All part of the roller coaster of a love lost. So many different emotions contained in those songs. It is really hard to describe, but on a night like tonight, where lingering sadness isn't really an option, the final message in Loose Lucy seems to be most important. Thank you for a real good time. Touch closed the set.

Set two opens with another DSO first, Till the Morning Comes. I was surprised this was a first. I was aware DSO and JK never performed it but I would've figured it would have popped up with Jeff in the lead by now. You certainly couldn't tell it was a first. DSO's first rendition was phenomenal. I'm glad I got to be apart of it. China > Rider is always a great ride. The playful nonsense of the first song. It's like a cat chasing a ball of yarn to a very powerful traditional song. I find I know you rider with the right players and under the right circumstances to be one of the most powerful and moving pieces of music the GD ever performed and to evolve out of playful nonsense. "Gonna miss me when I'm gone." It's a man world and In the Midnight Hr and just good ol GD fun. I love dancing to In the Midnight Hour. Then the always moving Bird Song. Song written for Janus, but about so many different people for so many individuals. I've learned that part of getting older is the fact that many who touch you will leave this world before you. It hurts even now to think about it. Maybe one day we will all be reunited. "Anyone who sings a tune so sweet is passing by." "Sleep in the stars." After getting a Bobby good lovin in Philly, DSO breaks out a Pigpen good lovin for New Years. I love Pigpen good lovin's. I think my favorite line in one of his raps is a want to show you how I drive and feel. Set ends a little somber with a always moving Hurts me too from Lisa. She just blows my mind away with how powerful her delivery is on songs like this. Tonight was no different. She sings with such power and emotion you simply could not fake. The song clearly means something to her. DSO closes the set with a romping and very danceable Going Down the Road.

I thought the final set of the night was just about perfect. I love Jerry Ballads, but I was quite all right with no ballad here in the final set of the night. I'm glad we ended the roller coaster in more upbeat tone. We already got to experience the sorrow of a black throated wind, Bird Song, etc. and now, it was time to bring in the new year with a big dance party. DSO got us rolling with an out of this world segment of music. Franklins > help > slip > stranger was just fantastic fun. Very danceable, very moving and the stranger is always playful. On any given night, several beautiful angels may have graced your presence and even if it is forbidden, it always fun to play along with the thought until the song closes. Unbroken > drums > space > unbroken was very moving stuff too. Not a huge drums > space fan, but I love the auld lang syne that the drummers through in to the drums. I remember singing that song in elementary school in music class. I find unbroken chain to be a very moving piece of music. I can attest from the winds from last night that "out on the mountain it will drive you insane listening to the winds howl." Shakedown street a great way to keep the party going and to dance in the new year. I'm so thankful that so many people were hanging up in the balcony by then. Just a great group of friends. I can not thank you guys enough for being apart of my life. I feel blessed. OMSN closes the set. Yes, it is a little disappointing for some, myself included. Not my favorite tune, but after so much moving music, one more dance/party number doesn't hurt. The band encores with a very moving piece of music that for me echoes many of the sentiments contained in the night. "Sing a song of my own."

New Years after events are kind of like Vegas. Better left as New Years after events, but some funny funny stuff for sure transpired. I am sure I will see many of you next year. Peace be to all and to all a good night.
